The physicochemical, total phenolics, flavonoids, and antioxidant activity were evaluated for biochemical characterization of coriander and mustard floral honey. The total phenolics, flavonoids and antioxidant activity were analyzed using UV-VIS spectrophotometer. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) was used to evaluate the chemical characteristic of coriander and mustard floral honey. The total phenolics content was ranged from 294 to 462 mg gallic acid equivalent kg-1 of honey. The total flavonoid content was ranged from 43 to 53 mg quercetin equivalent kg-1 of honey. Antioxidant activity results were expressed as inhibitory concentration (IC50) value ranged from 4.58 to 5.54 mg mL-1. FT-IR spectra showed the presence of alcohols, carboxylic acids, esters, ethers, phenols, and amines in both floral honey samples. This study discovered that coriander floral honey is more affluent than mustard floral honey in nutritional as well as medicinal aspects. At a glance the processing of honey by heating did not affect the phenolics, flavonoid, and antioxidants of honey; even processed honey contains higher phenols and antioxidants. The FT-IR spectra showed the similarity in both kinds of honey refers to chemical constituents. This study will help the researcher and honey consumer to find out the higher bioactive medicinal compounds containing honey.

AbstractGlucoamylase from the yeast Saccharomycopsis fibuligera R64 (GLL1) has successfully been purified and characterized. The molecular mass of the enzyme was 56,583 Da as determined by mass spectrometry. The purified enzyme demonstrated optimum activity in the pH range of 5.6–6.4 and at 50°C. The activity of the enzyme was inhibited by acarbose with the IC50 value of 5 μM. GLL1 shares high amino acid sequence identity with GLU1 and GLA1, which are Saccharomycopsis fibuligera glucoamylases from the strains HUT7212 and KZ, respectively. The properties of GLL1, however, resemble that of GLU1. The elucidation of the primary structure of GLL1 contributes to the explanation of this finding.

Increasing frequency of native jellyfish proliferations and massive appearance of non-indigenous jellyfish species recently concur to impact Mediterranean coastal ecosystems and human activities at sea. Nonetheless, jellyfish biomass may represent an exploitable novel resource to coastal communities, with reference to its potential use in the pharmaceutical, nutritional, and nutraceutical Blue Growth sectors. The zooxanthellate jellyfish Cassiopea andromeda, Forsskål, 1775 (Cnidaria, Rhizostomeae) entered the Levant Sea through the Suez Canal and spread towards the Western Mediterranean to reach Malta, Tunisia, and recently also the Italian coasts. Here we report on the biochemical characterization and antioxidant activity of C. andromeda specimens with a discussion on their relative biological activities. The biochemical characterization of the aqueous (PBS) and hydroalcoholic (80% ethanol) soluble components of C. andromeda were performed for whole jellyfish, as well as separately for umbrella and oral arms. The insoluble components were hydrolyzed by sequential enzymatic digestion with pepsin and collagenase. The composition and antioxidant activity of the insoluble and enzymatically digestible fractions were not affected by the pre-extraction types, resulting into collagen- and non-collagen-derived peptides with antioxidant activity. Both soluble compounds and hydrolyzed fractions were characterized for the content of proteins, phenolic compounds, and lipids. The presence of compounds coming from the endosymbiont zooxanthellae was also detected. The notable yield and the considerable antioxidant activity detected make this species worthy of further study for its potential biotechnological sustainable exploitation.

In this paper, some chalcone derivatives (C1, C2) were synthesized based on the reaction of equal amount of substituted acetophenone and substituted banzaldehyde in basic medium. Oxazine and thiazine derivatives were prepared from the reaction of chalcones (C1-C2) with urea and thiourea respectively in a basic medium. Pyrazole derivatives were prepared based on the reaction of chalcones with hydrazine mono hydrate or phenyl hydrazine in the presence of glacial acetic acid as a catalyst. The new synthesized compounds were identified using various physical techniques like1 H-NMR and FT-IR spectra.

Carthamus tinctorius Linn, also known as safflower, is a plant with the potential of being used in the production of antimalarial drugs. The purpose of this study was to isolate and identify the steroid compounds in the safflower and determine its antimalarial activity in vitro. The isolation process was conducted through extraction and chromatography methods. Then, the characterization of the isolated compounds was conducted through spectroscopic techniques which include Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), NMR 1-D (1H and 13C-NMR), and NMR 2-D (HMQC, HMBC, and H-H COZY) as well as comparing data with the existing literatures. In addition, the tests conducted were with variations of isolate concentrations (10, 1, 0.1, 0.01, and 0.001 μg/mL) against 3D7 strain of Plasmodium falciparum. Based on the FT-IR spectroscopic data, the steroid compounds isolated from safflowers might be stigmasterols. In addition, the isolates had -OH functional group in the region of 3431 cm-1, C-O in the region of 1053 cm-1, and Csp3-H in regions of 2960, 2934, and 2865 cm-1. The NMR 1-D data showed presence of 29 carbon atoms, while the protons were 48 in number. Furthermore, the IC50 value of the compound was 34.03 μg/mL with a percentage inhibition of 43.92% against the growth of P. falciparum. Therefore, it was classified as inactive agent in inhibiting the growth of malaria parasites, however, it could be used as a marker compound in C. tinctorius Linn extract.

