Female victims of domestic violence often experience depression. This research used Empathic Love Therapy (ELT) to reduce depressive symptoms, by enabling individual to understand one-self deeper by realizing, understanding, accepting, and loving all aspects of the self, which is the early process of healing. This research is quasi-experiment research using a single group simple interrupted time series design. Five women aged 30-60 years old who experience depression, based on BDI (Beck Depression Inventory) score, participated in an eight-session therapy. Participants were recruited purposively based on theory-based or operational construct sampling. Data analysis combined quantitative and qualitative methods, of which Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test was used for quantitative analysis, whereas qualitative analysis adopted a descriptive analysis. Quantitative findings significant difference in BDI score between before and after treatment (Z = -2.023 with p=  0.043<0.05). Qualitative findings showed that participants were able to find survival personality that emerged from past painful experiences and plays a role in the depression symptoms they are currently experiencing. With the power of love they find from God, they are able to accept themselves, and focus their lives on their potential and positive future plans. Therefore, it can be concluded that Empathic Love Therapy is effective to be used to reduce depressive symptoms.

<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Patients with chemosensory dysfunction frequently report symptoms of depression. The current study aims to clarify whether the type (smell dysfunction, taste dysfunction, and mixed smell and taste dysfunction), severity, duration, or cause of dysfunction have differential impacts on the symptoms of depression. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> 899 patients with chemosensory disorders and 62 controls were included. Following a structured interview and an otorhinolaryngological examination, subjects underwent olfactory tests (Sniffin’ Sticks), gustatory tests (taste sprays) and an assessment of depressive symptoms (Beck Depression Inventory). Information on the cause and duration of disorders was also collected. <b><i>Results:</i></b> Patients with combined olfactory/gustatory dysfunction had higher depression scores than patients with smell dysfunction only and controls, and no significant difference was found between the smell dysfunction and controls. Anosmia patients, but not hyposmia patients, exhibited higher depression scores than controls. Among various causes of chemosensory disorders, patients from the posttraumatic group had higher depression scores than patients with other causes of chemosensory dysfunction (sinonasal, idiopathic, or postinfectious). Multiple linear regression analyses suggested that reduced olfactory function was associated with enhanced depression scores in the olfactory disorders group (<i>B</i> = −0.326, <i>t</i> = −2.294, and <i>p</i> = 0.02) and in all patients with chemosensory disorders (<i>B</i> = −0.374, <i>t</i> = −2.550, <i>p</i> = 0.017). <b><i>Discussion/Conclusion:</i></b> Simultaneously decreased input of olfaction and gustation seems to have an additive effect on the exacerbation of emotional dysfunction. Early intervention should be considered for depression symptoms in patients with mixed olfactory/gustatory dysfunction in clinical practice.

Indonesia is the fourth largest country in the world in terms of population size. However, the potential of large amounts of Indonesian human resources cannot be optimized due to the continuing high number of unemployed people. Rumah Gemilang Indonesia (RGI) is a program run by the Al-Azhar National Amil Zakat Institute, focusing on the eradication of productive-age unemployment. The purpose of this research is to examine the implementation of the mustahiq training organized by RGI and to evaluate the running of mustahiq training at the reaction level, learning level, behavioral level, and results level. The methods used to process and analyze the data are descriptive analysis and paired data t-test. The result shows that the mustahiq training organized by RGI has been effective. At the reaction level, the respondents were quite contented with the training. The result of the paired data t-test at the learning level shows that there is a significant difference inmustahiqs’ competence before and after the training. At the behavioral level, on average, the respondents always apply the training materials to their job. At the results level, RGI’s vision to increase the level of work readiness has been achieved. Keyword: Kirkpatrick model, paired data t-test, productive zakat, training effectiveness, unemployment measure

Background: Depression is consistently shown to predict lower rates of breastfeeding. In a handful of studies, breastfeeding has predicted lower depression symptoms. However, studies demonstrating the latter are limited in their measurement of both depression and breastfeeding and have not followed participants from pregnancy across the postpartum period. Research Aim: The primary aim of this study was to describe breastfeeding intentions and behaviors for the first 12 months postpartum among nonmedicated depressed, antidepressant-exposed, and control participants. The secondary aim was to examine group differences in the association between depressive symptoms and breastfeeding duration up to 12 months postpartum. Methods: First-trimester women ( N = 212) were recruited into a prospective longitudinal study. Depressive disorders at baseline were diagnosed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders, and depressive symptoms were measured at the first and second trimesters and 6 and 12 months postpartum using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Breastfeeding duration, support from family and employers, and perceptions of participants’ experience were measured. Results: Depressed women and antidepressant-exposed women reported a trend toward lower rates of intention, initiation, and duration, but this did not reach statistical significance. There was a statistically significant difference on depressive symptoms for women taking antidepressants during pregnancy, compared with controls, when they continued to breastfeed for 12 months postpartum. Conclusions: This study did not find a strong association between depression or antidepressant use and intention to breastfeed, partner breastfeeding support, or initiation or duration of breastfeeding. However, for women who took antidepressants, there was evidence that breastfeeding for 12 months was associated with lower depressive symptoms.

