Abstract Objective: to compare COVID-19 patients’ vessel caliber with that of normal lungs and lungs interested by other inflammatory and thromboembolic processes. Methods: between March and April 2020, 42 patients affected by COVID-19 pneumonia [COV-P] underwent a CT scan of the lung at Verona University Hospital for clinical indications. Lung images were compared to 4 different groups of patients (normal lung [NL], distal thromboembolism [DTE], bacterial and fungal pneumonia [Bact-P, Fung-P]) by a 4-year-experienced radiologist. Results: COV-P patients’ segmental and subsegmental vessels, as evaluated as the ratio with the corresponding bronchial branch (V/B ratio) were larger with respect to NL, DTE in the apparently healthy parenchyma, a result confirmed in the zones of opacification with respect to Bact-P and Fung-P. Conclusions: This is the first study to comparatively showing that segmental and subsegmental COVID-19 patients’ vessel caliber is significantly enlarged. This is a distinctive feature of COVID-19 pneumonia suggesting distinct pathophysiology as compared to other inflammatory and thromboembolic diseases and alerting radiologists to consider it when evaluating CT scan of suspected patients.

Recently, the functional aspect as well as morphological aspect of the reserve cells in the cervix uteri drew much attention in view of the carcinogenesis in squamocolumunar junction. In this communication, the authors elucidate the ultrastructural features of the reserve cells in patients of various age groups visiting our university hospital and affiliated hospital.From conventional light microscopic point of view, the reserve cells tend to be pronounced in various pathological conditions, such as the persisting inflammation, proliferative disorders and irritation of hormones. The morphological patterns of the reserve cells from various stage and degree of irritation were observed.

Background: Haemostatic puncture closure devices for rapid and effective hemostasis after arterial catheterisation are a comfortable alternative to manual compression. Implanting a collagen plug against the vessel wall may become responsible for other kind of vascular injuries i.e. thrombotic or stenotic lesions and peripheral embolisation. The aim of this paper is to report our clinically relevant vascular complications after Angio-Seal® and to discuss the results in the light of the current literature. Patients and methods: We report the symptomatic vascular complications in 17 of 7376 patients undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic catheterisation between May 2000 and March 2003 at the University Hospital Basel. Results: Most patients presented with ischaemic symptoms, arterial stenoses or occlusions and thrombotic lesions (n = 14), whereas pseudoaneurysms were extremely rare (n = 3). Most patients with ischaemic lesions underwent vascular surgery and all patients with a pseudoaneurysm were successfully treated by ultrasound-guided compression. Conclusions: Severe vascular complications after Angio-Seal® are rare, consistent with the current literature. There may be a shift from pseudoaneurysms to ischaemic lesions.