Amorphous materials of the Si -( B )- C - N system have recently attracted considerable interest because of its hardness, low density, durability at extremely high temperature and easy to be prepared from precursor compounds by polymer route. The materials show a great potential to be used in the field of the Thermal Protective System (TPS) for the aircrafts, while the microstructure and chemical configuration are still not clearly revealed due to its complicated covalent character for this multi-component amorphous material. This paper focused on the characterization of polymer derived Si -( B )- C - N amorphous ceramic, various method were employed in order to obtain accurate information about the microstructure, chemical composition, bonding mode of components, such as TEM, EPMA, NMR and FT-IR. SiC crystalline was found existing in the amorphous glass, which indicates the preparation process was achieved accompanied by crystallization of SiC from polymer precursor. The microstructure of the researched material was analyzed and relative accurate chemical composition was obtained on the basis of characterization result, furthermore the covalent character of the amorphous material was deduced according to the characterization results obtained.

In this research, a kind of nonwoven composite used for the absorption of heavy mental ions has been made. The composite was made of two layers of ES thermal bonded nonwovens as the protective layers and the PAN-amidoxime nanofibers which are prepared through the modification of electrospun PAN nanofibers as the interlayer. The composition was achieved by the ultrasonic bonding method. After the composition the PAN nanofibers were modified by grafting the amidoxime group to PAN. The results of FT-IR spectra and FE-SEM indicated that nitrile groups in PAN were partly converted into amidoxime groups and there were no serious cracks on the surface of PAN-amidoxime nanofibers. The results show that the amidoxime groups have been proved to be grafted to the PAN nanofibers with the percent grafting of 81.6%.

Coconuts with various traits are available in different coconut growing countries. The pink husk is one such trait that has already been reported in coconut. There is a demand for tender nut water from pink husked types of coconut to treat hepatitis by traditional medicinal practitioners. Present studies were carried out to characterize pink husked types identified in Guam Tall variety of coconut. There were no morphological differences with respect to the nut characters between pink and non-pink husked types. Biochemical characterization of pink husked types revealed significantly higher total phenol content in the tender nut water of pink husked types than normal husked types. A significantly higher protein content of 86 mg 100 mL-1 was noted in pink husked type, compared to normal husked type with 58.7 mg 100 mL-1. Higher free radical scavenging activity based on DPPH assay with pink husked type was recorded with an IC50 value of 266.7 compared to normal type with an IC50 value of 358. Similarly, phosphomolybdate assay also revealed higher scavenging activity of pink husked type based on the IC50 value of 415.2 compared to 637.9 observed in normal husked type. Anthocyanin content of 25.98 mg 100g-1 fresh weight was noted in the exocarp of pink husked types, and it was negligible in normal husked type. These results justify the use of pink husked coconuts in various traditional medicines. There is tremendous potential for exploiting pink husked types of coconut in the pharmaceutical industry.

Background: Deinbollia pinnata belonging to Sapindaceae family are known as medicinal plants for the treatment of human diseases. Because of human over-exploitation, the choice of phytochemicals re-search and screening was basically made to add to the available compounds and ethno-medicinal records. Objective: To investigate phytochemicals and their antioxidant activities. Method: Antioxidant assays (DPPH, ABTS, FRAP) activities; phytochemical contents (Folin Ciocalteaus’s (FC) and aluminum chloride) methods; and phytochemical analysis were employed. Successful characterization of isolates using spectroscopic methods (1H NMR, 13C NMR, FTIR and GC-MS analysis). Results: Alkaloid, simple sugar, phenolics, tannins and steriods were present in all the parts. Saponin, terpenes and flavonoids were found in both leaves and root bark, while root bark and heartwood possessed quinones. The methanol extracts demonstrated total phenolic content at 75. 9 ± 2.05 GAE (mg GAE/g dw) and total flavonoid content at 88.41 ± 0.56 QUE (mg QUE/g dw). The plant extracts showed good DPPH scavenging activity with percentage inhibition more than 70% at 125 ppm. The methanol extracts showed excellent antioxidant activity towards ABTS assay with the IC50 value of 13.68 µg/mL. The extracts also exhibited the most potent ferric ion reducer at 3.45 ± 1.30 mM FRAP equivalent. Methyl gallate (2) displayed the highest antioxidant radical scavenging activity towards DPPH assay with the IC50 value of 0.19 µg/mL and pyrogallol (4) showed the highest ABTS activity with the SC50 value of 7.44 µg/mL. While, 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (1) also showed the potential as ferric ion reducer ranging from 0.67± 0.01 to 3.63±0.12 mM FRAP equivalent respectively. Conclusion: Based on the antioxidant activity, methanolic extracts and its isolated constituents can be used as antioxidant sources for the management of oxidative causative diseases. Being the first report of these phytochemicals from genius Deinbollia and specie pinnata.
