R&D activities and some development are performed at CEA on the brittle crack propagation and arrest. Phenomena occurring after the initiation of a brittle crack are not yet well understood. Absence of model able to predict the rapid growth of a brittle crack motivates this study. Due to the rapid growth of the crack, inertial effects and dynamic fracture should be considered. Assumption of a linear elastic solid are often preferred, but when plasticity of the material become non negligible (which is the case in the vicinity of the transition zone), these models become more limited. That’s why the paper presented here deals with dynamic crack propagation in elastic-viscoplastic material and aims at proposing a model able to predict the brittle crack propagation and arrest. To this end, experimental work is carried out for different geometries made of french RPV ferritic steel. Compact Tension specimens with different thickness, isothermal rings under compression with different positions of the initial defect to study also a mixed mode configuration. The test conditions and mains results (crack initiation, crack velocity measurements, ...) are collected and presented in a first part of the paper. To model efficiently the crack propagation in the Finite Element calculation, the eXtended Finite Element Method (X-FEM) implemented in the CEA F.E. software CAST3M is described in the second part of the paper. Thanks to this numerical technique, the crack path does not need to follow the element edges and the crack progress is directly incorporated in the degrees of freedom of the elements crossed by the crack. A two-steps methodology is presented in the third and fourth parts of this paper. The first step consider only the CT specimen, experimental crack speed evolution with time is imposed in numerical simulations. Energy terms and stress field at the crack tip are evaluated and discussed to build up a criterion. Then, the criterion identified on CT specimen is used in a second step as a predictive model to simulate crack propagation for each geometry studied (CT, ring in both mode I and mixed mode). In particular, crack propagation models based on the stress field evaluated at the crack tip and on a critical cleavage stress dependent on the strain rate, exhibit very good agreement with experimental data in term of crack speed, crack path and crack length at arrest. The mixed mode case is discussed in detail because to be pertinent, a model of brittle crack propagation should not only give the crack speed, but also its preferred direction of evolution.

AbstractFatigue tests were carried out on compression mouldings supplied by a leading polymer manufacturer. They were made from three batches of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) with weight-average relative molar masses, ${\overline{M}}_{\mathrm{W}}$, of about 0.6 × 106, 5 × 106 and 9 × 106. In 10 mm thick compact tension specimens, crack propagation was so erratic that it was impossible to follow standard procedure, where crack-tip stress intensity amplitude, ΔK, is raised incrementally, and the resulting crack propagation rate, da/dN, increases, following the Paris equation, where a is crack length and N is number of cycles. Instead, most of the tests were conducted at fixed high values of ΔK. Typically, da/dN then started at a high level, but decreased irregularly during the test. Micrographs of fracture surfaces showed that crack propagation was sporadic in these specimens. In one test, at ΔK = 2.3 MPa m0.5, there were crack-arrest marks at intervals Δa of about 2 μm, while the number of cycles between individual growth steps increased from 1 to more than 1000 and the fracture surface showed increasing evidence of plastic deformation. It is concluded that sporadic crack propagation was caused by energy-dissipating crazing, which was initiated close to the crack tip under plane strain conditions in mouldings that were not fully consolidated. By contrast, fatigue crack propagation in 4 mm thick specimens followed the Paris equation approximately. The results from all four reports on this project are reviewed, and the possibility of using fatigue testing as a quality assurance procedure for melt-processed UHMWPE is discussed.

The ductile crack propagation behavior of pressure equipment has always been the focus of structural integrity assessment. It is very important to find an effective three-dimensional (3D) damage model, which overcomes the geometric discontinuity and crack tip singularity caused by cracking. The cohesive force model (CZM), which is combined with the extended finite element method (XFEM), can solve element self-reconfiguration near the crack tip and track the crack direction. Based on the theory of void nucleation, growth and coalescence, the Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) damage model is used to study the fracture behavior of metallic materials, and agrees well with the experimental results. Two 3D crack propagation models are used to compare crack propagation behavior of pipe steel from the crack tip shape, fracture critical value of CTOA and CTOD, constraint effect, calculation accuracy, efficiency and mesh dependence etc. The results show that the GTN model has excellent applicability in the analysis of crack tip CTOD/CTOA, constraint effect, tunneling crack and so on, and its accuracy is high. However, the mesh of crack growth region needs to be extremely refined, and the element size is required to be 0.1–0.3mm and the calculation amount is large. The CZM model combined with XFEM has the advantages of high computational efficiency and free crack growth path, and the advantages are obvious in simulating the shear crack, combination crack and fatigue crack propagation. But, the crack tip shape and thickness effect of ductile tearing specimen can not be simulated, and the CTOA value of local crack tip is not accurate.

Significant stiffness reduction of the plate spring due to delaminations around the interwoven cloths could be prevented by using CFRTP (carbon fiber cloth and Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET)) rather than that by using CFRP (carbon fiber cloth and epoxy), when ultra high cyclic loading was applied to the plate spring under high humidity condition. To explain the result, the prediction model of stiffness reduction was introduced considering time-dependent crack propagation accompanying with creep deformation around the crack tip. Stiffness reduction of CFRP under high humidity condition was not only determined by cyclic crack propagation but also by time-dependent crack propagation accompanying with creep deformation around the crack tip. It was found that CFRTP was effective material of the plate springs on vibration conveyer for the uses under high humidity condition to prevent significant stiffness reduction, where the crack propagation accompanying with creep deformation should be prevented around the crack tip.
