Background Families experiencing high levels of psychological distress are considered a particularly vulnerable population for adverse effects on mental and physical health. Moreover, highly stressed individuals engage less in mental health promoting activities and show low stress management competencies. App-based stress interventions seem promising for the treatment and prevention of stress outcomes and might be a low-threshold solution. Objective The aim of this study was to identify the requirements for a tailored app to reduce stress in a cohort of highly stressed families that have low stress management skills. Methods Parents (n=1008; age: mean 47.7 years, SD 6.1; female: 599/1008, 59.7%) completed an extensive web-based survey and were subdivided into a target (stressed individuals with low stress competency) and nontarget group according to their reported stress level and stress management competencies. Group differences were analyzed using analysis of variance. In principal component analysis with Kaiser varimax rotation, personally defined stress management goals were grouped into components. Linear regression models were also calculated. Results A 3-factor solution cumulatively explained 56% of the variance in personally defined goals of interest for stress management with (1) active strategies (25.61% explained variance), (2) general competency (17.95% explained variance) and (3) passive strategies (12.45% explained variance). The groups differed in age (F1,978=27.67, P<.001), health index (F1,958=246.14, P<.001), personally defined general-competency goal (F1,958=94.16 P<.001), as well as “information acquisition” (F1,971=14.75, P<.001) and “need for stimulation” (F1,981=54.49, P<.001) personality traits. A regression model showed that for the active strategies goals of interest, only app feature information or instructional videos had a significant effect (P=.02). The general competency factor showed none, and the passive strategies factor showed significant effects for 2 app features—suggestions for planning possible activities with the family (P=.01) and diaries for documentation and development of strategies (P=.03). Conclusions The results of this survey study highlight the need to develop an app to increase stress management competencies that takes into consideration perceived stress level, stress management skills, personality, and personally defined goals of the user. The content of the app should be tailored to previously detected personality traits, especially selective information acquisition and low need for stimulation. Furthermore, personally defined stress management goals seem to affect interest in some features.

BACKGROUND Families experiencing high levels of psychological distress are considered a particularly vulnerable population for adverse effects on mental and physical health. Moreover, highly stressed individuals engage less likely in mental health promoting activities and show low stress management competencies. App-based stress interventions seem promising for the treatment and prevention of stress outcomes and might be a low-threshold solution. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to identify the requirements for a tailored app to reduce stress in a cohort of highly stressed families that have low stress management skills. METHODS N=1008 parents (aged 47.7 ± 6.1; 59,7% females) completed an extensive online survey and were subdivided into a target and non-target group according to their reported stress level and stress management competencies. Group differences were analyzed using ANOVA. In a principal component analysis with Varimax Kaiser Rotation, personally defined stress management goals were grouped into components. Lastly, linear regression models were calculated. RESULTS A three-factor solution cumulatively explained 56% of the variance in personally defined goals of interest for stress management with (1) „active strategies" (25.61% explained variance), (2) „general competence" (17.95% explained variance) and (3) „passive strategies" (12.45% explained variance). The target and non-target groups differed in age (F(1, 978)=27.67, P<.001), health index (F(1, 958)=246.14, P<.001), personally defined „general competence“ goal (F(1, 958)=94.16 P<.001), and personality traits "information acquisition" (F(1, 971)=14.75, P<.001) and "need for stimulation" (F(1, 981)=54.49, P<.001). A regression model showed that for “active strategies” goals of interest, only the app-feature information or instructional videos had a significant effect. The "general competence"-factor showed no significant effect at all and the "passive strategies" factor showed a significant effect for two app features: (1) suggestions for planning possible activities with the family as well as (2) diaries for documentation and development of strategies. CONCLUSIONS The results of this survey study highlight the need to develop an app to increase stress management competencies in consideration of the perceived stress level, stress management skills, personality, and personally defined goals of the user. The content of the app should be tailored to priorly detected personality traits, especially selective information acquisition and low need for stimulation. Further, personally defined stress management goals seem to affect the interest in some features. CLINICALTRIAL

