“Let’s Chat”: A qualitative study exploring intergenerational communication on social media group chats as a cancer prevention intervention opportunity among Vietnamese American families (Preprint)

BACKGROUND The adoption of mobile technology in the family context presents a novel cancer prevention opportunity. There have been few studies to our knowledge that have utilized private social media group chats as a way to promote health information. OBJECTIVE In this formative study, we investigate how family group chat platforms can be leveraged to encourage colorectal, HPV vaccination, and cervical cancer screening among intergenerational Vietnamese American families. METHODS Twenty semi-structured interviews were conducted with Vietnamese young adults to co-create a communication intervention for introducing cancer screening information as part of family social media group chats. RESULTS 13 of the 20 young adults (65%) reported having more than one group chat with immediate and extended family. Preventive health was not a typical topic of family conversations, while food, family announcements, personal updates, humorous videos or photos, and current events were. Young adults expressed openness to initiating conversation with family members about cancer prevention but also raised concerns that may influence family members’ receptivity to the messages. Themes that potentially could impact family members’ willingness to accept cancer prevention messages included (a) family status and hierarchy, (b) gender dynamics, (c) family relational closeness, and (d) source trust and credibility. These considerations may impact whether families will be open to receiving cancer screening information and acting on it. Participants also mentioned practical considerations for intervention and message design including the (a) Vietnamese cultural conversation etiquette of “hỏi thăm,” (b) respect for a doctor’s recommendation, (c) prevention vs. symptom orientation, (d) the FHA’s bilingual capacity, and (e) the busy lives of family members. In response to exemplar messages, participants mentioned that they would prefer to personalize template messages to accommodate conversational norms in their family group chats. CONCLUSIONS Findings from this study inform the development of a social media intervention for increasing preventive cancer screening in Vietnamese American families.

Summary COVID-19 and the related quarantine disrupted young adults’ academic and professional life, daily routine and socio-emotional well-being. This cross-sectional study focused on the emotional and behavioural responses of a young adult population during the COVID-19-related quarantine in April 2020, in Greece. The study was conducted through an online survey. A total of 1559 young adults, aged 18−30 years, completed Steele’s Social Responsibility Motivation Scale and the De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale, and answered questions about compliance with instructions, quarantine-related behaviours and coping strategies. According to the results, participants displayed a relatively high sense of social responsibility (M = 16.09, SD = 2.13) and a trend towards moderate feeling of loneliness (M = 2.65, SD = 1.62); young women reported significantly higher levels of loneliness than men. The majority complied with instructions often (46.4%) or always (44.8%). Significantly more women created a new social media account and used the social media longer than 5 h/day, compared with men. Resorting to religion, practicing sports and sharing thoughts and feelings about COVID-19 with others predicted higher levels of social responsibility; humour, practicing sports and sharing thoughts and feelings about COVID-19 with others predicted lower levels of loneliness. Conclusively, COVID-19 is expected to have a significant psychological impact on young adults. Currently, Greece is going through the second quarantine period. This study raises awareness about loneliness in young adults during the COVID-19-related quarantine and highlights the importance of developing online programmes, attractive to younger people, to nurture adaptive coping strategies against loneliness.

On a daily basis, individuals between 12 and 25 years of age engage with their mobile devices for many hours. Social Media Use (SMU) has important implications for the social life of younger individuals in particular. However, measuring SMU and its effects often poses challenges to researchers. In this exploratory study, we focus on some of these challenges, by addressing how plurality in the measurement and age-specific characteristics of SMU can influence its relationship with measures of subjective mental health (MH). We conducted a survey among a nationally representative sample of Dutch adolescents and young adults ( N = 3,669). Using these data, we show that measures of SMU show little similarity with each other, and that age-group differences underlie SMU. Similar to the small associations previously shown in social media-effects research, we also find some evidence that greater SMU associates to drops and to increases in MH. Albeit nuanced, associations between SMU and MH were found to be characterized by both linear and quadratic functions. These findings bear implications for the level of association between different measures of SMU and its theorized relationship with other dependent variables of interest in media-effects research.

There is a growing body of literature exploring the general population’s use of social media for assistance in dealing with stigmatized health issues. This study presents novel research examining the relationship between social media use and young adults. It utilizes a therapeutic affordance (TA) framework. Quantitative results from this study are complemented by qualitative data. The relationships between distinct social media and their TA (a–b) are presented to highlight their potential to impact positively on social and emotional well-being outcomes. Evidence includes broad support for “connection,” “narration,” and “collaboration” TAs in this context and the relationship between the use of distinct social media and perceived quality of life (QOL) outcomes (a–c). TA provides an appropriate and valuable theoretical framework which is useful for the development of an evidence-base from the analysis of young adult’s social media usage. An analysis of the association between social media and their QOL outcomes is presented according to the TA relationship pathway (a–c–b). The adoption of a TA framework enables a nuanced analysis of significant associations between specific social media, TA, and improved QOL outcomes. This study demonstrates the significant association between social media and perceived QOL outcomes in young adults.

Facebook Chat Application to Prompt and Assist Smoking Cessation Among Spanish-Speaking Young Adults in South Texas

Given how smart phones, internet services, and social media have shown great potential for assisting smoking cessation, we constructed a Facebook chat application based on our previous work with SMS texting services. This report summarizes findings from 2,364 Spanish-speaking young adults recruited through Facebook advertising in South Texas during the 2020 New Year holiday season. Among these service users, 926 (39%) were ready to make a quit attempt, and 26 (3.1%) of those users reported that they were tobacco free 1 month later. There were no responses to a chat question survey 72 days after the dates selected for quitting. Although more research with longer follow up is needed, these findings show that social media chat applications may be helpful for at least prompting quit attempts and short-term cessation among young adult Spanish-speaking smokers. There is no evidence of an impact on long-term cessation, and more research is clearly needed.