Both specialized domestic violence (DV) courts and batterer intervention programs were developed to more adequately address intimate partner abuse and recidivism; however, little research has studied them concurrently. The current research examined clinical outcomes and police-reported recidivism in 382 men mandated to attend the Calgary Counselling Centre’s Responsible Choices for Men’s (RCM) groups between 1998 and 2009, before and after a specialized DV court was established in 2001. The study examines associations between categorical demographic and criminal justice variables, most of which were not correlated with post-group recidivism. Before the specialized court was implemented, 45 RCM members reported significantly more clinical issues at pretest than the 282 RCM members after court implementation (all scores adjusted by social desirability), although the effect sizes were negligible. Regarding group outcomes, depression, anxiety, and self-esteem (adjusted for social desirability) significantly improved on average for all RCM members irrespective of court implementation. Before the specialized DV court was developed, recidivism occurred after RCM program completion for a large proportion of men (41.2%), compared with only 8.2% after court implementation, a significant difference with a moderate effect size. The recidivism results are interpreted in the context of the significant justice and community collaborations entailed in creating the specialized DV court.

Depressive symptom is the most frequent psychological problem reported among chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients being treated by hemodialysis. This article evaluates the effectiveness of multidisciplinary rehabilitation on depressive symptoms in hemodialysis patients and clarifies the role of nurses. This quasi-experimental study was done on 30 patients in the hemodialysis center (educational hospital) in 2013. Eight rehabilitation plans were conducted by nurses. Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) was used before and after intervention. Our data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Result of this study shows that there was a significant difference between mean depressive symptom score before (36.4 ± 10.9) and after (10.5 ± 3.1) rehabilitation ( p < .001). It is recommended that rehabilitation program be implemented in all hemodialysis centers with the participation of specialists in different fields.

Objectives An overlap between the somatic symptoms of depression and those of uremia seen in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients may affect the diagnosis of depression. This study aims to evaluate the effect of hemodialysis on the diagnosis of depression among patients on maintenance hemodialysis as dialysis diminishes the uremic symptoms, and to compare depression scores before and after dialysis. Methods This was a cross-sectional analytic study conducted from November 2018 through April 2019, in three tertiary hospitals. Consenting participants aged 18 years or older, who had received hemodialysis for at least three months were included. The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) tool was used to collect patients’ data and to identify symptoms of depression Pre- and post-hemodialysis. Depression scores were compared using the paired sample Wilcoxon rank test or the McNemar test, where appropriate. Results Overall, 163 participants were enrolled in the study. The average age of the participants was 56.5 years old, whereas 44.8% were females. The prevalence of depressive symptoms before hemodialysis was 48.5%, with prevalence of mild, moderate and moderately severe of 34.4%, 11.7% and 2.5%, respectively. On the other hand, the prevalence of depressive symptoms after hemodialysis was 46.6% with 36.8%, 9.2% and 0.6% of the participants reporting mild, moderate and moderately severe symptoms, respectively. We found no significant difference in depression scores before and after dialysis (p-values > 0.05). Conclusion Our study supports the fact that the prevalence of depression is high among patients with ESRD on maintenance hemodialysis. We didn’t find a significant difference in depression scores among hemodialysis patients before and after dialysis, with negligible effect of uremic symptoms on the diagnosis of depression. We suggest adopting routine screening of depression among this high-risk group of patients.

ABSTRACT Sundown syndrome is characterized by the sudden appearance of neuropsychiatric symptoms such as agitation, confusion and anxiety in a chronologic fashion, usually during late afternoon or early evening. Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of sundown syndrome in university hospital wards and its relationship with anxiety/depression symptoms, cognitive decline, and clinical and demographic variables. Methods: We evaluated 70 patients admitted to the Lauro Wanderley University Hospital (HULW), João Pessoa-PB, Brazil. Data collection instruments were the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM), the Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Results: Mean patient age was 68.4±6.4 years, 55.7% were male, 67.1% were illiterate or had incomplete primary education. It was observed that 14.3% of patients had delirium, 15.7% had cognitive deficits, while 21.4% and 18.6% had anxious and depressive symptoms, respectively. The age of patients with delirium (71.9±8.7) was significantly higher than those without (67.8±5.8). At 95% confidence, there was a significant difference in the groups with and without delirium for the MMSE and HADS-D scales. Conclusion: We verified the occurrence of delirium compatible with the sundown syndrome and associated with depressive symptoms and cognitive deficit, with no apparent relationship with infectious processes or fever, number of drugs used, hospital stay or anxious symptomatology.
