PERFORMANCE OF SMALL CAPACITY SOLAR PUMP IN EASTERN REGION OF INDIA

Solar energy use for groundwater abstraction is one of the most viable options for smallholders’ irrigation in current scenario of increasing fuel prices. Therefore, the dissemination and adoption of solar pumps of low capacities among these farmers is in demand. In this paper a case study was in eastern region to assess the performance of 3horsepower solar pump, as this capacity pump is currently being promoted by the governments to small farmers at subsidised rates. In eastern region where groundwater regime in most of the area is ranging5-10 m bgl with annual fluctuation of ±2 to ±4 m, and abstracted groundwater by a 3 horsepower solar pumpis rangedfrom 100-173 m3/day, depending upon the months on a bright day. Thispump also offers a delivery pressure head 1.0- 1.5 kg/cm2, and therefore facilitates pressured irrigation for improved water use efficiency.

Groundwater abstraction to meet irrigation demand and application of water and energy efficient irrigation technologies is becoming a difficult affair due to significant energy poverty and pervasive electricity deficits in Eastern region of India. This undermines the production and productivity of small holders. This paper discusses the energy scarcity and possible remedy by the use of solar energy as this region receives abundance solar radiation due to its geographical location and 250 -300 bright sunny days per year which can be year round source of energy for agricultural use.

Due to the exhaustion of the fossile fuel reserves of the Earth, the increase of fossile fuel prices and the difficulties concerning stable fuel supply, the increase of electricity production from renewable energy sources has a special strategic importance. In this study, I am going to evaluate the circumstances of the production and use of renewable energy sources in Hungary and in the European Union. I present the Hungarian economic, energy policy-related and social circumstances which make it necessary to support renewable energy production. I am going to give an overview on the related EU strategies concerning the sector and the Hungarian development plan in this field. I pay particular attention to the examination of development opportunities and the R&D activities going on in this area in Hungary, as well as the efficiency of the means used to improve renewable energy use.

The Screening Tool for Energy Evaluation of Projects (STEEP) is designed to help improve energy use efficiency in water and wastewater treatment systems. This publication provides a detailed overview of STEEP and guides users on how to apply it during energy use assessments of proposed or existing water supply and wastewater systems. Since 2017, STEEP has been under continuous development based on pilot assessments carried out in various projects financed by the Asian Development Bank. STEEP is available online and can be downloaded for free.

Over the last three decades, a great investment effort has been made in the modernization of irrigation in the Valencian Community (Spain). The initial change from distribution networks to pressurized ones and the shift towards drip irrigation systems was followed by improvements in irrigation scheduling, based on agrometeorological data, soil water content sensors, and remote sensing. These improvements are considered adequate for increasing irrigation water use efficiency, but it is difficult to find systematic measurements to assess its impacts on irrigation adequacy along with irrigation productivity in fruit orchards. This work presents the results of a four year assessment of irrigation water and energy use efficiency along with water productivity of a recently established irrigation community in the province of Valencia (Spain). The study was carried out at the orchard level and focused on two fruit crops: persimmon and peach trees. Six irrigation performance indicators, relative water supply (RWS), relative irrigation supply (RIS), yield performance (Yp), global water productivity (WPoverall), output per unit irrigation water (OUI), and the percent of nitrogen fertilization obtained by irrigation water, were defined and calculated for years 2017 to 2020 in 104 persimmon and peach orchards. The results showed that most of the farmers irrigated below the crop water requirements, showing RWS and RIS values less than 1, and there was great variability among farmers, especially in WPoverall and OUI indicators.
