When porcelain insulator operates in a harsh environment for a long time, it will cause leakage current increase, and lead to heating phenomenon. As a result, the temperature of porcelain insulator can be changed, which probably due to crack, breakdown or other factors. In order to reflect the working state of the porcelain insulator, to monitor the temperature of porcelain insulator, optical fiber Bragg grating temperature sensors are installed respectively on the steel cap and the porcelain of porcelain insulator. In the interaction of industrial frequency voltage test of 15kV, thus the temperature of porcelain insulator can be distributed. The temperature of the porcelain insulator affects the center wavelength of optical fiber Bragg grating temperature sensors, which are installed on porcelain insulator. The tests show that in the pure condition, the temperature of porcelain insulator's steel cap and porcelain respectively rise 1.4°C and 1.5°C, in the polluted condition, the temperature of porcelain insulator's steel cap and porcelain respectively rise 5.8°C and 6.3°C, in the pollution level II condition, the temperature of Porcelain insulator's steel cap and porcelain respectively rise 6.8°C and 7.2°C. Therefore, by using optical fiber Bragg grating temperature sensors to monitor the change of porcelain insulator's temperature, combined with the researches of temperature characteristics, can directly reflect the porcelain insulator's working situation and real-time online monitoring.

Abstract: Optical Fiber Sensor (OFS) has come quite considerable and famous in world of sensor technology where it has been used widely to detect for a changeable environment and responds to some output on other system such as in industrial, chemical analysis and monitoring. A Fiber Bragg Grating (Fiber Bragg Grating) is a kind of appropriated where the short fragment of optical fiber which certain and specific wavelength is reflected with light and the Bragg reflector started developed and transmits all others. The current project is concerned with the development characteristics and behaviors of strain and temperature sensors acting on Fiber Bragg Grating by a computer simulation. This study focuses on analyzing the performance of the characteristics and behavior of strain and temperature sensors acting on Fiber Bragg Grating. A strain sensor is used to measure strain on an object of which the resistance varies range with applied force. Meanwhile,for the temperature sensor is used to measure and detect any abnormality of temperature acting on Fiber Bragg Grating such as can lead into fire and accidents. This will found out on how Fiber Bragg Grating can demonstrate strain and temperature sensors. A simulation of the computer program (MATLAB) will be carried out to simulate due to the strain and temperature sensor of Fiber Bragg Grating. The paper reports the application of the distributed optical fiber sensing technology and the FBG sensing technology in bridge strain monitoring; the overall changeable characteristics of the whole structure can be obtained through the distributed optical fiber sensing technology (BOTDA), meanwhile the accurate information of local important parts of the structure can be obtained through the optical fiber Bragg grating sensor (FBG), which can improve the accuracy of the monitoring. FBG sensor has a high sensitivity, but it can only realize the measurement of local discrete points for the quasidistributed sensing. BOTDA can realize the long distance and distributed measurement, but its spatial resolution is not high. FBG and BOTDA were applied together in bridge monitoring in this test, taking full advantage of the distributed BOTDA on the overall strain measurements of the structure, as well as monitoring the key parts by the arrangement of FBG. The combined application of BOTDA and FBG can achieve the overall monitoring from point to line and then to the surface and, therefore, obtain more comprehensive information on the strain of the test structure.