Adolescent levels are challenging and stressful. The stress management skills for these groups are important to achieve quality and life satisfaction. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the association between stress management skills and life satisfaction among secondary school students. In addition, this study also examines the differences stress management skills and life satisfaction by gender. This survey study involved 1,067 respondents consisting of students from form one to six (aged 13 to 18 years old) around Kota Kinabalu and Kudat, Sabah. The research instrument used in this study is the Emotional Quotient Inventory Youth Version (EQ-i: YV) and Cantril's Vertical Visual-Analog Scale Ladder of Life Satisfaction which has been translated into Malay. Data were analyzed by using correlation test and independent sample t-test. Results showed that there was a positive correlation between stress management skills and life satisfaction among secondary school students. Meanwhile, the results of the independent sample t-test analysis showed that there was a difference in stress management and life satisfaction by gender. Results indicated that stress management skills are very important because it is directly related to life satisfaction, especially for adolescents or generation Z nowadays.

Background Excessive stress has a negative impact on many aspects of life for both individuals and societies, from studying and working to health and well-being. Each individual has their unique level of stress-proneness, and positive or negative outcomes of stress may be affected by it. Technology-aided interventions have potential efficacy in the self-management of stress. However, current Web-based or mobile stress management solutions may not reach the individuals that would need them the most, that is, stress-sensitive people. Objective The aim of this study was to examine how personality is associated with stress among Finnish university students and their interest to use apps that help in managing stress. Methods We used 2 structured online questionnaires (combined, n=1001) that were advertised in the University of Helsinki’s mailing lists. The first questionnaire (n=635) was used to investigate intercorrelations between the Big Five personality variables (neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness) and other stress-related background variables. The second questionnaire (n=366) was used to study intercorrelations between the above-mentioned study variables and interest in using stress management apps. Results The quantitative findings of the first questionnaire showed that higher levels of extraversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness were associated with lower self-reported stress. Neuroticism, in turn, was found to be strongly associated with rumination, anxiety, and depression. The findings of the second questionnaire indicated that individuals characterized by the Big Five personality traits of neuroticism and agreeableness were particularly interested to use stress management apps (r=.27, P<.001 and r=.11, P=.032, respectively). Moreover, the binary logistic regression analysis revealed that when a person’s neuroticism is one SD above average (ie, it is higher than among 84% of people), the person has roughly 2 times higher odds of being interested in using a stress management app. Respectively, when a person’s agreeableness is one SD above average, the person has almost 1.4 times higher odds of being interested in using a stress management app. Conclusions Our results indicated that personality traits may have an influence on the adoption interest of stress management apps. Individuals with high neuroticism are, according to our results, adaptive in the sense that they are interested in using stress management apps that may benefit them. On the contrary, low agreeableness may lead to lower interest to use the mobile stress management apps. The practical implication is that future mobile stress interventions should meaningfully be adjusted to improve user engagement and support health even among less-motivated users, for instance, to successfully engage individuals with low agreeableness.

Introduction: Time management skills are necessary for professionals to accomplish their goals and succeed in their career. The recent changes in the educational environment that were caused by the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) could be stressful and might affect the structure of faculty work. Aim: To evaluate the stress level among university personnel during the COVID-19 outbreak and its relation to their time management skills. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional web-based survey was conducted on a sample of 56 university professionals. Each participant filled a google form questionnaire consisting of Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and Time Management Scale (TMS). The results were analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.0. Results: A total of 56 responses were received from full-time faculty and staff with 60% response rate. The overall PSS (mean±SD) was 15.29±7.13, indicating a low level of stress among the professionals. The mean TMS of 37.98±7.63 indicates an average time management skills. Significant negative correlation was found between PSS and TMS (r=-0.371, p=0.005). A positive correlation was found between TMS and years of experience (r=0.278, p=0.038). Both PSS and TMS had insignificant association with age, gender and years of experience. Conclusion: The stress level during the COVID-19 outbreak is relatively low among the University professionals. The TMS has a negative correlation with the PSS; however, it improves with the increase in years of job experience.
