A benchmark survey was conducted through common questionnaires in order to collect the information pertaining to the existing crop-livestock production system, macro and micronutrients status in feed and fodder and feeding practices of cattle and buffaloes, farmers, family size, land holding, cropping pattern and irrigation facilities as well as livestock population, milk yield, feeding pattern and reproductive status of the animals. Landholding, livestock holding and family size were the main factors influencing the nutritional status of animals. Fifteen farmers under three major categories on land holding basis i.e. landless small (2-3 acres) and large (above 5 acres) from each village were selected. Cattle and buffaloes of the study area were found 17.89% anestrus and 28.52%, repeat breeding reproductive problems. Animals of surveyed area exhibited a deficiency in DM, DCP and TDN intake. Main crops cultivated during Kharif season are paddy, sorghum pigeon pea, maize, cowpea, etc. while during Rabi wheat, sugarcane, lentil chickpea, mustard berseem, etc. are the major crops. On-farm trails conducted on farmer’s dairy animals in the surveyed area on balance feeding with minerals mixture and regular de-worming. It was found that conception rate increased from 75 to 97.67%, milk yield increased 51.03%, benefit-cost ratio was found 1:1.46 and 1:1.71 in farmers practice and experimental balance feeding dairy animals.

Background: Maize is one of the predominant millets cultivated in an area of 6500 ha both under drip and open irrigation systems in Dharmapuri district. The infestation of invasive insect pest Spodoptera frugiperda poses major threat to maize cultivation and increased the cost towards plant protection since 2018. In the integrated pest management strategies, the benefits of growing border and inter crop has been studied in detail but least emphasis was given to the crops grown in adjacent fields to the main crop. The cropping pattern in Dharmapuri district is highly diversified and the farmers prefer to grow more number of crops across the seasons compared to other maize growing areas. Methods: The present survey envisages the influence of adjacent and border crops on the incidence of fall armyworm in maize. The field incidence of fall armyworm in maize crop surrounded by other crops such as tapioca, nerium, cotton and maize fields with blackgram, cowpea and sesame as border crops were studied during kharif season of 2018 and 2019. Result: The maize fields surrounded by tapioca and nerium crop recorded lower fall armyworm incidence (3.00 - 10.00%) followed by field surrounded by tapioca on either side of maize (4.50 - 14.50%) during 15 to 60 days after emergence. Growing of border crops such as blackgram, sesame and cowpea recorded 24.50, 23.50 and 16.50% incidence at 60 DAE, respectively. With regard to grain yield, no marked variation was observed in different crop combination. The higher return (Rs. 86040/ha) and benefit cost ratio (2.65) was observed in maize crop adjacent to tapioca and nerium crop. The lower net return (Rs. 75360/ha) and benefit cost ratio (2.36) was realized in maize crop adjacent to maize crop. In most of the management strategies pulses have been inducted either border or intercrop to attract natural enemies and thwart the host insects. In the present survey, tapioca and nerium crop combination reduces the fall armyworm incidence. Hence tapioca and nerium crop combinations can be tried as border crop to push the fall armyworm away from the maize crop. The days required for advanced planting and crop combinations should be studied in detail to devise effective fall armyworm management strategies.

The experiment was conducted at farmers’ field of On-Farm Research Division (OFRD), Bandarban during Rabi season of 2014-15 to find out suitable combination of hybrid maize and chilli intercropping system to increase system productivity and economic return. The experimental design was Randomized Complete Block (RCB) design with six dispersed replications. The maize var. BARI Hybrid Maize-9 and chilli (local) were used in the experiment. Two intercropping combinations viz., Maize single row (100 cm x 25 cm) + 2 rows chilli (50 cm x 40 cm) and Maize single row (150 cm x 25 cm) + 3 rows Chilli (50 cm x 40 cm) were evaluated against their sole crops. The highest gross return (Tk. 435040 ha-1), net return (Tk. 366290 ha-1) and benefit cost ratio (6.33) were recorded in maize single row (150 cm x 25cm) + 3 rows Chilli (50 cm x 40 cm) combination. Cob yield of hybrid maize and green fruit yield of Chilli were the highest in the respective sole crops. The results revealed that maize single row (150 cm x 25 cm) + 3 rows Chilli (50 cm x 40 cm) combination might be suitable and economically profitable for the hilly areas.Bangladesh Agron. The study was carried out at Multi Location Testing site, Sujanagar, Pabna during two consecutive years of 2011-12 and 2012-13 growing season to assess the performance of the pattern with newly released crop varieties against the existing one usually practiced by the farmers with traditional varieties in order to increase yield and economic return. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with six dispersed replications at farmer’s field. In improved pattern (IP) BARI Gom-26, BARI Til-4 and Binadhan-7 variety were used for wheat, sesame and T. aman rice, respectively. On the contrary in existing pattern (EP) farmers usually use BARI Gom-21, local (char shira) and Sharna cultivar for wheat, sesame and T. aman rice, respectively. The mean yield was recorded 4.66, 1.34 and 4.79 t ha-1 from wheat (BARI Gom-26), sesame (BARI Til-4) and T. aman (Binadhan-7) respectively from the improved cropping pattern whereas average yield 3.81, 0.98 and 4.58 t ha-1 was obtained from wheat (BARI Gom-21), sesame (local) and T. aman (Sharna), respectively from the existing pattern. Two years mean data also showed that improved pattern provided about 18% higher REY compared to existing pattern. Sustainable yield index and production efficiency were also found maximum with improved cropping pattern. Similarly, maximum gross margin and benefit cost ratio were obtained from improved cropping pattern. Bangladesh Agron. J. 2018, 21(2): 13-18

