The results of an experimental study of damage for the structural material MoNiCa (it is high-strength cast iron VCHTG – patent of the Republic of Belarus № 15617) on sliding friction and mechano-sliding fatigue are analyzed in the report. Tests of the mechanical system shaft (a sample with a working part diameter of 10 mm made of 0.45 % carbon steel) - an insert (a prismatic counter sample with a cross section of 10 ´ 10 mm made of MoNiCa) were carried out. The kinetics of the change in average wear at 8 local points along the perimeter of the dangerous area of the sample is given for contact loads FN from 20 to 92 N of the mechanical system under study with MoNiCa inserts without heat treatment and with heat treatment. The test results of the system under study are also presented in the form of sliding friction and mechano-sliding fatigue curves in coordinates of the contact load FN – the number of cycles N until the limit state.

<p>Welded joints is adopted rather than bolted joints for megastructure’s connections because the former can carry large force. However, the former has several problems, such as quality control of welding in situ, which the latter can solve. By contrast, as the load transfer ratio of each bolt becomes uneven proportionally to the number of bolts, local slip around extreme bolts occurs before the whole slip. Extreme bolts to which a large shear force is applied will break before other bolts. For utilizing the strength of all bolts, the problem is solved by improving shear deformation capacity in faying surface with novel surface treatment. Here, the treatment concepts were explored, and the coating’s effectiveness was evaluated through friction tests. The deformation capacity can be twice or more than that of conventional treatment, and the slip coefficient doesn’t depend on contact pressure. These features have the advantage to give stable slip behaviour.</p>

The technological evolution in the offshore sector points out a trend towards an increasing use of high strength steels (grade 80ksi and higher), for both pipelines and risers. Pipeline specifications for deepwater offshore fields demand developments in design criteria (i.e. limit state design), welding, installation, and laying technologies. As long as the market goes deeper in offshore exploration and production, the market trend is to use heavier pipes in steel grade X65/X70 and some technological limits from several fronts are faced and more attractive becomes for the market to have a lighter high strength 100ksi seamless steel grade. The joint industrial program (JIP), termed “Seamless 100 ksi weldable” launched by Tenaris in order to address the complex design issues of high strength Q&T seamless pipes for ultra deep water applications has been finalized. The 100ksi steel grade has been achieved in two wall thickness 16 mm and 25 mm. The main results from both phase I devoted to the development and production of seamless pipes with minimum 100ksi and phase II devoted to evaluate the high strength seamless pipe weldability will be addressed in this paper. Main microstructural features promoting the best strength-toughness results obtained from phase I and the results from phase II, where the heat affected zone (HAZ) characterization made using stringent qualifying configuration such as API RP2Z and the promising results after qualifying the girth welds simulating a typical offshore operation and the Engineering Critical Assessment for installation will be addressed. The results from this development are of interest of all oil & gas companies who are facing as an output from the design project analysis the need to have high strength seamless pipes.

The paper aims to study the actual operation of a rigid frame unit for coupling a crossbar with a column on high-strength bolts according to the standard 2.440-2 series using modern software systems of the component finite element method. Special attention was paid to the operation of nodal elements, as well as their stress-strain state. Based on the results of static calculations, the cross-sections of the elements under consideration, as well as the components of the node (plates, bolts, seams, etc.) were selected from the tables of the standard series. Subsequently, using the component finite element method serving as the basis of the IDEA StatiСa software, all the components of the node were mod-elled with respect to acting forces. The conducted calculations confirmed the suitability of the obtained node model for identifying inconsistencies in the series and modern standards. Using stresses on plates, bolt and welding forces, as well as several forms of vibration to assess the stability of compo-nents, the applicability of the node in question in the proposed configuration was evaluated. It turned out that the node failed to meet modern standards in terms of design conditions. Moreover, the serial bolts were overloaded by almost 38%, and some welds approached the limit state. When used in real conditions, this can lead to serious losses, including human lives. Recommendations are given for changing the specific configuration of the node in order to protect it from the destruction of any nature, including local buckling failure.

Bolted joints are highly loaded components and serious issues may arise from improper fastening and in particular from too high or too low preload. Friction at the underhead plays an important role, as it significantly affects the achievable preload for fixed and controlled tightening torque. In addition, multiple tightening is usually performed on connecting rod screws, which may be a further source of friction increment. This study investigates the effect of two surface treatments, shot-peening and deep-rolling, on the tribological properties upon bolt fastening. This topic was tackled experimentally and the campaign involved MJ9 X 1 4 g grade 13.9 36 NiCrMo connecting rod screws, in both lubricated and dry conditions. The results, processed by statistical tools, indicate that deep-rolling does not affect friction, whereas shot-peening yields significant benefits. As an effect of the generation of dimples and multiple contacts, it is able to lower (up to 25%) the bearing frictional coefficient in lubricated conditions, also making the friction level independent of the number of re-tightenings. For a dry surface, an even higher friction decrease (up to 30%) is achieved. Without lubrication, the friction coefficient keeps increasing for the incremented number of tightenings, but the increase rate is lowered with respect to the untreated surface.

As known, high-strength compressed concrete elements have brittle behavior, and elastic-plastic deformations do not appear practically up to their ultimate limit state (ULS). This problem is solved in modern practice by adding fibers that allow development of nonlinear deformations in such elements. As a rule, are applied steel fibers that proved high efficiency and contribute ductile behavior of compressed high-strength concrete (HSC) elements as well as the desired effect at long-term loading (for other types of fibers, the second problem is still not enough investigated). However, accurate prediction of the ULS for abovementioned compression elements is still very important and current. With this aim, it is proposed to use transverse deformations in HSC to analyze compression elements' behavior at stages close to ultimate. It is shown that, until the appearance of nonlinear transverse deformations (cracks formation), these deformations are about 5-6 times lower than the longitudinal ones. When cracks appear, the tensile stress-strain relationship in the transverse direction becomes nonlinear. This fact enables to predict that the longitudinal deformations approach the ultimate value. Laboratory tests were carried out on 21 cylindrical HSC specimens with various steel fibers content (0, 20, 30, 40, and 60 kg/m3). As a result, dependences of transverse deformations on longitudinal ones were obtained. These dependences previously proposed by the authors’ concept of the structural phenomenon allow proper estimation of the compressed HSC state up to failure. Good agreement between experimental and theoretical results forms a basis for further development of modern steel fibered HSC theory and first of all nonlinear behavior of HSC.

High strength steels (X100 and X120) that are being considered for high pressure gas pipelines differ from conventional steels by exhibiting lower work hardening capacity, lower strain to failure and softening of their HAZ. These differences impact burst limit state and tensile limit state, in addition to crack arrest. In this paper, the impact of the variations in mechanical properties on the reliability of pipe limit states involving ductile burst of damaged or corroded pipe is examined. The paper presents the results of burst limit state analysis using state-of-the-art plastic burst models of strain hardening pipe and considering all the uncertainties that impact the margin of safety of pipes subject to internal pressure. Intact pipes, corroded pipes and externally damaged pipes are considered. A case study comparing the differences between normal strength (X60) pipeline and high strength (X100) pipeline is also presented.
