This paper was aimed at providing the pollution status of Jabi Lake, FCT Abuja. 13 parameters were tested from raw water collected four sampling points. The physicochemical parameters were measured using Hanna multiparametric meter, while transparency was measured using Secchi disc. Dissolved oxygen, Biological and Chemical oxygen demand were measured titrimetrically using standard method. The concentrations of the metals were determined in triplicates. Flame atomic absorption spectrometer was used in the analysis as well as descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation) and standard error. The Nigerian Industrial Standard and WHO guidelines for domestic water were used to compare the results of the water from the lake. The study reveals that the mean turbidity ranged between 21.6 – 24.2cm and is above the recommended limits of both WHO and NIS. The range of pH was between 6.3 and 8.8. pH is within a neutral range. The study reveals that the mean value of TDS and electrical conductivity is below the recommended limit of both WHO and NIS guidelines. The study shows that there is high concentration of some heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, Mn, Zn, and Fe) in Jabi Lake. Cd, Zn, Fe and Ni are above the permissible limits of the NIS and WHO guidelines, which is an indication of pollution. The study, therefore, recommends that proactive measures be taken on environmental laws in FCT and that environmental/health worker and non-governmental bodies be active in enlightenment campaigns that will alert members of the public to the harm being caused to this important ecosystem.

We have found a dog family in which there were five cases of increased red cell glutathione corresponding to four to five times the normal concentration without any clinical signs. In the present study, we mainly examined the concentrations of free amino acids in the erythrocytes, plasma, and urine of two of the dogs, and we demonstrated that the concentrations of glutamate, aspartate, and glutamine in their erythrocytes increases to 92, 63, and 13 times the mean value in the normal blood, respectively. There were no changes observed in the other amino acids as compared to normal, although the glycine and histidine in the erythrocyte showed slight increases. The concentrations of amino acids in the plasma and urine of the dogs were almost equal to normal ones. The activities of some of the enzymes involved in the glutathione metabolism in the erythrocytes from the two dogs were all within the normal range. The increased level of glutathione could be explained by the fact that the feedback inhibition of gamma-glutamyl cysteine synthetase by glutathione was released by the high levels of glutamate in the erythrocytes.

Between January 1987 and January 1988 the primary productivity and related parameters were studied in the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta. The Ciénaga is a coastal lagoon with an area of 423 km'2 and mean depth of 1.6 m, which is located at the Caribbean coast of Colombia. The salinity fluctuates seasonally within a wide range. The system is characterized by a high concentration of seston and a great primary productivity. The concentration of chlorophyll " a " ranged from 5.6to 181 ug Ii , the mean value was 59 ug I i . The concentration of proteins was within the extremes of 0.9 and 9.5 mg I"i f the mean value was 4.2 mg I ] . The gross primary productivity in the central part of the Ciénaga amounted to 1690 g C m*2 per year. Considering the temporal fluctuation in the whole system the lowest and highest values were 1.40 and 16.3 g C rrr2 per day. Highest productivity values were encountered when the salinity was low. The primary productivity is controlled by water turbidity and availability of nutrients, thus, seasonal continental waters. The photosynthetic laver ¡s restricted to less than 1.5 m due to the high particle concentration. The mean N: P relation was 4:1 which indicates that the nitrogen compounds are the limiting nutrientes. The high primary productivity sustains an important local fishery. The coastal area in the vicinity of the Ciénaga Grande is benefitted by the export of particulated and dissolved organic matter produced in excess within the coastal lagoon.

