Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) was cultured with an aquatic plant, water hyacinth/eceng gondok  (Eichornia crassipes), kangkung air (Ipomea aquatica) or kapu-kapu (Pistia stratiotes) in concrete ponds, for 3 months. Catfish cultured without aquatic plant was used as a control. The experiment was carried out to evaluate the survival rate as well as the growth of fish and aquatic plants.The survival rates of catfish cultured with I. aquatica, E. crassipes, and P. stratiotes were 76, 87, and 98%, respectively. In addition the survival rate of catfish cultured without any aquatic plant was 93%. The weight gain of catfish was 14,1-16,2 kg per pond. Whereas, the total weight gains of aquatic plant were 37,0,  27,7 and 7,7 kg per pond for E. crassipes, P. stratiotes, and I. aquatica,. Respectively. Dissolved oxygen, and the concentrations of NH3, NH4+ and PO43- in water with aquatic plants were higher than that of in water without aquatic plant. However, the concentration of CO2 was higher in water with aquatic plant.

Catfish (Clarias gariepinus.) is one of the leading commodities that are widely cultivated in Indonesia. The current development of the aquaculture industry, which leads to intensive cultivation systems with an increase in stocking and high amount of feed, causes an increase in organic waste that can reduce water quality. Phytoremediation is one way to stabilize pollutants, both organic and inorganic compounds, through aquatic plants. Water hyacinth (Eichornia crassipess) is one aquatic plant that can reduce total nitrogen up to 73.05%. This study aims to analyze the effect of water hyacinth (E. crassipess) as a phytoremediator on TAN reduction, survival rates, and growth of catfish (C. gariepinus) seeds. This study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) method with four treatments and four replications, namely P1 / control (without water hyacinth), P2 (without replacement of water hyacinth), P3 (alternation of water hyacinth every 21 days), and P4 (alternation of water hyacinth) every 14 days). The results showed that the P4 treatment (alternation of water hyacinth every 14 days) gave the lowest TAN content 0.01 mg / L and provided the highest survival rate of 89.88%, as well as the absolute weight and length growth of the most catfish seeds height, i.e., 9.80 g, and 5.50 cm, respectively.

The objectives of the study are to determine the effect of both type and dosage of aquatic plants bokashi on the growth and yield of red onion in alluvial soil. The research design used was Factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of two factors, namely type and the dose of aquatic plants bokashi. The first factor consisted of three types of bokashi, i.e., giant Salvinia (Salvinia molesta), water cabbage (Pistia stratiotes) and water hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes), respectively. The second factor were four levels of bokashi dosage which were 0 tons ha-1, 10 tons ha-1 (0.2 kg/polybag), 20 tons ha-1 (0.5 kg/polybag) and 30 tons ha-1 (0.8 kg/polybag). The study was conducted from March to May 2017, located in the greenhouse of the Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Palangka Raya. The results showed that there was no interaction between the type and dose of bokashi on all variables observed. The dosage of bokashi affected plant height, leaf number, fresh weight and dry weight of biomass per clump, dry weight of bulbs and tuber diameter, but did not significantly affect the number of bulbs. The bokashi type did not significantly affect all observed variables. However, the water hyacinth bokashi tended to be better than other treatments

The effluent from activated sludge treatment of petroleum wastewater was treated with the aid of a ponding system using aquatic plants (Water Hyacinth, Chlorella, Reed). A good result was obtained in this study. Pilot pond system shows that the purification efficiency depends on the residence time of about 14 days. The petroleum removal waa 97-98 %, the COD removal was from 88-93 %. The dissolved oxygen amount (with Chlorella) increased from 0.7 mg/l to 9.8 mg/l and the pH increased from 6.9 to 8-8.6. The application of 3 step biological pond with the use of Water Hyacinth, Chlorella, Reeds for post treatment of petroleum wastewater is appropriate in Vietnam.

The aquatic plant Pistia stratiotes L. is environmentally hazardous and requires effective methods for its utilization. The harmfulness of these plants is determined by their excessive growth in water bodies and degradation of local aquatic ecosystems. Mechanical removal of these plants is widespread but requires fairly resource-intensive technology. However, these aquatic plants are polymer-containing substrates and have a great potential for conversion into bioenergy. The aim of the work was to determine the main patterns of Pistia stratiotes L. degradation via granular microbial preparation (GMP) to obtain biomethane gas while simultaneously detoxifying toxic copper compounds. The composition of the gas phase was determined via gas chromatography. The pH and redox potential parameters were determined potentiometrically, and Cu(II) concentration photocolorimetrically. Applying the preparation, high efficiency of biomethane fermentation of aquatic plants and Cu(II) detoxification were achieved. Biomethane yield reached 68.0 ± 11.1 L/kg VS of Pistia stratiotes L. biomass. The plants’ weight was decreased by 9 times. The Cu(II) was completely removed after 3 and 10 days of fermentation from initial concentrations of 100 ppm and 200 ppm, respectively. The result confirms the possibility of using the GMP to obtain biomethane from environmentally hazardous substrates and detoxify copper-contaminated fluids.

