Background: Indonesia medical education recruitment system recruits students directly from high school who had been influenced by mostly teacher centered learning. As part of pedagogical approach in higher education, those students will be obligatory to learn independently and effectively. Self-directed learning (SDL) is an important aspect in latest medical educational evidence which would determine students’ successfulness in learning. Self-directed learning readiness (SDLRS) is influenced by several factors including motivation, age, culture, and previous education experience. Today, the admission process in Indonesia is based on knowledge-test based only. This study aims to reveal correlation between several factors which influence students’ Self Directed Learning Readiness (SDLRS).Methods: This study used SDLRS questionnaire as a valid and reliable toll to measure the students’ self directed learning readiness and correlate with those several factors.Result: From 540 distributed questionnaires, 412 questionnaires returned back. The Spearman correlation showed significant ratio between students SDLRS score and students’ motivation. While, the analysis on age showed that age of 20 has significant ratio with students’ SDLRS score. Conclusion: among age, previous education experience, and culture; students’ internal motivation  should be considered as important factor for students’ SDLRS which will determine their successfulness in learning in medical education. These factors should be regarded as one requirement of students’ admission in medical education.

Self-directed learning (SDL) is an essential element in medical education to foster lifelong learning. Self-directed learning readiness is the extent to which an individual has the attitude, ability, skill and personality characteristics essential for SDL. This study aimed to analyze self-directed learning readiness among physiotherapy students. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 288 undergraduate physiotherapy students using Self-Rating Scale of Self-Directed Learning (SRSSDL) to assess self-directed learning readiness. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software version 21. Statistical significance was set at P<0.05. A total 288 participants, 143(49.65%) were in preclinical phase and 145 (50.35%) in clinical phase. Out of 288 physiotherapy students, 60.76% students had moderate level, followed by 37.5% with high level and 1.74% with low level of SDL readiness. The total SRSSDL score was higher in clinical students as compared to preclinical students using independent t test (p=0.000). Also, subscale scores of SRSSDL, awareness (p=0.000), learning strategies (p=0.000), learning activities (p=0.000), evaluation (p=0.000) and interpersonal skills (p=0.04) were higher in clinical students as compared to preclinical students using independent t test. The study showed that physiotherapy students had moderate level of SDL readiness. The SDL readiness was found to be higher in clinical students as compared to preclinical. It will assist the medical educators to incorporate more active learning strategies to enhance SDL skills and help in curriculum development. Keywords: Self-directed learning, physical therapists, medical education, students.

AbstractThis study was aimed at analyzing the influence factors of student characteristics, the internal factors, and external factors of self-directed learning readiness (SDLR) and student academic achievement as well as the influence factors of SDLR on student academic achievement. This study was conducted by using a survey design on 111 students of the fourth year of Tadulako University Medical Undergraduate Program by using questionnaires to measure internal factors, external factors, and SDLR. The students’ cumulative grade point (GPA) was used to indicate academic achievement. The data were analyzed quantitatively using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) analysis tools with alternative variance or component based SEM method called Partial Least Square (PLS). The results show that the characteristics of the students and the internal factors significantly affect the SDLR and the students’ academic achievement, while the external factors have no effect on the SDLR and the students’ academic achievement. The factors that have a higher effect on SDLR and student achievement are internal factors. The results also show that SDLR does not affect the students’ academic achievement.

The anxiety level can be infl uence learning achievement. While the self directed learning readiness can be infl uence learning achievement. The purpose of this study was to determine wheter self directed learning readiness have relationship with the anxiety level at the fi rst medical education student of University Muhammadiyah Surakarta. This study involve 49 responden that receive kuisioner about self directed learning readiness and kuisioner of Hamilton Anxiety Scale. With Spearman test, , the result of this study show that Sig value of the psyche anxiety is 0.550, physics anxiety 0.260 and general anxiety 0.079. This value indicate that there are not signifi cant relationship between self directed learning readiness and the anxiety level. Based on study result, we concluded that self directed learning readiness didn’t have signifi cant relation with the anxiety level at the fi rst medical education student of University Muhammadiyah Surakarta. Keywords: self directed learning readiness, the anxiety level.

Abstract ‘Flipped learning’ has become increasingly popular in medical education as a means of developing independent learning skills in students. The article by Zheng at al. (2020) highlights the potential utility of this approach in disaster triage training. However, the article also highlights to us some concerns regarding how ‘flipped learning’ may favour certain learners over others in the provision of disaster triage education. Specifically, the article demonstrates the necessity for increased pre-classroom preparation when a ‘flipped classroom’ model is employed which inevitably privileges those with a higher ability to engage with self-directed learning. Whilst such a skill is important to develop in medical education, we fear it may lead to polarised student attainment rather than ensuring a maximum number of students achieve the requisite standard required. More research is consequently needed to inform the most efficacious means of facilitating disaster triage training that supports all students sufficiently whilst also helping to nurture their independent learning skills.
