In water treatment, virus removal using ultrafiltration is a major step towards better water quality. In this paper, we study virus filtration efficiency using surrogate virus particles and via statistical surface-response approach. We focus on the effect of particle size (20–100 nm range) as a key factor along with the effects of transmembrane pressure (20–60 kPa range) and feed flowrate (0.3–1.0 L/F;min range) on the filtration virus removal efficiency (LRV). The particle size is shown to impart a great deal of influence on surrogate particle removal. The effect of particle-to-pore-size ratio is reported for comparison of membrane molecular weight cut off (MWCO) performance. It was shown experimentally and through the developed empirical regression model that transmembrane pressure plays a major role in controlling the filtration efficiency along with flowrate. In the studied experimental range, higher LRV values are obtained at lower transmembrane pressure (20 kPa) and at higher feed flowrate (1 L/F;min). Further the effect on LRV of the interaction between transmembrane pressure and particle size seems to be more significant than that of the interaction of flowrate with particle size.

AbstractTo replace time-consuming chemical analysis, a procedure was developed for applying X-ray fluorescence to the analysis of a manganese ore. This X-ray fluorescence method is rapid; the total time for both sample preparation and analysis is ½ hr. The method is also simple enough for routine laboratory use. The components determined, the concentration ranges, and the agreement between chemical and X-ray analysis in terms of standard deviation are:The agreements between chemical and X-ray analysis noted for manganese and iron are obtained by correcting for CaO concentration when determining the manganese and for manganese and SiO2 concentrations when determining the iron. The corrections employ empirical equations developed by a multiple regression technique.Sample preparation is reduced to a minimum because it consists of only two steps, pulverization of the manganese ore followed by briquet ring. Four minutes of grinding with Boraxo as the grinding aid gives sufficient uniformity to minimize the effect of particle size variation. The ground mix of manganese ore and Boraxo is pressed into 1.25-in. briquettes for analysis.

This work aims to investigate the effect of recycled material and effect of particle size on the mechanical properties of the recycled material. Tested material is polyamide 6. Every manufacture of any plastic parts produces certain amount of waste, such as defective injects or cold runner system from injection molding technology. When size of this material is reduced, particles of different sizes are made. From large particles similar to the original granulate material, to dust particles. This size variation can cause problems during subsequent processing. These particles of different size have distinct melting rate. To determine behavior of recycled material at room temperature. Impact toughness and hardness tests are performed.
