ABSTRACTCorrosion of thin film structures commonly used in electronic and magnetic devices is discussed. Typical failure modes are presented, and galvanic corrosion is discussed in some detail since it is one common problem with such devices. A graphical explanation for the determination of the ohmic potential drop during galvanic corrosion is presented. The corrosion problem of thin film disks is shown to have changed during the past ten years owing to changes in disk structure. The corrosion susceptibility of two antiferromagnetic alloys used for exchange coupling to soft magnetic layers is discussed.

The radiometric dating of calcrete is often problematical because impurities and open system conditions affect the apparent ages obtained. By applying both radiocarbon and uranium-series dating to calcrete in colluvium, it is shown that such conditions can be identified. In correlation with the stratigraphy, it is found that partial recrystallization severely decreases the radiocarbon ages of the upslope and shallower samples further down, whereas incorporation of limestone fragments from bedrock significantly increases the apparent ages of some of the uranium-series samples. It is concluded that the hillslope calcrete at the study site near Sede Beker in the Negev Desert, Israel, mainly developed shortly after 40 kyr ago, at a time when the Jordan Valley was being inundated to form the fossil Lake Lisan. Since their formation would have required higher rainfall than today, the results provide further evidence that the whole region was experiencing an increase in precipitation.

3-D optimal design of laminated yoke of billet heater for rolling wire rod using ON/OFF method The optimization method using the ON/OFF sensitivity analysis has an advantage that an epoch-making construction of magnetic circuit may be obtained. Therefore, it is attractive for designers of magnetic devices. We have already developed the ON/OFF method for the optimization of a static magnetic field problem, and the effectiveness is verified by applying it to the optimization of magnetic recording heads. In this paper, the ON/OFF sensitivity method is extended to the optimization of the eddy current problem using the adjoint variable. The newly developed ON/OFF method is applied to the determination of the optimal topology of the yoke of the billet heater for rolling wire rod. As a result, the optimal shape of yoke, which we could not imagine beforehand can be obtained. It is shown that the local heating of the yoke was reduced without decreasing the heating efficiency.

<div> <p>The synthesis of alloys with long range atomic scale ordering (ordered intermetallics) is an emerging field of nanochemistry. Ordered intermetallic nanoparticles are useful for a wide variety of applications such as catalysis, superconductors, and magnetic devices. However, the preparation of nanostructured ordered intermetallics is challenging in comparison to disordered alloys, hindering progress in materials development. We report a process for converting colloidally synthesized ordered intermetallic PdBi<sub>2</sub> to ordered intermetallic Pd<sub>3</sub>Bi nanoparticles under ambient conditions by an electrochemically induced phase transition. The low melting point of PdBi<sub>2</sub> corresponds to low vacancy formation energies which enables the facile removal of the Bi from the surface, while simultaneously enabling interdiffusion of the constituent atoms via a vacancy diffusion mechanism under ambient conditions. The resulting phase-converted ordered intermetallic Pd<sub>3</sub>Bi exhibits 11x and 3.5x higher mass activty and high methanol tolerance for the oxygen reduction reaction compared to Pt/C and Pd/C, respectively,which is the highest reported for a Pd-based catalyst, to the best of our knowledge. These results establish a key development in the synthesis of noble metal rich ordered intermetallic phases with high catalytic activity, and sets forth guidelines for the design of ordered intermetallic compounds under ambient conditions.</p> </div>

We report triple differential cross-sections (TDCSs) for the electron impact single ionization of tungsten atoms for the ionization taking place from the outer sub shells of tungsten atoms, viz. W (6s), W (5d), W (5p) and W (4f). The study of the electron-induced processes such as ionization, excitation, autoionization from tungsten and its charged states is strongly required to diagnose and model the fusion plasma in magnetic devices such as Tokamaks. Particularly, the cross-section data are important to understand the electron spectroscopy involved in the fusion plasma. In the present study, we report TDCS results for the ionization of W atoms at 200, 500 and 1000 eV projectile energy at different values of scattered electron angles. It was observed that the trends of TDCSs for W (5d) are significantly different from the trends of TDCSs for W (6s), W (5p) and W (4f). It was further observed that the TDCS for W atoms has sensitive dependence on value of momentum transfer and projectile energy.