On-farm research was conducted at Gouripur sub-district under Mymensingh district of Bangladesh during the boro (mid November-June) season in 2013-14 and 2014-15 to evaluate the performance of non-puddled rice cultivation with and without crop residue retention. The rice var. BRRI dhan28 was transplanted by two tillage practices viz., puddled conventional tillage (CT) and non-puddled strip tillage (ST) and at two levels of mustard residues, i.e., no residue (R0) and 50% residue (R50). The experiment was designed in a randomized complete block design with four replications. There were no significant yield differences between tillage practices and residue levels in 2013-14. But in the following year, ST yielded 9% more grain compared to CT leading to 22% higher BCR. Retention of 50% residue increased yield by 3% compared to no-residue, which contributed to 10% higher benefit-cost ratio (BCR). The ST combined with 50% residue retention yielded the highest grain yield (5.81 t ha-1) which contributed to produce the highest BCR (1.06).

A field trial on soil test based (STB) fertilizer doses was conducted during the year of 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 in Jashore region (AEZ-11) to find out the most suitable fertilizer doses for four crop based cropping pattern considering the agronomic feasibility and economic return of the system. The experiment consisted of eight different treatments viz. T1: 100% NPKSZnB (STB), T2: T1 + 25% N, T3: T1 + 25% NP, T4: T1 + 25% NK, T5:T1 + 25% PK, T6:T1 + 25% NPK, T7: 75% of T1, T8: Native fertility. Randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications was followed. Data revealed that seed yield of mustard was remarkably influenced by fertilizer treatments while grain yield of other components of the cropping system was not affected significantly by the treatments except control or native fertility. It was observed that 25% more NPK over 100% STB dose provided the highest yield of all the component crops. The highest rice equivalent yield (3.34 t ha-1) was recorded from T6 and the lowest (1.88 t ha-1) from T8 treatment. Maximum gross return (Tk. 420000/ha) and marginal benefit cost ratio (4.08) were also obtained from T6 treatment. So, 25% NPK+ 100% STB dose of fertilizer could be followed for productive and remunerative rice based cropping system Mustard-Boro-T. Aus-T.Aman in AEZ-11. Bangladesh Agron. J. 2021, 24(1): 109-117

A study was conducted during 2019-2020 in ICAR-KVK, Vamban, Pudukkottai district, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. The people are facing various health problems for high consumption of white sugar viz., obesity, diabetes, dementia, cardiovascular disease, macular degeneration, alzheimer’s disease, increased blood glucose level, kidney ailments, gout, heart problems, hyperactivity, cancer and cavities. Children who eat sweets containing sugar also suffer from health issues. Hence, we have developed cookies with natural sugars and sensory evaluated for the period of 30 days stored in poly ethylene pack at room temperature. The cookies were nutritious and convenient snack for all age groups. The present study was undertaken to develop different cookies with addition of palm sugar, jaggery, white sugar and to evaluate the sensory acceptability, shelf life and benefit cost ratio of cookies through on farm trial for entrepreneurship development programme.

