Marine energy devices harness power from attributes of ocean water to form a sustainable energy source. Knowledge gaps remain about whether marine energy systems can affect the environment, adding another threat to animal populations and habitats already under pressure from climate change and anthropogenic activities. To date, potential environmental effects have been studied under the scope of stressor–receptor interactions, where moving parts of, or emissions from, a system could harm the animals, habitats, and natural processes. While crucial for understanding effects and identifying knowledge gaps, this approach misses a holistic view of what animals may experience in the presence of marine energy systems. We look at six biological consequences and forces that drive the health of an animal population and the effects expected from marine energy development: success of early life stages; changes in competitive capabilities; growth and survival based on food availability; susceptibility to predators; injury or death; and reproductive success. We use case studies to develop this approach, focusing on a variety of marine animals. An approximate level of risk is assigned for each interaction based on the biological consequences. This work highlights the need to examine the effects of marine energy development on animal populations within their natural habitats.

Many parts of the world are increasingly faced with the pressure to accommodate activities of various, and at times, conflicting functions (Holmes, 2006; Lai et al., 2017; Woods 2012). Areas rich in natural resources are often not only conducive to the development of industrial activities, such as mining, energy development, and manufacturing. The natural and socio-economic landscapes they host may also be promoted as assets attractive to tourists seeking unique, authentic, and/or educational tourism experiences (Beer et al., 2017; de Sousa & Kastenholz, 2015; Frantál & Urbánková, 2017). Tourism has been commonly used as a tool to support economic development or regeneration in rural areas and industrial cities (Lane & Kastenholz, 2015; Petrzelka et al., 2006). When an area’s industrial activities are in decline and/or fall short in supporting its economy, tourism can provide a supplementary or alternative model to the existing industrial-based economy.

This paper explores what an ecological modernization perspective has to offer in an era marked by globalization. Globalization processes and dynamics are mostly seen as detrimental to the environment. The point that an ecological modernization perspective puts on the research agenda is that, although global capitalism has not been beaten and continues to show its devastating environmental effects in all corners of the world, we are moving beyond the era of a global treadmill of production that only further degrades the environment. More or less powerful, reflexive, countervailing powers are beginning to move towards environmental reform. And these powers are no longer limited to a small environmental movement that only reacts to the constant undermining of society's sustenance base. In analyzing these countervailing forces, the paper also explores the consequences of globalization processes for ecological modernization ideas and perspectives.

On August 31, 1803, a group of seven men, comprising the Commission for East Indies Affairs (Commissie tot de Oost-Indische Zaken), submitted the final report of its deliberations to the Government of the State of the Batavian Republic (Staatsbewind der Bataafsche Republiek) in The Hague. This Commission had been called into existence in November 1802 to make recommendations on how best to administer and conduct trade with the nation's possessions in the East Indies in a fashion that would render the greatest advantage to the nation's finances and profit to its commerce. Only a couple of years earlier Holland's monopolistic United East Indies Company (VOC) had been terminated by the Republic, and its assets and liabilities assumed by the State. The liabilities were immediately identifiable, for they consisted of debts which had to be paid in hard cash. The assets, on the other hand, consisted of territories – most of which had fallen under English control – and factories that somehow had to be made profitable, but seemed, given the then-existing conditions in the world, to be almost out of reach. The Commission was supposed to make recommendations as to how the remaining, territories of the VOC should be managed and how the trade with the East Indies and Asia in general was to be made profitable. This was no small task, so it may appear somewhat wondrous that the Commission was able to complete its work in less than ten months. The dispatch with which the Commission's work was completed, however, is more understandable if it is realised that the financial collapse of the VOC had been openly recognised since 1786, and various proposals for either reform or total change of the Company's system had been presented and discussed. These alternative proposals were well known to the members of the Commission. Their work, therefore, involved striking a balance among these proposals rather than creating a system de novo.

Oceanic wave power has drawn wide attention in the field of oceanic energy utilization around the world due to its giant reserves and clean renewable energy. The utilization technologies of wave power have tended to be mature, and are running into or near commercial exploitation level. This paper fully summarizes the basic principle of wave power utilization technologies, especially its multiple energy conversion system. The status of oceanic wave energy conversion technologies and main oceanic wave generating devices around the world are presented. Furthermore, the research and application progress of oceanic wave power generating technologies are illustrated in detail. After all, from the trends and broad prospects, the utilization of wave power is of great importance for the exploitation of oceanic resources in the littorals. It is also vital for the development of islands far away from continents, as well as essential for the combination wave energy and other marine energy resources.
