This paper presents the results of a comprehensive trial application of the draft structural design criteria for highly irradiated core components to a typical blanket assembly duct. The development of the criteria (proposed RDT F 9-7) is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. The activity focuses on the evaluation of the criteria using a typical breeder reactor blanket assembly as a test case and is not intended for judging the adequacy of the component design. Pertinent design rules from the draft criteria are applied to the component to determine: (a) difficulties, if any, that may arise in interpretation and application of the criteria, and (b) adequacy of the criteria rules and analysis methods to address various potential failure mechanisms expected in the reactor core during service. Based on the trial application, various recommendations are made to promote further development of the criteria.

The compression packer rubber is one of the core components of the packer. According to the sealing mechanism of the compression packers rubber, the deformation of rubber between the central tube and casing tube is analyzed in the initial and working stages. The compression rubber is also strained radially against the support ring by means of a controlled tubular expansion process. In this paper, the theoretical model for the deformation analysis is established by the structure and working characteristics of rubber tube. In addition, the nonlinear relationship between the material, geometry and stress in the constrained and stable deformation stages is analyzed by application of pressure methods. The analytical results show the contact pressure and shear stress distribution on the sealing surface of the rubber and the effect of rubber geometry and its material properties on sealing performance in terms of maximum sealing pressure. Then, the criterion of sealing performance evaluation of the rubber is established by the numerical results. This analytical model will provide a theoretical basis and guidance for the structural design of the compression packer rubber and it will be of great significance to improve the sealing performance and reliability of packer rubber.

The minimum weight approach to structural design was introduced by F. R. Shanley with reference to narrow and wide columns and shells subjected to bending, and was later dealt with more comprehensively in a book by the same author. This was further extended to structures like tapered round thin-walled columns and frames. In this paper expressions giving optimum sectional dimensions for long thin walled cells of circular, semi–circular, rectangular and triangular shapes and uniform wall thickness have been derived. The design criteria used to obtain the minimum necessary conditions are (1) failure by local buckling and (2) a limit on the twisting deformation of the cells. Working curves from which the optimum sectional dimensions can be read for given torque and limiting twist have been plotted. And finally, a method of approach to the problem of combined bending and torsion has also been indicated.

Recent vibration problems with floors used for aerobics have shown the need for better guidelines for structural design and evaluation. Such guidelines were introduced for the first time in the Supplement to the 1985 National Building Code (NBC), but more recent experience with one particular floor has shown the need for some improvements to these guidelines. The paper describes the investigation of the floor and the use of the floor to estimate the loading function for aerobics, and recommends changes to the NBC design criteria. The paper provides guidance on estimating parameters used in the criteria and discusses repair alternatives related to the floor problem. Stress-strain relationships for a single layer are used to obtain the stress distribution in a laminate composed of any number of orthotropic layers subjected to axial and shear stresses. The mathematical procedure is simplified for an isotropic laminate. An interaction equation is presented to predict failure of a laminate. Optimum structural design criteria are obtained by considering different combinations of layer orientations.
