The multi-material design of modern car bodies requires joining technologies for dissimilar materials. Adhesive bonding in combination with self-piercing riveting is widely used for joining steel and aluminium structures. To guarantee crashworthiness and reliability of a car body, accurate and effcient numerical models of its materials and connections are required. Suitable component test setups are necessary for development and validation of such models. In this work, a novel test setup for adhesively bonded and point-wise connected components is presented. Here, load combinations comparable to a vehicle crash are introduced into the connections. The developed setup facilitates successive failure of multiple connections and enables a broad validation of numerical connection models.

A constitutive equation of the differential type is introduced to model the nonlinear viscoelastic response behavior of elastomeric bearings in large-scale system simulations for vibration assessment and component loads prediction. The model accounts for the nonlinear dependence of dynamic stiffness and damping on vibration amplitude commonly observed in the behavior of bearings made of particle-reinforced elastomers. A testing procedure for the identification of the model parameters from bearing component test data is described. The experimental and analytical results for predicting the behavior of four (4) different car bushings are presented. In an example application, the model is incorporated in an ADAMS simulation to study the dynamic behavior of a car rear suspension.

Erosion tests were conducted on 310 stainless steel in combustion gas atmospheres at 975°C. SiC particles of 100 mesh (150 μm) size were employed over a velocity range of 15–70 m/s at a 90 deg (perpendicular) angle of impingement. A comparison is made with results obtained at 25°C in air using the same test equipment. Scanning electron microscopy examination of the eroded surfaces revealed important information concerning the nature of the erosion-corrosion process. A multiple component test specimen is described for application in comparing alloys under nearly identical test conditions.
