A fundamental diagram consists of a scatter of traffic flow data sampled at a specific location and aggregated from vehicle trajectories. These trajectories, if presented equivalently, constitute a microscopic version of the (conventional) fundamental diagram. The cross-reference between vehicle trajectories and the microscopic fundamental diagram provides details of vehicle motion dynamics which allow causal-effect analysis on some traffic phenomena and further reveal the microscopic basis of the conventional fundamental diagram. This observation inspires theoretical modeling by a microscopic approach to address traffic phenomena and the conventional fundamental diagram. Derived from the field theory of traffic flow, the longitudinal control model is capable of serving the purpose without the modifications or exceptions used by other approaches.

Abstract Summary Searching for amino acid or nucleic acid sequences unique to one organism may be challenging depending on size of the available datasets. K-mer elimination by cross-reference (KEC) allows users to quickly and easily find unique sequences by providing target and non-target sequences. Due to its speed, it can be used for datasets of genomic size and can be run on desktop or laptop computers with modest specifications. Availability and implementation KEC is freely available for non-commercial purposes. The topic of Nuclear Safety Culture touches several different aspects with contributions from the main organizations involved in nuclear projects and belonging to vendors, utility and regulators. Two nuclear safety directives issued by the European Commission emphasize the fundamental principle of national responsibility for nuclear safety and are implemented in each member country’s legislation. An example of fission implementation is highlighted, referring to the Czech Republic legislation; an example of application in fusion technology is the implementation of the Nuclear Safety Culture in the ITER project, located in Cadarache, in the south of France. The aim of the paper is to highlight the importance of this field, pointing out the cross reference between fission and fusion technology as applied in two countries, with concrete experiences and future prospects for nuclear technologies.

In the summer of 1814 a group of young men who had known each other in the campaigns of the War of Liberation formed a literary circle in Berlin. They were Count von Kalckreuth, Count von Blankensee, and Wilhelm Hensel (later the celebrated painter who married Fanny Mendelssohn). They soon drew into their group two kindred spirits, Wilhelm von Studnitz and Wilhelm Müller. Müller was the youngest, but was recognized as having the choicest talents, and he became the leader of the group, which was held together by the strong bonds of personal friendship and a common love of poetry. In 1815 they published a volume of their united poems under the title “Bundesblüthen,” which contains the first fruits of Müller's gifts. A somewhat extended search through university libraries in Germany failed to disclose the book, and on going to Berlin I was disappointed that it was not entered among Müller's works in the catalogue of the Royal Library. One day while reading the book-titles under the numerous “Wilhelm Müllers” who occur in that catalogue, I found a cross-reference to the book among the works of quite a different individual. The volume is dated “Berlin 1816. In der Maurerschen Buchhandlung.” I later found another copy (preserving the original cover of blue paper) in the British Museum. Background: Head and neck (H&N) cancers account for about 5% of all malignant tumours. Pain is one of the most feared consequences of H&N neoplasms and is experienced by up to 80% of patients and worsens their quality of life inhibiting speaking, eating, drinking or swallowing. Nevertheless, pain is still often underestimated and undertreated. Objectives: The role of opioids in cancer pain has been well established but evidences about the role and the relative effectiveness of opioids such as fentanyl in the context of H&N cancer pain remains unclear. Methods: A literature review based on the guidance of the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination was conducted. An iterative approach was used starting with an electronic search in the MEDLINE database. The search terms ((‘Neoplasms’[Mesh]) AND ‘Head and Neck Neoplasms’[Mesh]) AND ‘Fentanyl’[Mesh] were used. Results: A total of 18 publications were found by the first performed search on PubMed. Other publications concordant with our aim were found by cross-reference. Considering inclusion and exclusion criteria for our review, eight papers resulted eligible for analysis. Conclusion: Fentanyl transdermal therapeutic system (TTS) seems to be an important option, thanks to the way of administration, the good safety and tolerability profiles to control baseline pain. For breakthrough cancer pain (BTcP), several formulations of transmucosal fentanyl are available. All the formulations seem to be active and safety but we lack head-to-head studies of fentanyl versus other strong opioids, as well as with different formulation of fentanyl, particularly for BTcP where H&N cancer population is very poorly represented.
