Hydropower is one of the cleanest, renewable and environmentally benign sources of energy. Nepal is blessed with immense source of water resources and huge hydropower potential. The Kali Gandaki ‘A’ (KGA) Hydroelectric Project is the largest hydropower project constructed so far in Nepal. The project is a daily pondage type scheme with an installed capacity of 144 MW. The KGA is one of the first largest hydropower projects that has been well studied environmentally and socially in the pre-project, construction and operation stages. A full team of multi-disciplinary professionals was involved during the construction phase to monitor environmental impacts and compliance with contract clauses, and to implement the mitigation measures. Implementation of KGA in what was once considered as a remote area, has resulted in multifold beneficial impacts to the local community. Improvement of public infrastructure, enhanced educational facilities and employment of local populations, including affected families during project construction and operation phase, have enhanced the quality of rural lives. The KGA operation has contributed significantly to Nepal’s power system and has boosted the economic development of the country. After white landowners evicted black sharecroppers in late 1960 for registering to vote, activists in Fayette and Haywood Counties organized ‘Tent Cities' in a bid to focus national media attention on their plight. Over the decade, it developed into a wide-reaching campaign for desegregation in public accommodations and education, welfare reform, voting rights, and sustained community improvement measures. This little-known episode significantly advances scholarly understanding of rural civil rights activism. Notably this story reveals complex dualities including: a local grassroots movement bolstered by a national framework of organizations and social networks; leadership on national, state and local levels; collaboration despite tensions along race, age, class and gender lines; coexistence of nonviolent strategies and armed self-defense; and varied initiatives demonstrating activists’ focus on local needs.

Infrastructure is important to livability of any community, hence efforts have been made by the government and the communities to provide these infrastructures. This is because it is evident that only government cannot provide all the needed infrastructures, so there is need for collaborative efforts which is done by participation of the community in the implementation of the provision of infrastructure. The collaborative effort was adopted by the Community and Social Development Projects (CSDP), a World-Bank assisted project. This study was carried out in Ibule-Soro community, in Ifedore Local Government Area, Ondo State. In all, 400 buildings were identified in the community by the community leaders out of which 10% were selected, which gave a sample size of 40 for the questionnaire administration; discussion session was held with the leaders of the community. Concept of community development and CSDP was critiqued. Findings revealed that the community is not poor, as 65% of the respondents earned above N30,000 which is the minimum wage in Nigeria, this may be due majorly to the fact that 85% of the respondents are engaged in one or the other activity like government employment, private sector or self-employed. Also, 65% of the respondents submitted that the community heard about CSDP through the community leader. It took less than six months between when the community informed the office and when the office responded to the community. The projects implemented in the community are renovation of the block of six classrooms in the Jooro high school and extension of 31 electric poles in Ibule-Soro community. The projects have lots of positive impact on the community as it has enhanced increase in the number of students’ enrolment at Jooro high school and the electric poles extension has improved the electric voltage in the community. The use of the participatory approach to implementation of community projects was recommended for adoption in similar future projects.

It is substantiated that under modern conditions the effective policy of our state is a catalyst for initiating and implementing systemic transformations, first of all, in the direction of development of local self-government and territorial organization of power. Creation of favorable conditions for effective economic activity and business development in the community, improvement of the living conditions of the population located in the united territory and the quality of services provided to residents and consumers of products, works and services, organization of citizens’ safe life, development of the community’s human capital etc. are identified as benefits of competitive territorial communities in Ukraine formation. The recent publications and researches devoted to an issue of studying the legal status of territorial community, problems of the organization and activity of this institute of local government are analyzed. For the purpose of the identification of basic postulates of the united territorial communities in Ukraine development, the theoretical bases of this process are generalized that, in turn, made it possible to determine objective preconditions of activation for their formation. It is determined that the Assembly of European Regions defines the concept of "region" as a territorial association under the direct jurisdiction of a sovereign state with a system of self-government, which must have its own constitution, autonomy or other law that constitutes state law and defines the organization and powers of the region. This approach focuses on a certain sovereignty of the socio-economic complex of the region and determines that being part of the system "state", the region is a separate structural unit - a system with its own patterns and specifics of development. The conditional structure of the governing bodies of the united territorial communities in Ukraine is also presented. An algorithm and vectors for the implementation of strategic and operational goals, which should be set by the united territorial communities to ensure the effective development of voluntary association of the territorial community is offered.
