Commodity formulations contain many chemically distinct components and their mutual interactions define the beneficial characteristics of the formulation. Mixing oppositely charged polymers and surfactants invariably induces macroscopic phase separation, to a degree dependent on the prevailing polymer and surface charge densities, and the interaction can be modulated by added ionic surfactants. Here, it is shown that a general universality exists between the charge present on a series of cationic-modified cellulose polymers—the charge being controlled either by the degree of cationic modification of the polymer itself or through the subsequent level of anionic surfactant binding—and its capacity to remove anionic colloidal material from solution, be that silica particles or polystyrene-butadiene lattices. Particulate material not removed from solution bears no adsorbed polymer, i.e., the particle surface is bare. Addition of nonionic surfactant does not negate this universality, implying that the nonionic surfactant is largely a spectator molecule or structure (micelle) in these systems, and that the dominant force is an electrostatic one.

SummaryA technique for harvesting mesothelial cells is described. This entails collagenase digestion of omentum after which the cells can be cultured. The technique has been developed using the rat, but has also been successfully applied to human tissue. Cultured rat mesothelial cells obtained in this way have been examined by scanning electron microscopy. Rat mesothelial cells grown on plastic film have been exposed to blood in an in vitro system using a Baumgartner chamber and have been demonstrated to support blood flow. No adhering platelets were observed on the mesothelial cell surface. Fibroblasts similarily exposed to blood as a control were washed off the plastic.

This article presents the results of a technology of placing a plastic film in the space between cotton rows. We have studied physical and mechanical properties of soil before placing the film. We have proved that the plastic film in the spaces between the cotton rows retains moisture in the soil much longer and it is possible to obtain up to 22 kg/ha of raw cotton in the condition of water scarcity in the Karakalpakstan.

Extraction of rare earth metals from lithium trichloroacetate solutions ( 1.20-2.88 mol l-1) with solutions of the commercial nonionic surfactant Slovafol 909 (p-nonylphenylnonaethylene glycol) in chloroform and dichloromethane was investigated. The extraction constants as well as the Slovafol 909 distribution constants were determined in the water-dichloromethane and water-chloroform systems. The lanthanide distribution ratios decrease with their atomic numbers first rather rapidly (approximately to Sm): the separation factor αSmLa = 1.54 and 1.87 in dichloromethane and in chloroform, respectively; for lanthanides with higher atomic numbers the drop is less pronounced (αLuLa = 2.42 and 2.85 in the two solvents, respectively).
