The Standard Model

The well-known leptonic U(1) symmetry of the Standard Model (SM) of quarks and leptons is extended to include a number of new fermions and scalars. The resulting theory has an invisible QCD axion (thereby solving the strong CP problem), a candidate for weak-scale dark matter (DM), as well as radiative neutrino masses. A possible key connection is a color-triplet scalar, which may be produced and detected at the Large Hadron Collider.

Abstract There are indications that an asymptotically safe UV completion of the Standard Model with gravity could constrain the Higgs self-coupling, resulting in a prediction of the Higgs mass close to the vacuum stability bound in the Standard Model. The predicted value depends on the top quark mass and comes out somewhat higher than the experimental value if the current central value for the top quark mass is assumed. Beyond the Standard Model, the predicted value also depends on dark fields coupled through a Higgs portal. Here we study the Higgs self-coupling in a toy model of the Standard Model with quantum gravity that we extend by a dark scalar and fermion. Within the approximations used in [1], there is a single free parameter in the asymptotically safe dark sector, as a function of which the predicted (toy model) Higgs mass can be lowered due to mixing effects if the dark sector undergoes spontaneous symmetry breaking.

Abstract The Standard Model (SM), while extremely powerful as a description of the strong, electromagnetic and weak interactions, does not provide a natural candidate to explain Dark Matter (DM). Theoretical as well as experimental motivation exists for the existence of a hidden or dark sector of phenomena that couples either weakly or in a special way to SM fields. Hidden sector or dark sector states appear in many extensions to SM to provide a particular candidate DM in the universe or to explain astrophysical observations. If there is such a family of Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) particles and interactions, they may be accessible experimentally at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN and at future High Energy Colliders. In this paper, the main focus is given on selected searches conducted at LHC experiments related to Higgs Hidden-Dark Sector Physics. The current constraints and future prospects of these studies are summarized.

Evidence in support of a nonzero neutrino mass, through the phenomenon of oscillations, is steadily becoming more compelling. A pedagogic introduction to vacuum neutrino oscillations and resonant flavour conversion is presented in this paper, prefaced by a thumbnail sketch of the relevant properties of the neutrino as embodied in the Standard Model of particle physics. The recent results from solar and atmospheric neutrinos are summarised and their combined implications on neutrino properties are outlined. Some attempts to incorporate a nonzero neutrino mass in extensions of the Standard Model are briefly discussed.

We know that neutrino mass and mixing provide a window to physics beyond the Standard Model. Now this window is open, at least partly. And the questions are: what do we see, which kind of new physics, and how far "beyond"? I summarize the present knowledge of neutrino mass and mixing, and then formulate the main open questions. Following the bottom-up approach, properties of the neutrino mass matrix are considered. Then different possible ways to uncover the underlying physics are discussed. Some results along the line of seesaw, GUT and SUSY GUT are reviewed.

A mechanism for generating massive but naturally light Dirac neutrinos is proposed. It involves composite Higgs within the standard model as well as some new interaction beyond the standard model. According to this scenario, a neutrino mass of 0.1 eV or higher, signals new physics at energies of 10–100 TeV or lower.

During the last years several Dark Sector Models have been proposed in order to address striking and puzzling astrophysical observations which fail standard interpretations. In the minimal case a new vector particle, the so called dark photon or U-boson, is introduced, with small coupling with Standard Model particles. Also, the existence of a dark Higgs boson h’ is postulated, in analogy with the Standard Model, to give mass to the U-boson through the Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking mechanism. The discovery of such a Dark Force Mediator would belong to a new field of Physics Beyond the Standard Model. The KLOE experiment, working on the DAΦNE e+e− collider in Frascati, searched for the existence of the U-boson in a quite complete way, investigating several different processes and final states. Tight limits on the model parameters have been set at 90%CL. Further improvements are expected in terms of sensitivity and discovery potential with the new KLOE-2 detector working on the improved DAΦNE e+e− collider, which has collected more than 5 fb−1.

Abstract Solutions of the Strong CP Problem based on the spontaneous breaking of CP must feature a non-generic structure and simultaneously explain a coincidence between a priori unrelated CP-even and CP-odd mass scales. We show that these properties can emerge from gauge invariance and a CP-conserving, but otherwise generic, physics at the Planck scale. In our scenarios no fundamental scalar is introduced beyond the Standard Model Higgs doublet, and CP is broken at naturally small scales by a confining non-abelian dynamics. This approach is remarkably predictive: robustness against uncontrollable UV corrections to the QCD topological angle requires one or more families of vector-like quarks below a few 10’s of TeV, hence potentially accessible at colliders. Because CP violation is communicated to the SM at these super-soft scales, our solution of the Strong CP Problem is not spoiled by the presence of heavy new states motivated by other puzzles in physics beyond the Standard Model. In addition, these models generically predict a dark sector that may lead to interesting cosmological signatures.
