Perspectives on the L2 Phrasicon

This is the first book to investigate the field of phraseology from a learner corpus perspective. It includes cutting-edge studies which analyse a wide range of multiword units and extensive learner corpus data to provide the reader with a comprehensive theoretical, methodological and applied perspective onto L2 use in a wide range of situations.

One of the weaknesses of most current academic word lists is that they fail to do justice to the large stock of multiword units that are typical of academic language. The objective of this chapter is to raise awareness of the importance of phrasal academic vocabulary. After a brief critical survey of three recently compiled phrasal academic lists, the chapter highlights the potential contribution of learner corpus data to identifying the most useful units for teaching purposes. The approach is illustrated with a case study of phrasal metadiscourse based on corpora of novice and expert native writing, and subcorpora from the International Corpus of Learner English representing L2 writers from six different mother tongue backgrounds.

The world’s mediterranean-type climate regions (including areas within the Mediterranean, South Africa, Australia, California, and Chile) have long been of interest to biologists by virtue of their extraordinary biodiversity and the appearance of evolutionary convergence between these disparate regions. Comparisons between mediterranean-type climate regions have provided important insights into questions at the cutting edge of ecological, ecophysiological and evolutionary research. These regions, dominated by evergreen shrubland communities, contain many rare and endemic species. Their mild climate makes them appealing places to live and visit and this has resulted in numerous threats to the species and communities that occupy them. Threats include a wide range of factors such as habitat loss due to development and agriculture, disturbance, invasive species, and climate change. As a result, they continue to attract far more attention than their limited geographic area might suggest. This book provides a concise but comprehensive introduction to mediterranean-type ecosystems. As with other books in the Biology of Habitats Series, the emphasis in this book is on the organisms that dominate these regions although their management, conservation, and restoration are also considered.

Purpose This paper aims to propose and evaluate a pedagogically sound and innovative strategy to teach a higher education course that prepares future professionals to intelligently use information and communication technologies (ICTs) in their personal and professional lives. Design/methodology/approach The conceptual framework used for the design of the course was the socio-constructivism and activity theories. The implementation of the course was evaluated using the intrinsic case study methodology by including several instruments. Findings The pedagogical strategy proposed proved to be sound, as the evaluation showed that students were able to describe, use and propose innovative uses of a wide range of cutting-edge technologies in their both everyday lives and professional settings; they also had the skills to analyse the opportunities and challenges that these presented. Moreover, students liked this innovative way of learning and ended with a positive attitude towards ICT. Originality/value Although several courses prepare students to be digital citizens or use ICT to enhance the teaching-learning process, millennials are ill prepared to use cutting-edge technologies in an innovative, responsible and critical way in their future professions. The course that was designed is original in that it goes beyond preparing digital citizens to prepare professionals in any domain to use ICT in an informed and responsible way. Moreover, it is a documented, successful example of an undergraduate universal course in a highly important current society dimension. The authors believe that its pedagogical proposal could be transferred to courses dealing with other global issues such as the environment, economy and peace.

AbstractWe present an Integrated Contrastive Model of non-numerical quantificational NPs (NNQs, i.e. ‘some people’) produced by L1 English speakers and Mandarin and Korean L2 English learners. Learner corpus data was sourced from the ICNALE (Ishikawa, 2011, 2013) across four L2 proficiency levels. An average 10% of L2 NNQs were specific to L2 varieties, including noun number mismatches (*‘many child’), omitting obligatory quantifiers after adverbs (*‘almost people’), adding unnecessary particles (*‘all of people’) and non-L1 English-like quantifier/noun agreement (*‘many water’). Significantly fewer ‘openclass’ NNQs (e.g a number of people) are produced by L2 learners, preferring ‘closed-class’ single lexical quantifiers (following L1-like use). While such production is predictable via L1 transfer, Korean L2 English learners produced significantly more L2-like NNQs at each proficiency level, which was not entirely predictable under a transfer account. We thus consider whether positive transfer of other linguistic forms (i.e. definiteness marking) aids the learnability of other L2 forms (i.e. expression of quantification).

Localization is increasingly making its way into translation training programs at university level. However, there is still a scarce amount of empirical research addressing issues such as defining localization in relation to translation, what localization competence entails or how to best incorporate intercultural differences between digital genres, text types and conventions, among other aspects. In this paper, we propose a foundation for the study of localization competence based upon previous research on translation competence. This project was developed following an empirical corpus-based contrastive study of student translations (learner corpus), combined with data from a comparable corpus made up of an original Spanish corpus and a Spanish localized corpus. The objective of the study is to identify differences in production between digital texts localized by students and professionals on the one hand, and original texts on the other. This contrastive study allows us to gain insight into how localization competence interrelates with the superordinate concept of translation competence, thus shedding light on which aspects need to be addressed during localization training in university translation programs.

