Purpose This research explores the impact of mobile health (mHealth) technology and nurse health coaching on views of diabetes self-management (DSM) for persons living with diabetes. Methods Three focus groups (N = 24) were conducted with individuals living with type 2 diabetes who participated in a nurse health coaching and mHealth technology intervention study. Qualitative thematic analysis was used to identify overarching themes in each group. Results Major themes identified following intervention participation included enhanced perspectives about living with diabetes, increased awareness of how health behaviors influence DSM, improved support, and increased ownership of DSM. Conclusions The themes identified suggest that the mHealth technology and health coaching intervention together may have had an empowering effect on participants’ DSM. These results suggest that providing nurse health coaching with mHealth technology may help individuals ameliorate some of the challenges of living with and managing diabetes.

AbstractDelivering good quality mental health services remains a top priority in the English National Health Service (NHS). An approach to designing better delivery systems that takes into account the complexities of mental health services is highly desirable. This paper follows previous work that have sought to identify the key components of mental health delivery systems and explored the nature of the relationships between them. The paper presents the results of a qualitative thematic analysis of the requirements for diagrams as tools for describing and representing delivery systems in mental health.

Abstract. Background: The role of self-management of suicidality was investigated as part of a larger qualitative study of suicidality among people with experience of mental illness in New Zealand. Aims: To understand how people self-manage suicidality, why they self-manage, and the effects that self-management may have on suicidal thoughts and behavior. Method: Twenty seven people with experience of mental illness and suicidality were interviewed. A narrative thematic analysis was performed. Results: People had either drifted into self-management (while still using or instead of using mental health services) or chosen self-management because they were unhappy with mental health services, desired independence, or had difficulty accessing services. Self-management of suicidality included: using active ways to reduce, distract, and protect themselves from suicidal thoughts and feelings; practical ways of looking after themselves; reframing thoughts; getting to know themselves better; and peer support. Conclusion: Self-management of suicidality can encourage independence and resilience, a sense of citizenship, mutuality, and achievement.

BACKGROUND Mobile health services are gradually being introduced to support patients' self-management of chronic conditions. The success of these services is contingent upon patients' continuous use of them. OBJECTIVE This study aims to develop a model to measure the success of patients' continuous use of mobile health services for self-management of chronic conditions. METHODS The proposed model was derived from the Information Systems Continuance Model and Information Systems Success Model. The model contained seven theoretical constructs: information quality, system quality, service quality, perceived usefulness, user satisfaction, perceived health status, and continuous use intention. An online questionnaire survey instrument was developed to test the model. The survey was conducted to collect data from 129 patients who used a mobile health app for hypertension management from 2017 to 2019. The questionnaire items were derived from the validated instruments and were measured by a five-point Likert Scale. The partial least square modelling method was used to test the theoretical model. RESULTS The model accounted for 58.5% of the variance in perceived usefulness (R2=.585), 52.3% of the variance in user satisfaction (R2=.523), and 41.4% of the variance in patients' intention to make continuous use of mobile health services (R2=.414). The continuous use intention was significantly influenced by their perceived health status (β=.195, P=.034), the perceived usefulness (β=.307, P=.004) and user satisfaction (β=.254, P=.037) with the mobile health service. Information quality (β=.235, P=.005), system quality (β=.192, P=.022) and service quality (β=.494, P<.001) had a significant positive influence on perceived usefulness, but not on user satisfaction. Perceived usefulness had a significant positive influence on user satisfaction (β=.664, P<.001). In a result opposite to the original hypothesis, perceived health status did not negatively influence patients' intention to continue using the mobile health service but showed a significant, positive correlation. CONCLUSIONS This study developed a theoretical model to predict and explain patients' continuous use of mobile health services for self-management of chronic conditions and empirically tested the model. Perceived usefulness, user satisfaction and health status contributed to patients' intention to make continuous use of mobile health services for self-managing their chronic conditions.