The study was conducted to investigate the physicochemical and biological parameters of fish culture and reconstructed pond at Jahangirnagar university campus. The physicochemical parameters of water in culture and reconstructed pond were analyzed during February to September, 2014 and the mean value of temperature were 30.21±0.89 ºC and 29.96±0.91 ºC, pH value were 7.20±0.29 and 6.97±0.39, Dissolve Oxygen (DO) value were 6.44±0.40mg-1 and 6.22±0.30mg-1, Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5) value were 1.02±0.32mg-1 and 0.78±0.18mg-1, Total Dissolve Solid (TDS) were 0.69±0.04mg-1 and 0.64±0.04mg-1, Electric Conductivity (EC) value were 215.38±21.27?Scm-1 and 128.58±1.10?Scm-1. From the study of biological parameter, it was found that Chlorophyceae and Euglenophyceae were dominant in studied ponds and the abundance of phytoplankton are in the order of Chlorophyceae >Euglenophyceae > Bacillariophyceae > Cyanophyceae. The study was conducted to investigate the physicochemical properties of the Old Brahmaputra River and Sewage water in Mymensingh Municipality. To perform the study fifty samples were collected from five different stations from the river and surrounding sewage discharge points. The samples were analyzed to determine pH, Electrical Conductivity (EC), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Lead (Pb) and Cadmium (Cd). The mean value of pH was 7.1 and 6.8 for river and sewage water samples, respectively. Mean EC value was 183 μS/cm and 589.18 μS/cm for river and sewage samples, respectively signifies that EC of all samples were within the acceptable range. 66.32 ppm and 260.36 ppm were the mean TDS value for river and sewage samples, respectively indicates no harm to aquatic lives and irrigation water use. Mean DO and BOD values for river water samples were 4.21 mg/L and 6.02 mg/L, respectively. 3.08 mg/L and 9.98 mg/L were the mean DO and BOD values for sewage water samples, respectively implies that river water is usable for irrigation but sewage water is unfit for it. In this study it was evaluated the start-up procedures of anaerobic treatment system with three horizontal anaerobic reactors (R1, R2 and R3), installed in series, with volume of 1.2 L each. R1 had sludge blanket, and R2 and R3 had half supporter of bamboo and coconut fiber, respectively. As an affluent, it was synthesized wastewater from mechanical pulping of the coffee fruit by wet method, with a mean value of total chemical oxygen demand (CODtotal) of 16,003 mg L-1. The hydraulic retention time (HRT) in each reactor was 30 h. The volumetric organic loading (VOL) applied in R1 varied from 8.9 to 25.0 g of CODtotal (L d)-1. The mean removal efficiencies of CODtotal varied from 43 to 97% in the treatment system (R1+R2+R3), stabilizing above 80% after 30 days of operation. The mean content of methane in the biogas were of 70 to 76%, the mean volumetric production was 1.7 L CH4 (L reactor d)-1 in the system, and the higher conversions were around at 0.20 L CH4 (g CODremoved)-1 in R1 and R2. The mean values of pH in the effluents ranged from 6.8 to 8.3 and the mean values of total volatile acids remained below 200 mg L-1 in the effluent of R3. The concentrations of total phenols of the affluent ranged from 45 to 278 mg L-1, and the mean removal efficiency was of 52%. The start-up of the anaerobic treatment system occurred after 30 days of operation as a result of inoculation with anaerobic sludge with active microbiota.

A pilot scale biochemical treatment system containing three isolated biological aerated filters, one oil-separation pool and one secondary sedimentation tank was set up and used for high concentration organic waste water treatment. Effect of different operating conditions on Chemical Oxygen Demand (CODCr), sulphides, hydroxybenzene and oil degradation was investigated. And the ways of sulphides removal were also explored. While CODCr, the concentrations of sulphides, hydroxybenzene and oil in the waste water are no more than 1500 mg/L, 800 mg/L, 15 mg/L and 150mg/L, respectively, the system can run stably and the total removal of these pollutants is 88.8%, 98.8%, 96.8% and 91.0% accordingly though hydraulic retention time (HRT) varies from 7.95 hr to 15.90 hr and the air/water volume ratio (AWVR) varies from 12 to 8. Most of the sulphides are removed by Biodegradation with Isolated Biological Aerated Filters. Most of the pollutants are removed in the 1st BAF and about 96.5% by mean value of sulphides transforme into elemental sulfur and only about 2.7% by mean value of sulphides transforme into sulphates.

