This chapter shows that after a long period of stability, US prison population increased more than fivefold in the 35 years after 1972. A statistical analysis also suggests that even though each state makes independent penal policy, the growth of prison population is best viewed as a single national process.

The article presents a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the victims of legal entities in the Russian Federation in the period from 2014 to 2018. The monitoring and statistical analysis made it possible to identify 6 chapters of the Criminal code of the Russian Federation, according to which the most victims of legal entities are registered over the past 5 years. Consideration of the status and trends of criminogenic victimization of legal entities over a long period allows us to see the real number of victims and to understand the scale of the identified problem.

abstract Statistical analysis of strong-motion records of the 1966 Parkfield earthquake and the 1952 Taft earthquake indicates that the usable limit of long period of velocity and displacement, calculated by integration of the accelerogram records, is restricted mainly by human reading and base line correction errors. Base line correction errors arise from uncertainties in the coefficients of the fitted straight base line. Calculation by the jackknife method of the variances of the errors in displacement records from linear base line corrections indicates that these errors are more pronounced in the long-period (above 7 sec) range than errors from digitization. The records analyzed in this paper indicate that long-period limits due to the combined errors vary between 7 and 14 sec. Beyond these limits components of displacement spectra from the present analog accelerograms are not reliable measures of ground motion.

Bourdieu's early fieldwork which included field observation, statistical analysis, and the use of photography to capture, represent, and analyse Algerian society in its complexity, took place within the unusual context of the Algerian War of Independence (1954–62). A number of his photographs of Algerian life depict the physical dislocation of Algerian peasantry into shanty towns largely as the result of rapid socio-economic and cultural change introduced by French colonisation and war. Although this fieldwork was to fundamentally shape his subsequent oeuvre, substantive issues which arose out of this research including colonialism, racism, and migration, tended to disappear in his later writings. This paper will argue that Bourdieu's discussion of colonialism in his early work, together with arguments developed by his student and co-author, Abdelmalek Sayad, provide a basis for understanding contemporary processes of ethno-racial domination and migration.
