Although process design optimization issues have received considerable attention from researchers for more than several decades, and a number of methodologies for modeling and optimizing the process have been developed, there is still ample room for improvement. Most research work has rarely considered the use of raw data from a manufacturing process database into the process design. However, the use of cumulative raw data can be a vital component in optimizing processes. To address this, we propose a new process design procedure called robust-Bayesian data mining (RBDM). First, we show how data mining techniques and a correlation-based feature selection (CBFS) method can be applied effectively to the selection of significant factors. Second, we then show how RBDM can be incorporated into robust design. Third, we present how the proposed RBDM estimates process parameters by considering the concept of robustness of the estimated parameters while incorporating the concept of noise factors. Finally, we present numerical examples to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed RBDM as a design tool for optimizing manufacturing processes.

In this chapter the focus is on business process design as middle point between requirement elicitation and implementation of a Web information system. We face both the problem of the notation to adopt in order to represent in a simple way the business process and the problem of a formal representation, in a machine-readable format, of the design. We adopt Semantic Web technology to represent process and we explain how this technology has been used to reach our goals.

Quality Function Deployment for Environment (QFDE) is an effective eco-design tool to transform the voices of customer and environment into the engineering metrics for evaluating product design. From the viewpoint of green manufacturing, machining process design is focused on by many manufacturers and it is necessary to evaluate its environmental impact. The QFDE method is developed to evaluate machining process design with the new house of quality. According to the evaluation, design engineers can identify which part characteristics and their machining processes should be focused on and then know how to improve the product design. A case of an engine is studied to illustrate the proposed method.

Modern, cost-effective pipelines are moving beyond the API X70-X80 limits of the 1990s. Over the last few years, more interest has been placed on the X100-120 grades because they are potentially more economical to build and operate. To reach the impressive properties required by these new grades, the proper combination of alloy and rolling process design must be implemented, along with highly controlled interrupted accelerated cooling and hot leveling. This paper discusses some of the underlying physical metallurgy that is required and points out areas where further research and development would be useful.
