The performance of a solvent extraction plant both with respect to throughput and product purity can be improved by operating the plant in such a manner as to leave no chemically uncombined solvent in the process. The feedstocks of most solvent extraction plants are of a fairly constant composition for relatively long periods of time, thus optimisation of flowsheets and operating conditions can be carried out off line and simple conventional controllers can be used for plant control.