Objectives of this study is to identify the real issues and challenges of flood related agencies in Malaysia. By using qualitative thematic analysis, this study found that limited authorities, lack of enforcement power, lack of cooperation among agencies, lack of man-power and assets for logistics, insufficient funding for flood risk management and communication problems are the issues faced by the flood-related agencies. BACKGROUND Mobile health (mHealth) systems have been shown to be useful in supporting self-management by promoting adherence to schedules and longitudinal health interventions, especially in people with disabilities (PwD). The Interactive Mobile Health and Rehabilitation (iMHere) System was developed to empower PwD and those with chronic conditions with supports needed for self-management and independent living. Since the first iteration of the iMHere 1.0 app, several studies have evaluated accessibility and usability of the system. Potential opportunities to improve and simplify the user interface (UI) were identified, and the iMHere modules were redesigned accordingly. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the usability of the redesigned modules within iMHere 1.0. METHODS This study evaluated the original and redesigned MyMeds and SkinCare modules. To assess the participants’ dexterity levels, the Purdue Pegboard Test (PPBT) was administered. Participants were then asked to perform a set of tasks using both the original and redesigned MyMeds and SkinCare modules to assess efficiency and effectiveness. Usability was measured using the Telehealth Usability Questionnaire (TUQ) to evaluate 10 new accessibility features that were added to the redesigned app. Participants were also asked which version they preferred. RESULTS Twenty-four participants with disabilities and varied degrees of dexterity impairments completed the entire study protocol. Participants displayed improved efficiency and effectiveness of use when using the redesigned modules, as compared to the original modules. Participants also reported improved usability and preferred the redesigned modules. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated that the iMHere System became more efficient, effective, and usable for individuals with dexterity impairments after redesigning it according to user-centered principles.

BACKGROUND The COVID-19 outbreak has affected the elderly's physical and mental health. The application of information and communication technology, such as mobile health (m-health), can play a significant role in combating this pandemic by changing the behavior and lifestyle of the elderly during this time of crisis. OBJECTIVE This systematic review aimed to synthesize m-health capabilities in providing health services to the elderly during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to identify the factors associated with the success of these tools. METHODS To find the relevant studies, a search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, ProQuest, and Google Scholar. The inclusion criteria were: studies in English that used m-health intervention in all aspects of elderly healthcare during the COVID-19 outbreak, published in peer-reviewed journals from 31 December 2019, and had any research design and methodology. Two authors independently took all the steps of this review, and finally performed narrative synthesis to report the findings. RESULTS Our initial search identified 421 studies, of which 10 met the inclusion criteria. The data analysis showed that all the m-health interventions had positive effects on the health of the elderly. The m-health services for the elderly during the current pandemic were used for therapy, information provision, self-help, monitoring, and mental health consultation purposes. The results also indicated that various factors affected the elderly's use of m-health tools. CONCLUSIONS The application of m-health keeps the elderly and healthcare providers safe, accelerates health service provision, reduces the costs of service delivery, and decreases the risk of morbidity and mortality during the COVID-19 outbreak. The successful use of m-health tools for the elderly in health programs during the current crisis greatly depends on supporting the elderly and overcoming the barriers.

Career choices of most pupils at the end of the primary school conform to gender norms. Only a few of them continue to study in a field traditionally considered appropriate for the opposite sex. The qualitative study presented here maps the reasons for such choices based on a sample of 25 female and 31 male students who study gender-atypical secondary school program for one to three years. The data were collected using a questionnaire with open-ended items and analysed using the qualitative thematic analysis. The results revealed that the reasons for school choices of boys and girls differ to certain extent. Their situation also differs with respect to the support they receive from their close ones and the acceptance by their classmates. The parents of girls disapproved of their choices more often than the parents of boys. Girls were also ridiculed more frequently by their peer groups.

AbstractPrevious studies have demonstrated that there is an increase in Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) during times of crisis (e.g., financial, environmental, or socio-political situations). The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered an unprecedented global health and financial tragedy, but research is yet to establish exactly how the situation may impact on IPV. The present study investigates victims’ experience of IPV during lockdown and the COVID-19 pandemic. We report a qualitative thematic analysis of 50 discussion forum posts written by victims of IPV. Of these, 48 forum posts were written by female victims of male perpetrated violence. All forum posts were obtained from the popular online platform, Reddit. We identified four themes associated with IPV victims’ experiences during lockdown and the global pandemic: (i) Use of COVID-19 by the Abuser, (ii) Service Disruption, (iii) Preparation to Leave, and (iv) Factors Increasing Abuse or Distress. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a substantial impact on those living with IPV, often increasing the severity of IPV experienced. The experiences of those affected by IPV during this period inform interventions and the guidance and support provided to IPV victims during times of crisis.