Yield gap of chickpea will be minimized by implementation of suitable location specific agro techniques with timely and careful management. On farm cluster frontline demonstration (CFLD) on chickpea were conducted during rabi season of 2015-16 to 2017-18 in Buxar district of Bihar. CFLD was conducted in 20 ha area each with plot size of 0.40 ha (1 acre) with active participation of 50 farmers in two clusters. CFLD was conducted to popularize the demonstrated technology and quantifying the yield gap analysis in chickpea. Demonstrated technology under CFLD enhanced the plant growth and yield attributes. Seed yield of chickpea was recorded higher under CFDL (15.51 q/ha) compared to farmers practice (11.81 q/ha) which was 31.32% higher over farmers practice, 40.81% higher over district yield (11.04 q/ha) and 42.81% higher over state yield (10.86 q/ha). Technology gap was recorded 2.75, 2.50 and 2.20 q/ha in year 2015-16, 16-17 and 17-18, respectively. Extension gap was recorded 3.83, 4.05 and 3.20 q/ha during 2015-16, 16-17 and 17-18, respectively. Technology index was recorded 23.75, 22.50 and 21 % during 2015-16, 16-17 and 17-18, respectively. Average net return of Rs 45700 was recorded in demonstration and Rs 29497 in farmers practice. The net return under demonstration was 54.93 % higher over farmers practice. Average benefit cost ratio of 1.73 recorded with demonstration and 1.15 with farmer’s practice.

On Farm Testing (OFT) of Yard long bean variety Arka Mangla and Lola were conducted at KVK Ernakulum during 2014-15 with five farmers in area of one ha. The OFT were conducted with active participation of farmer's to disseminate improved technology of Yard long bean to achieve production potential. The improved technologies consisting the use of modern variety, seed treatment, balance fertilizer application and integrated pest management. On Farm Testing data were recorded with respect to green pods yield as compared to farmer's local practice. The results of suggested that improved technology recorded higher green pods yield 50.7 q/ha, 45.6 q/ha and 40.7 q/ha, in Arka Magala and Lola and Local variety, respectively. In addition to high in yield of Arka Mangla, lower values of technology gap, extension gap and index existed. The improved technology gave higher gross return, net return with higher benefit cost ratio Yard long bean as compare to farmer's practices.

The present study for performance evaluation newly developed varieties of CIM –Kranti and other varieties of menthol mint cultivation has been carried out at farmers’ field of central Uttar Pradesh. Mints are commonly used as the source of fragrance, flavor and pharmaceuticals industry. During the study period 2017-18, 100 farmers cultivating CIM-Kranti and other varieties have been selected from the region of central Uttar Pradesh. The primary data were collected from the selected farmer’s field on profitability comparison between CIM-Kranti and other varieties under cultivation. The highest area and production has been observed during 2012 and 2013. Simple statistical tools and techniques have been used for data analysis of the cost of cultivation and profitability. It has been observed during the study that CIM-Kranti gives higher returns (.98491/- ha/year) over other varieties (.70977/-ha/year). However, the input cost of CIM-Kranti is higher than other varieties of the crop but the net return of CIM-Kranti was more profitable than other varieties. The benefit cost ratio has been observed 1.45 and 1.74 of other varieties and CIM-Kranti respectively. The new variety “CIM-Kranti” of menthol mint is cold and frost tolerant and has the potential to produce 10-15% more oil i.e. 145-160 kg/ha in summer season as compared to all other popular commercial cultivars of menthol mint.It is suggested from the study that maximum profit is generated through CIM-Kranti cultivation followed by other varieties crop.

A field experiment was conducted at ICAR-KVK, Kalaburgi, during Kharif seasons of 2018-19 and 2019-20 to adjudge the efficacy of pre and post emergence herbicides against diverse weed flora in pigeonpea ecosystem. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with 11 treatments comprising of different pre-emergent herbicides viz., Pendimethalin, Pendimethalin 30 EC + Imazethapyr 2 EC and post-emergence premix product herbicides such as Imazamox 35 WG + Imazethapyr 35 WG, Propaquizafop 2.5% + Imazethapyr 3.75%w/w ME  and their different dosages with cultural methods were compared with weed free check and weedy check treatments. Among the different pre and post emeregent herbicides tested against different weed flora,  post emergent application of Propaquizafop 2.5% + Imazethapyr 3.75% w/w ME @ 2000 ml ha-1 at 20-25 days recorded significantly lower weed density, weed dry weight, highest weed control efficiency (91.36%) and lowest weed index (8.78%) and higher grain yield (1209 kg ha-1 ),  net returns (` 43,036 ha-1) and benefit cost ratio (2.35) followed by Propaquizafop 2.5% + Imazethapyr 3.75% w/w  ME @ 1500 ml ha-1 at 20-25 DAS, Imazamox 35 WG + Imazethapyr 35 WG at 100 g ha-1 at 20-25 DAS and HW at 20 and IC 40 and 60 DAS.