A study was conducted to determine the efficacy of three most commonly used growth promoters from different pharmaceutical companies on growth performance of hybrid walking catfish (Clarias batrachus × Clarias gariepinus). The experiment was done in the wet laboratory of the Department of Aquaculture, BAU, Mymensingh, with a total of 10 aquaria and 160 fish having mean initial weight of 6.3 ± 0.48 g. The three growth promoters, “Charger gel” from Fishtech (BD) Ltd., “Growth gel” from Advance Agrotech (BD) Ltd. and “Hepaprotect-aqua” from Renata Animal health Ltd., were used in separate nine (9) aquaria at recommended, lower dose and higher dose respectively. One aquarium was used as control (diet without any growth promoter). The fish were fed with paragon nursery floating feed at 20% of body weight in each aquarium for 28 days. Doses of Charger gel were given as 80, 60 and 100 mg/20 g feed/day, that of Growth gel, 0.14, 0.12 and 0.16 ml/20 g feed/day and of Hepaprotect-aqua, 30, 15 and 50 mg/20 g feed/day. Re-circulatory system was used throughout the experimental period. By applying recommended, lower and higher dose of “Charger gel”, mean final weights were found as 23.0, 21.9 and 35.9 g; average daily weight gain as 0.60, 0.56 and 1.06 g and specific growth rate (SGR) as 2.01, 1.93 and 2.70% respectively. For “Growth gel”, mean final weights were found as 22.8, 17.3 and 31.1 g; average daily weight gain as 0.59, 0.39 and 0.88 g and SGR as 1.99, 1.57 and 2.48 % respectively. For “Hepaprotect-aqua”, mean final weights were found as 24.2, 17.5 and 28.2 g; average daily weight gain as 0.64, 0.40 and 0.78 g and SGR as 2.09, 1.58 and 2.32% respectively. In all the cases survival rates were 100%. All the three growth promoters showed better results at their higher doses in comparison to their results in lower and recommended doses. However, in average Charger gel showed the best result than the other two growth promoters. This information on the efficacy study of growth promoters needs to be disseminated to the farmers for improved fish production.Asian J. Med. Biol. Res. March 2017, 3(1): 103-108

The aim of this research is to identify and to inventory water plants in Hanjalutung Lake,Petuk Ketimpun Village, Jekan Raya District, Palangka Raya City. This research was conducted from December 2017 to January 2018. Sampling was carried out in 3 (three) stations, namely inlet ,middle and outlet. The tool used for aquatic plants 2 x 2 m transect.The results of research aquatic plants found in the waters of Lake Hanjalutung 7 (seven) types namely Kiambang (Salvinia molesta), gerigit/bite (Leersia hexandra), Cat Tail Grass (Utricularia aurea), Para Grass (Cyperus platystylis), Water Hyacinth ( Eichhornia crassipes ), Kiapu (Pistia stratiotes) dan Ketanan (Polygonum sp).

Four aquatic plants were tested for the occurrence of unusual polyamines by high performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography. The whole plants ubiquitously contained norspermidine, homospermidine, norspermine, and thermospermine in addition to usual polyamines such as diaminopropane, putrescine, spermidine, and spermine. Pistia stratiotes L. and Potamogeton distinctus A. Bennett contained aminopropylhomospermidine. Caldopentamine was detected in the former plant. Homospermine was found in Ranuculus aquatilis L. Two tertiary branched tetraamines, N4-aminopropylnorspermidine and N4-aminopropylspermidine, were detected in Potamogeton distinctus and Sagittaria trifolia L.Key words: aquatic plant, polyamine, tertiary branched tetraamine.

The quality of the aquatic environment was strongly influenced by the development of urbanization, industrialization and population growth, and therefore water pollution, mainly due to the presence of heavy metal, becoming a widespread concern. The objective of this work was to evaluate the possibility to remove heavy metals Cd, Zn, Cr and Ni from wastewater using two aquatic plants, water hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes) and water lettuce (Pistia stratiottes). These plants possess excellent abilities to metabolize and bioaccumulate heavy metals from various polluted aquatic environments. For a period of 30 days, the content of heavy metals from wastewater and aquatic plants samples was monitored weakly and the efficacy of these plants to remove heavy metals was quantified. Heavy metals were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry with graphite furnace (GFAAS). The obtained results have shown the efficacy of Eichornia crassipes and Pistia stratiottes to remove metals from the studied wastewater. The bioaccumulation rate of heavy metals in plants was effective until day 24 of the period of 30 days of the experiment, as the plants become inefficient beyond this period. The uptake of heavy metals in the studied aquatic plants depends on the concentration of each heavy metal present in the used wastewater and the exposure time.

Background: The major problem facing fish feed manufacturers and fish nutrition is the increasing competition for the same feeding stuff between man and the fish feed industry due to their conventional status. This has brought about the high price and scarcity of such feedstuffs. This research is aimed at evaluating the potentials of using graded levels of grasshopper as protein sources in the diet of African catfish. Methods: Four feeding trial were set up with percentage inclusions of the grasshopper meal of 0% [diet] 1, 5% [Diet II], 10% [Diet III] and 15% [Diet IV]. The feed was given to the fish for 8 weeks. Fish survival rates, weekly weight gain, and length gain were recorded. Results: The results revealed that the. The survival rate of fish was over 90% for all experimental diets and it was significantly improved in the fish fed on 10% & 5% of grasshoppers (95.97% & 97.5%, respectively) when compared with the control group (91.04%). Percentage weight gain of the control group was significantly lower (803.00 %) compared to fish fed on 5% of grasshoppers (1092.00%). The highest fish length gain was also recorded fish fed on 5% of grasshopper (8.65 cm) while the least length gains (5.43 cm) was recorded for the control group in relation to all other fish groups which have received grasshopper at all inclusion levels. Conclusion: It is concluded that grasshopper inclusion in diet has the potential to enhance the survival rate and modulate growth parameters in Clarias gariepinus. Therefore, Grasshopper can be used as a feed additive in aquaculture to improve fish growth and production.