A novel design of a universal form tool is presented for machining complex planar and axisymmetric surfaces. The geometric and kinematic flexibility (GKF) of this tool type means that it can machine a wide range of profiles using a single setup. The operating principle of this multi-insert tool is its combination of single cutting edges, each of which form the individual details of the machined surface. The structure and application of both turning and milling multi-insert tools with combinations of single edges are described in the paper. Complex shapes and forms can be machined by changing the cutting-edge positions. The number of combinations of a given tool set can be determined by using the relations detailed in this study. Both turning and milling tools are utilized in a unique tool holder that clamps the inserts into position and allows their adjustment that is facilitated by special prepared analytical software to the desired object profiles. It is possible to use these tools in machining both wood and aluminum alloys. Finally, the design of the multi-insert tools for turning and milling and its functional features were experimentally verified with positive results.

In Selkup, converbs and converbal constructions are extensively used in a wide range of different syntactic functions. However, the corpus data show significant differences regarding the frequency within the individual Selkup dialectal groups (Northern, Central and Southern). In Southern Selkup, converbal constructions occur more than three times more frequently than in Central and Northern Selkup. This southnorth divide can also be observed concerning some functions, especially complex predicates. The question arises why there is such a large difference in the frequency and which strategies Central and Northern Selkup use to express Southern Selkup converbal constructions. Kokkuvõte. Anja Behnke: Konverbitarindid sölkupi keeles. Sölkupi keeles kasutatakse konverbe ja konverbitarindeid laialdaselt paljudes erinevates süntaktilistes funktsioonides. Siiski näitavad korpuseandmed märkimis väärseid esinemissageduse erinevusi sölkupi murrete lõikes (põhja-, kesk- ja lõunasölkupi). Lõuna-sölkupi murdes esinevad konverbitarindid enam kui kolm korda sagedamini kui kesk- ja põhja-sölkupi murretes. Sarnast põhja-lõuna vastandust on näha ka mõningate nende funktsioonide puhul, eriti liitpredikaatide puhul. Tekib küsimus, millest on selline esinemissageduste erinevus tingitud ja millised strateegiad vastavad kesk- ja põhja-sölkupi murretes lõunasölkupi konverbitarinditele. Аннотация. Аня Бенке: Деепричастные конструкции в селькупском языке. В селькупском языке деепричастия и деепричастные конструкции широко используются в самых разных синтаксических позициях. Однако корпусные данные показывают значительные различия в частотности их употребления в разных диалектных группах (северной, центральной и южной). В южноселькупском конструкции с деепричастиями встречаются более чем в три раза чаще, чем в центральном и северном. Такое же разделение между севером и югом можно наблюдать и на примере некоторых функций, в особенности сложных предикатов. В этой связи возникают вопросы о причинах такой разницы в частотности и о том, какие стратегии используются в северном и центральном селькупском для выражения значений, которые в южноселькупском выражаются конструкциями с деепричастиями.

This chapter describes Irving Fine’s Mutability. This cycle is distinctive and powerful, with striking musical and verbal images. The musical style can be described as neoclassical with elements of serialism, yet there is great flexibility and variety within the strict compositional procedures. The singer will need to command a wide range of colours and dynamics, as well as rapid articulation. A high standard of musicianship is also expected, especially for pitching some difficult intervals. A voice with a cutting edge will sound well here. Darker, fuller tones, verging on a contralto-like quality, will enhance lower-lying passages. However, the singer must always be able to move around nimbly, producing a clear tone over the whole range. The pianist will also have a good time getting to grips with an exciting part.

Abstract As large-scale learner corpora become increasingly available, it is vital that natural language processing (NLP) technology is developed to provide rich linguistic annotations necessary for second language (L2) research. We present a system for automatically analyzing subcategorization frames (SCFs) for learner English. SCFs link lexis with morphosyntax, shedding light on the interplay between lexical and structural information in learner language. Meanwhile, SCFs are crucial to the study of a wide range of phenomena including individual verbs, verb classes and varying syntactic structures. To illustrate the usefulness of our system for learner corpus research and second language acquisition (SLA), we investigate how L2 learners diversify their use of SCFs in text and how this diversity changes with L2 proficiency.
