African catfish (Clarias sp.) is one of important freshwater fish which prefer consumed by people due to many advantages. Aeromonas sp. bacteria are dangerous patogen for freshwater fishes. This objective of the research was to isolate, identify and determine pathogenicity of Aeromonas sp. bacteria from African catfish from District Ngawi. The samples of catfish with 20 - 25 cm length showing clinical signs disease were obtained from three sub districts. Bacteria were isolated from kidney and inoculated into GSP medium. Characterization and identification through morphology of bacterial colonies, cells and biochemical test. Postulate Koch was conducted to verify abaility to couse disease. Pathogenicity was analyzed by determination of value of Lethal Dosage-50 on catfish on 7 - 9 cm length. The result showed that the disease symptoms of fish infected by the bacteria were skin ulcer, abdominal swelling and kidney damage. Fifteen bacterial isolates were collected which five, six and four isolates were from Kecamatan Karang Jati, Geneng dan Paron.sub-district respectively. The result showed 12 isolates (GKJ1, GKJ3, GKJ4, GGN1, GGN2, GGN3, GGN4, GGN5, GGN6, GPR2, GPR3 and GPR4) were identified as Aeromonas hydrophila. Three isolates (GKJ2, GKJ5 and GPR1) were identified as A. salmonicida. Isolate of A. hydrophila GKJ1, GKJ4, GGN2, GGN5, GPR2 and GPR4 were virulent to African catfish with LD50 values of 1,55 x 105, 3,89 x 105, 7,24 x 105, 2,39 x 105, 6,61 x 104 and 1,95 x 104 cfu/fish.

Aeromonas hydrophila is an opportunistic microorganism. It is a secondary biological agent that contributes to the occurrence of fish diseases and its deterioration. This research was undertaken to determine the prevalence of A. hydrophila in some freshwater fishes collected from three different fish markets of Dhaka City and to test their antibiotic susceptibility. Total bacterial count and total aeromonas on different aeromonas selective media were enumerated using serial dilution technique. Bacterial isolates were characterized to identify A. hydrophila using biochemical tests and with comparison to reference strain (ATCC 7966). The lowest Aeromonas count was detected to be 2.83±0.40×102 cfu/g in Anabas testudineus and the highest was 1.03±0.153×103 cfu/g in Oreochromis mossambicus. On market basis highest aeromonas count was found in Anando Bazar (8.10±1.09×102 cfu/g) and lowest in Hatirpool Bazar (5.63±0.90×102 cfu/g) with no significant difference. Maximum susceptibility to amikacin and gentamicin was observed whereas all of the isolates were found resistant to a commonly used antibiotic amoxycillin. The obtained results point that antimicrobial susceptibility was more or less similar regardless of the origin of the samples collected. All the fishes investigated in this study contained A. hydrophila in their different organs.

In northern Vietnam, a disease called ‘red spot disease’ has been causing high morbidity and mortality in populations of farmed grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella for about 2 decades. The name ‘red spot disease’ refers to a condition characterised by haemorrhagic lesions, reddening and ulceration of the skin. Eight different bacterial isolates, namely Aeromonas hydrophila, A. sobria, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Vibrio alginolyticus, Pseudomonas fluorescens, P. luteola, Citrobacter freundii and P. putida, were isolated from diseased grass carp and used for experimental infection of the same species. Fish were challenged with the different bacterial isolates both by immersion and intramuscular injection. Different concentrations of bacteria were tested to evaluate their pathogenicity. Injection with 1 × 105 CFU of A. hydrophila and A. sobria resulted in clinical signs identical to those of red spot-diseased grass carp in Vietnam. None of the other bacterial isolates tested caused any morbidity or mortality in fish challenged either intramuscularly (1 × 106 CFU) or by bath immersion (1 × 106 or 1 × 108 CFU ml-1).

The experiment with the aim to know the amount of vitamin C added to commercial diet that could improved a maximum resistance of African catfish against Aeromonas hydrophila infection has been conducted. The treatments were (A) commercial diet without vitamin C as a control, (B) commercial diet with 250 mg/kg vitamin C, (C) 500 mg/kg, (D) 750 mg/kg, and (E) 1,000 mg/kg. The diet was given for 62 days, and at the 56th day the fish was challenged against A. hydrophila infection through intra muscular injection at the dose of 0.1 mL of 1.0 x 106 cfu bacterial suspensions. Specific antibody titer, clinical signs, survival rate, and vitamin C level on the liver of the fish were observed. The results indicated that addition of vitamin C to the diet was effective to increase the resistance of African catfish against A. hydrophila infection. Survival rates of fish test at the end of the experiment were 68%, 78%, 92%, 96%, and92% for the group of A, B, C, D, and E respectively. Based on regression analysis, the optimum amount of vitamin C add

Probiotic products are viewed as an alternative to the use of antibiotics in freshwater fishes farming. Probiotic organisms include bacteria, yeast, and filamentous fungi offering different benefits to fish including growth promotion, inhibition of pathogen colonisation, and improvement of nutrient digestion, water quality, and stress tolerance, as well as enhancement of reproduction. For these reasons, this review aims to identify the main trends in probiotic amendment in freshwater fishes. Strategies to incorporate the probiotic strains in the fish feed or pellets to allow optimal viability of the strains as they reach the fish gastrointestinal tract (GIT) are crucial in probiotic research and commercial applications for freshwater fish.

Objectives Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a primary disorder of the myocardium, is the most common cardiac disease in cats. However, determination of myocardial deformation with two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography in cats with various stages of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy has not yet been reported. This study was designed to measure quantitatively multidirectional myocardial deformations of cats with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Methods Thirty-two client-owned cats with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and 14 healthy cats serving as controls were enrolled and underwent assessment of myocardial deformation (peak systolic strain and strain rate) in the longitudinal, radial and circumferential directions. Results Longitudinal and radial deformations were reduced in cats with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, despite normal systolic function determined by conventional echocardiography. Cats with severely symptomatic hypertrophic cardiomyopathy also had lower peak systolic circumferential strain, in addition to longitudinal and radial strain. Conclusions and relevance Longitudinal and radial deformation may be helpful in the diagnosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Additionally, the lower circumferential deformation in cats with severe hypertrophic cardiomyopathy may contribute to clinical findings of decompensation, and seems to be related to severe cardiac clinical signs. Indices of multidirectional myocardial deformations by two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography may be useful markers and help to distinguish between cats with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and healthy cats. Additionally, they may provide more detailed assessment of contractile function in cats with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
