Background: Involuntary dehydration can lead to body function of disturbances. Orthostatic measurements were performed to determine the involuntary dehydration caused by orthostatic hypotension. Dehydration is also influenced by the high level of activity and ambient temperature without sufficient fluid intake. Students are prone to dehydration due to their activity, they have to be well hydrated to achieve their academic and nonacademic performances. Objective: To determine the prevalence of dehydration among students of Gadjah Mada University.Method: An observational study with the cross-sectional design were conducted and involved 274 students of Gadjah Mada University. Orthostatic measurement and interview of their activity and smoking habit were performed on all subjects. Results: The prevalence of dehydration were 60.9%. Type of activity and smoking habit did not affect the hydration status. Conclusion: Dehydration prevalence rate is still high on the students. As almost all students are dehydrated, then the factors that should be able to distinguish the condition of dehydration such as a type of activity and smoking habit, seems to give no effect in this study.

Introduction Saudi Arabia’s culturally diverse population is growing rapidly. The need for cultural competence is greatest in pediatric units where nurses provide care to children in collaboration with their parents. Method Nonprobability sampling of 394 nurses and cross-sectional descriptive design was used to investigate nurses’ cultural competence, and to examine the relationships between the variables and participants’ demographic data in pediatric units across five hospitals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, by asking nurses to complete a self-report questionnaire. Results The results suggest a high degree of cultural competency. Participants’ scores indicated high levels of perceived cultural awareness, sensitivity, and cultural competence behavior for performance. Discussion This study supports the 3-D Puzzle Model of culturally congruent care for cultural competence, which assumes that cultural competence is deeply influenced by one’s experiences. The findings revealed a high level of cultural competence despite a lack of information with respect to patient views.

AbstractObjectiveTo investigate community engagement with the health benefits of dietary fibre (DF) and its potential as a framework for the promotion of increased consumption of resistant starch (RS).SettingA nationwide postal Food and Health Survey conducted in Australia by CSIRO Human Nutrition.SubjectsAdults aged 18 years and above, selected at random from the Australian Electoral Roll (n 849).DesignA cross-sectional design was employed to analyse ratings of (i) the importance of various RS health and functional claims and (ii) receptiveness to different foods as RS delivery vehicles, according to the respondents’ level of fibre engagement as classified under the Precaution Adoption Process Model (PAPM) of Health Behaviour.ResultsThere was a high level of recognition (89·5 %) of DF as being important for health. Significant gender differences were found for ratings of RS attributes and RS delivery options. Women were both more fibre-engaged than men and more receptive than men to RS and its potential benefits. Ratings of the acceptability of several foods as means of delivering RS revealed a general preference for healthy staples over indulgences, with the margin between acceptability of staples and indulgences increasing markedly with increased fibre engagement.ConclusionsApplication of the PAPM to awareness of DF reveals a ready-made target group for health messages about RS and pockets of differential potential receptiveness. The findings support the promotion of RS as providing health benefits of DF with the added reduction of risk of serious disease, its delivery through healthy staples and the targeting of messages at both fibre-engaged individuals and women in general.
