The aim of this paper is to show municipal and organic waste as an alternative source of energy and the benefits which can bring their energy use. These benefits concern both environmental reasons, as well as freedom from conventional energy sources and increasing energy security. The article discusses the biogas technology and plasma technology as the most promising waste to energy technologies.

The increasing diversity of renewable energy sources in developing countries is receiving attention in discussions about the future of energy security and climate change. Given the strong relationship between energy demand and economic growth, this paper explores the factors that influence the diversification of non-hydro renewable energy sources across 117 developing countries covering more than 30 years. We contribute to the literature by using a new measure capturing diversification of non-hydro renewable energy sources and explore several estimation techniques in investigating determinants of diversification. Controlling for regional variations, results show that higher per capita income, implementation of policies promoting renewable energy, technological innovations and human capital improvement encourage diversification. In addition, the squared term of income was included to capture nonlinear effects. The results depict a U-shaped kind of relationship suggesting non-monotonic changes in renewable energy diversification in relation to increasing affluence. This implies that greater environmental concern in terms of energy use can be expected as countries developed. Other determinants suggest that high dependence on imported fuels and increasing world market price for crude oil will motivate developing countries to diversify non-hydro renewable energy sources. In contrast, the local abundance of hydropower and the availability of natural resources like oil impede diversification. Finally, we conclude that the progressive integration of renewable energy in developing countries energy mix can be hastened with environmental awareness, relevant policy, and favorable economic conditions.

The efficient use of energy is the key to maintaining our world’s resources; indeed our future depends on it. Energy conservation can be achieved through increased efficient energy use, in connection with decreased energy consumption and reduced consumption from conventional energy sources. Energy conservation can result in increased financial capital, environmental quality, national security, personal security, and human comfort. Individuals and organizations that are direct consumers of energy choose to conserve energy to reduce energy costs and promote economic security. In view of the nation's energy security interests, it is important to be increasing alternative fuel capability throughout the fleet. The need to ensure the nation's long-term energy security is of such vital concern that it takes precedent over possible short-term convention energy sources consumption and environmental impacts.

There is a range of modern approaches and models in literature for the evaluation and determination of energy security, which are based on different parameters and indicators. For most of them, a common characteristic is emphasizing the availability of energy, as an important dimension for ensuring energy security. In this paper, concise overview of Serbian energy sectors is given and appropriate energy indicators are defined and determined. Selected indicators provide insight into the main components that characterize availability - security of supply, self-sufficiency, diversification of energy sources, level of renewable energy use and technological maturity. Besides calculation of energy indicators, the aim is to investigate and establish the relationships among components of availability of energy in Serbia, and to provide some recommendations for the policy makers to develop efficacious measures for enhancing energy security. Therefore Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methodology is applied to analyze collected data, to reveal cause - effect relationships, and to prioritize components of availability mutually. Conclusion is that the main activities in Serbian energy sector should be directed to improvement of energy efficiency, increase the use of renewable energy sources and diversification of energy sources and energy imports directions.


Technological and legal innovation have been central to energy development for centuries. Today’s era of accelerating change is transforming energy law. Disruption and change to established energy sources, supply, distribution, and energy consumer access is driven by legal innovations that, in turn, prompt or respond to technology. Interaction between legal and technological innovation is advancing the growing global effort to transition from high-carbon energy to low-energy or no-carbon energy—evidenced by the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change and the growing market demand for carbon-free electricity. This global transition to low-emission energy sources allows nations to take advantage of emerging economic opportunities and facilitates new forms of energy technology development, energy distribution, and governance. But progress is uneven and concerns such as energy security are initiating technological innovation in many existing energy technologies. These authors from twenty-one nations examine relevant developments in global energy law triggered by these innovations.

This chapter summarizes some of the book’s main arguments and provides avenues for future research. We point to the ideational turn as well as to culturally based enquiries into Comparative Political Economy as offering particular promise. Finally, this chapter additionally points to two major sources of societal and economic transformation, discussing in passing other major economic changes, such as increasing automation, advances in artificial intelligence, and the roll-out of robots across a variety of economic sectors. These two potentially explosive sources of change include energy security, a field in which the race for autarchy is juxtaposed with limits to the practical applicability of renewable energy sources. Environmental factors and environmental degradation similarly impose dramatic constraints to further economic development and might induce a dramatic reconfiguration.

In this study we aimed to determine the extent to which changes in the share of renewable energy sources, their structural complex, and the level of energy security in Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia (EECCA) countries in the medium- and long-term are interconnected. The study was performed through modeling and determination of the structural characteristics of energy security in the countries. The methodology of the approach to modeling was based on solving the problem of nonlinear optimization by selecting a certain scenario. For the study, the data of EECCA countries were used. The ability of EECCA countries to benefit from long-term indirect and induced advantages of the transformation period depends on the extent to which their domestic supply chains facilitate the deployment of energy transformation and induced economic activity. This study provides an opportunity to assess the degree of influence of renewable energy sources on the level of energy security of countries in the context of energy resource diversification. The high degree of influence of renewable energy sources on energy security in the EECCA countries has been proven in the implementation of the developed scenarios for its increase. Energy security is growing. At the same time, its level depends not only on an increase in the share of renewable sources but also on the structure of energy resources complex of countries, and the development of various renewable energy sources. Therefore, today the EECCA countries are forced not only to increase the share of renewable energy sources but also to attach strategic importance to the structural content of their energy complex.

Fossil fuels have been the mainstream of energy supply and a major source of foreign exchange earnings for the Federal Government of Nigeria, in spite of being an unrenewable and unsustainable source of energy. Nigeria is yet to tap into the full benefits after privatising its power sector, including the new global evolution in the energy sector and the resulting increasing demand for renewable energy sources, which some consider to be cheaper and more environmentally friendly than fossil fuels and their allied products. Energy security is a challenge to socio-economic development in Nigeria, due to the country’s over-dependency on fossil fuels. In terms of their impact and the potentials to preserve energy sources for longevity and sustainability, however, fossil fuels will come to be seen as an out-dated alternative in the power sector as the energy industry evolves. The implications for Nigeria’s oil sector will not be limited to dwindling crude oil prices. The concerns include poor energy utilisation in Nigeria and the need to promote energy efficiency and sustainability. They have led to the formulation of new energy policies around the world to serve as a vehicle for translating solutions into reality. This study has adopted a library-based legal research method with a comparative approach. The study reveals that it is the lack of a coherent legal framework with incentives for using renewable energy that is largely seen as the key issue causing slow uptake of renewable energy as an alternative source of energy in Nigeria. As well as the need for a coherent legal framework on energy and incentives for using renewable energy sources, the study advocates stringent enforcement of existing energy regulatory policies.
