BACKGROUND Health Informatics Systems (HIS) draw more attention as their benefits are further explored and becoming more evident. The improvement of patient care and the quality of health services are examples of such advantages. Nevertheless, proprietary systems are not always viable due to their high costs. OBJECTIVE We investigated the benefits and challenges of Open-Source Health informatics Systems (OHIS) adoption discussed in the literature, and we also mapped the real-world OHIS projects, with their technical and community characteristics. Both results guide us to address the aspects that still need to be overcome and also to identify the criteria to help managers and IT professionals in choosing the most suitable OHIS for their context. METHODS We conducted a Systematic Mapping Study to review the literature and also mined source code repositories of OHIS projects. We employ well-consolidated methods from the software engineering community, and we differentiate from similar related works by the use of a more systematic method and also to evaluate OHIS projects using objective software engineering metrics and artifacts. RESULTS We found 500 papers and 151 projects, selecting 26 works to analyze thoroughly and mining 38 active OHIS repositories. We mapped the benefits and challenges to adopt OHIS projects and identified the legal and technical characteristics of them. We propose a conceptual map to illustrate the relationship among all the OHIS adoption benefits. We then correlate how technical and documental artifacts from an OHIS project affect their expected benefits and challenges. Thus, we recommend a set of artifacts and metrics well established in the OSS community as the criteria necessary to evaluate an OHIS solution from a software engineering perspective. CONCLUSIONS OSS projects increase the quality of the HIS and solve several problems that are mostly linked with proprietary solutions. The OHIS ecosystem provides several possible solutions for adoption. However, one barrier to its adoption is misconceptions and misinformation on OSS in the HIS context. We address this challenge with a set of recommended aspects to OHIS project adoption to assist managers and IT professionals in evaluating OHIS solutions. Finally, we highlight the necessity of more research to cover specific technical challenges on OHIS adoption.

The evolution of software is necessary for the success of software systems. Studying the evolution of software and understanding it is a vocal topic of study in software engineering. One of the primary concepts of software evolution is that the internal quality of a software system declines when it evolves. In this paper, the method of evolution of the internal quality of object-oriented open-source software systems has been examined by applying a software metric approach. More specifically, we analyze how software systems evolve over versions regarding size and the relationship between size and different internal quality metrics. The results and observations of this research include: (i) there is a significant difference between different systems concerning the LOC variable (ii) there is a significant correlation between all pairwise comparisons of internal quality metrics, and (iii) the effect of complexity and inheritance on the LOC was positive and significant, while the effect of Coupling and Cohesion was not significant.

The steady rise of open source software (OSS) (Raymond, 1999) over the last few decades has made a noticeable impact on many sectors of society where software has a role to play. As reflected from the frequency of media articles, traffic on mailing lists, and growing research literature, OSS has garnered much support in the software community. Indeed, from the early days of GNU software, to X Window System, to Linux and its utilities, and more recently the Apache Software Project, OSS has changed the way software is developed and used. As the deployment of OSS increases, the issue of its quality with respect to its stakeholders arises. We contend that the open source community collectively bears responsibility of producing “high-quality” OSS. Lack of quality raises various risks for organizations adopting OSS (Golden, 2004). This article discusses the manifestation of quality in open source software development (OSSD) from a traditional software engineering standpoint. The organization is as follows. We first outline the background and related work necessary for the discussion that follows, and state our position. This is followed by a detailed treatment of key software engineering practices that directly or indirectly impact the quality of OSS. Next, challenges and directions for future research are outlined and, finally, concluding remarks are given.

Dental caries is a dental and oral health problem for the majority of the Indonesian population. Dental caries affects most children. Caries that occur in children is often not treated or treated, resulting in a toothache. This condition can have an impact on the general health of the child where the frequency of eating will decrease, resulting in disruption of growth and development that will affect the nutritional status of the child. Nutritional problems are caused by many factors that are interrelated both directly and indirectly. Directly affected by infectious diseases and insufficient nutrition in quantity and quality, while indirectly influenced by the range and quality of health services, inadequate parenting, poor sanitation conditions and low food security at the household level. This study aims to determine the relationship between the incidence of dental caries in children with the nutritional status of children aged 6-7 years SDI Kaniti Kabupaten Kupang in 2016. Data collection was carried out by performing dental examinations and measuring height and weight. The incidence rate of dental caries aged 6-7 years old SDI Kaniti Kabupaten Kupang in 2016 was in the high category (30.76%) and very high (37.17%) with an average 3-6 cavities and nutritional status of children aged 6- 7 years SDN Kaniti Kabupaten Kupang in 2016 was categorized as obese (26.92%) and normal (67.94%), so there was no correlation between the incidence of dental caries on the nutritional status of 6-7-year-olds in Kaniti Regency Kupang in 2016 because children who had high and very high caries incidence has fat and normal nutritional status. It is recommended to conduct further research on the factors that influence the high incidence of dental caries in children aged 6-7 years at SDN Kaniti, Kupang Tengah District, Kupang Regency.

Component-based software development (CBSD) is an efficient approach used by software developers to develop new software. The commercial off the shelf (COTS) and open-source software (OSS) are two styles to implement CBSD. The COTS provides the interface and depicts the black-box behavior, but does not support several software quality characteristics. On the other hard, OSS is a more efficient approach compared to COTS due to its source code availability. This research aims to identify the reusability level of OSS components from an online repository of OSS. The OSS components are classified based on Chidamber and Kemerer reusability metrics (CK-metrics). This paper proposed a mathematical model to establish the relationship between the reusability of CK-metrics. Reusability level of OSS component has been measured and most effective CK-metrics obtained by applying the Taguchi design and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The input parameters for the experimental design are evaluated based on the OSS repository. Performance analysis has been carried out based upon the interaction effect between the reusability of CK-metrics. Main effect plots are created to identify the most reusable component of the OSS. The genetic algorithm (GA) is used to predict the optimized value of the different control parameters. The results indicate that the OSS component reusability level is 0.698194. The reusability of software has a significant effect on the quality of software. The quality of software can be improved by increasing the reusability of software components.

Community source (a community-based open source) has emerged as an innovative approach to developing enterprise application software. Different from the conventional model of in-house development, community source creates a virtual community that pools human, financial, and technological resources from member organizations to develop custom software. Products of community source are available as open source software to all members. To better understand community source, the authors studied the Kuali project through interviewing its participants. The interview analysis revealed that community source faced a number of challenges in project management, particularly in the areas of staffing management and project sustainability. A viable solution to these issues, as supported by the findings in the interview and the literature review on the drivers and expected benefits of outsourcing, is outsourcing software development in community source projects. The authors accordingly proposed a research framework and seven propositions that warrant future investigation into the relationship between community source and software outsourcing.
