Abstract Many calculations for science or trade require the evaluation and propagation of measurement uncertainty. Although relative atomic masses (standard atomic weights) of elements in normal terrestrial materials and chemicals are widely used in science, the uncertainties associated with these values are not well understood. In this technical report, guidelines for the use of standard atomic weights are given. This use involves the derivation of a value and a standard uncertainty from a standard atomic weight, which is explained in accordance with the requirements of the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement. Both the use of standard atomic weights with the law of propagation of uncertainty and the Monte Carlo method are described. Furthermore, methods are provided for calculating uncertainties of relative molecular masses of substances and their mixtures. Methods are also outlined to compute material-specific atomic weights whose associated uncertainty may be smaller than the uncertainty associated with the standard atomic weights.

Abstract Standardized Runoff Index (SRI), as one of the well-known hydrological drought indices, may contain uncertainties caused by the employment of the distribution function, time scale, and record length of statistical data. In this study, the uncertainty in the SRI estimation of monthly discharge data of 30 and 49 year length from Minab dam watershed, south of Iran, was investigated. Four probability distribution functions (Gamma, Weibull, Lognormal, and Normal) were used to fit the cumulative discharge data at 3, 6. 9, 12, 24 and 48 month time scales, with their goodness-of-fit and normality evaluated by K-S and normality tests, respectively. Using Monte-Carlo sampling, 50,000 statistical data were generated for each event and each time scale, followed by 95% confidence interval. The width of the confidence interval was used as uncertainty and sources of uncertainty were investigated using miscellaneous factors. It was found that the maximum uncertainty was related to normal and lognormal distributions and the minimum uncertainty to gamma and Weibull distributions. Further, the increase in both time scale and record length led to the decrease in uncertainty.

The structure of the population of female and immature sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) in the region of the Galápagos Islands was studied using individual photographic identifications of 1285 animals collected between 1985 and 1989. Population parameters were estimated using a maximum-likelihood mark–recapture estimate permitting emigration from the study area in which identifications are collected and then reimmigration back into it. Because permanent associations among whales violated assumptions of independence, confidence intervals for the estimates were constructed using Monte-Carlo population simulation. The analysis suggested that there is a population of very approximately 200 whales in the study area around the islands at any time. These were part of a larger population numbering between 2600 and 5300 individuals (95% confidence interval). An average of 39–94% (95% confidence interval) of the whales left the study area in any month, with a similar number immigrating.