Abstract Although the total reuse rate of municipal wastewater was 8.8% in China in 2012, water crisis is forcing China to increasingly develop water reuse. Urban reuse is comparatively poor and has significant potential to be promoted in China. It is a sensitive matter whether to include kitchen wastewater in grey-water reuse in water-deficient areas when kitchen wastewater accounts for a large proportion of total domestic water consumption. Concentrations of chemical oxygen demand, BOD5 (biochemical oxygen demand), and total organic carbon in kitchen wastewater are comparatively lower in China than in other countries, but a high concentration of nitrogen from washing tableware and rice makes it difficult to meet nitrogen requirements in Chinese guidelines. Whether kitchen wastewater should be included in grey-water reuse in China needs further study. Aerobic biological processes combined with physical filtration and/or disinfection is preferred in grey-water treatment, and how to balance the investment and treatment costs with reuse criteria still needs to be researched further. The promotion of reclaimed water for toilet flushing faces resistance in China. The necessity and effectiveness of existing restrictions in water reuse guidelines for toilet flushing in China are in doubt and need further discussion.

Context: Physico-chemical factors directly affect the water quality. Biological parameters varied from pond to pond according to the water quality. Objective: To assess the physico-chemical conditions and plankton abundance in the studied ponds. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out for a period of seven months from June, 2008 to December, 2008 in six ponds of Rajshahi Metropolitan area. Surface water samples were collected once a month at 10-11 am in black plastic bottle and analyzed for the estimation of different parameters. Water temperature, transparency, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), free carbon dioxide (CO2), biological oxygen demand (BOD), nitrite nitrogen (NO2––N), nitrite (NO2), toxic ammonia, ammonium ion (NH4+) and total hardness were measured. The density of plankton was also estimated. Results: The mean values of water temperature varied from 28.73 ± 3.98 (Pond 6) to 29.56 ± 4.68°C (Pond 4) and the pH varied from 7.37 ± 0.26 (Pond 6) to 8.57±0.26 (Pond 4). The DO varied 1.66 ± 1.03 (Pond 1) to 4.68 ± 0.36 mg/l (Pond 6) and the mean value of free CO2 varied from 4.29 ± 0.37 (Pond 5) to 50.91 ±19.30 mg/l (Pond 3). The total hardness was 136.79 ± 20.28 (Pond 6) to 183.14 ± 51.17 mg/l (Pond 3) with NO2–varied from 0.003 ± 0.002 (Pond 5) to 2.08 ± 0.59 mg/l (Pond 4). The mean total phytoplankton was 28761.43 ± 2912.62 (Pond 2) to 63629.29 ± 20214.44 cells/l (Pond 4) and the mean total zooplankton was 13314.24 ± 3189.70 cells/l (Pond 5) to 18820.00 ± 932.51 cells/l (Pond 4). Conclusion: The deterioration in the physico-chemical quality and plankton population observed in this study is alarming, and periodic monitoring and preventative measures are required to save the aquatic system from eutrophication. The investigation of the degree of trace heavy metals contamination in groundwater wells in Onitsha Southeast Nigeria, was carried out based on 20 preselected sample locations. The result of the analysis revealed water of relatively high acidity with pH ranging from 4.93 t0 6.94. The EC values for the analysed water samples ranged from 10.80 to 60.90u while TDS ranges from 20.00 to 410.00.Heavy metals in the form of Arsenic (As), Cadmium (Cd), Chromium (Cr), Iron (Fe), Nickel (Ni), Zinc (Zn), Vanadium (V) and Copper (Cu) were analyzed for their concentration in the water samples of the area. The study revealed that the mean value of Fe (0.832000 ± 1.0626228ppm) and Cd (0.043750 ± 0.0181713ppm) exceeded the permissible limit for NSDWQ water quality standard as indicated by the high concentrations of Fe and Cd values observed in water samples of the study area. The concentrations of the heavy metals except Fe and Cd range from Ni (0.000 – 0.750),(Cu 0.00 - 0.105), (Zn 0.00 – 1.798), (Cr 0.002 – 0.046), (As 0.000 – 0.056) and (Va 0.000 - 0.008). The spatial distribution of the heavy metals in the area shows that the eastern part of the study area has relative high concentration of the heavy metals which is attributed to anthropogenic impacts.
