The aim of this anthropometric survey, conducted between 2015 and 2016 in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), was to map local geographical differences in male stature and some other anthropometric characteristics (sitting height, arm span). In addition, to investigate the main environmental factors influencing physical growth, the documented values of height would be compared with available nutritional and socioeconomic statistics. Anthropometric data were collected in 3192 boys aged approximately 18.3 years (17–20 years), from 97 schools in 37 towns. When corrected for population size in the examined regions, the average height of young males in BiH is 181.2 cm (181.4 cm in the Bosniak-Croat Federation, 180.9 cm in Republika Srpska). The regional variation is considerable—from 179.7 cm in the region of Doboj to 184.5 cm in the region of Trebinje. These results fill a long-term gap in the anthropological research of the Western Balkans and confirm older reports that the population of the Dinaric Alps is distinguished by extraordinary physical stature. Together with the Dutch, Montenegrins and Dalmatians, men from Herzegovina (183.4 cm) can be regarded as the tallest in the world. Because both nutritional standards and socioeconomic conditions are still deeply suboptimal, the most likely explanation of this exceptional height lies in specific genetic factors associated with the spread of Y haplogroup I-M170. The genetic potential for height in this region could then be the greatest in the world. Future studies should further elucidate the roots of this intriguing phenomenon, which touches an important aspect of human biodiversity.

Background: There are various circumstances where measurements are not actually possible, replacement parameters can be used to estimate body height. Many characteristics of body height measurement and how to measure it. These include anthropometric measurements that can be used for the identification of medicolegal-forensic processes. Body height in clinical medicine and in the field of scientific research can be easily estimated using various anthropometric parameters such as arm span, knee height, foot length and foot breadth, and others. The arm span and foot length has proved to be one of the most reliable predictors. This study was conducted to estimate of body height from arm span and foot length using the regression equation and to determine the correlation between the body height and arm span and foot length.Methods: This study was conducted at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surabaya with 182 Javanese female students. Stature, arm span and foot length measured directly using anthropometric technique and measuring tape. The data obtained were then analyzed with SPSS version 16. The regression equation was derived for the estimate of body height and the relationship between stature, arm span and foot length determined by the Pearson correlation.               Results: We found that the mean body height of Javanese women was 1534,45 ± 47,623  mm, mean of arm span 1543,25 ± 60,468 mm and the mean of foot length 226,14 ± 9,586 mm. The correlation between stature and arm span was positive and significant (r = 0,715  , p <0,05). The correlation between stature and foot length was positive and significant (r = 0,726 , p <0,05). The correlation between stature and arm span and foot length was positive and significant (r = 0,798, p <0,05).               Conclusion: Body height correlates well with the arm span and foot length so that it can be used as a reliable marker for high estimates using regression equations.

Abstract SHOX (short stature homeobox-containing gene) mutations causing haploinsufficiency have been reported in some individuals with idiopathic short stature and in many patients with Leri-Weill-dyschondrosteosis. Around 80% of SHOX mutations are complete gene deletions, whereas diverse point mutations account for the rest. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of SHOX mutations in children with idiopathic short stature and to give an unbiased characterization of the haploinsufficiency phenotype of such children. We recruited 140 children (61 girls), in our clinic, with idiopathic short stature, which was defined by the presence of normal IGF-I and free T4; a normal karyotype in females; the absence of endomysium antibodies, of chronic organic, psychological, or syndromatic disease; and by the lack of clear signs of any osteodysplasia. Height, arm span, and sitting height were recorded, and subischial leg length was calculated. Two highly polymorphic microsatellite markers located around the SHOX coding region (CA-SHOX repeat and DXYS233) were PCR-amplified with fluorescent primers and separated in an automatic sequencing machine. Analysis of parental DNA was performed in the probands who had only one fragment size of each of both markers. SHOX haploinsufficiency caused by a SHOX deletion was confirmed in three probands (2%), all females, who carried a de novo deletion through loss of the paternal allele. Their auxological data revealed a significant shortening of arms and legs in the presence of a low-normal sitting height, when compared with the other 137 children tested. Therefore, the extremities-trunk ratio (sum of leg length and arm span, divided by sitting height) for total height was significantly lower in the three SHOX haploinsufficient probands, in comparison with the whole group. This observation was confirmed with the auxological data of five additional patients (four females) previously diagnosed with SHOX haploinsufficiency; all but the youngest girl had height-adjusted extremities-trunk ratios more than 1 sd below the mean. All children with SHOX haploinsufficiency exhibited at least one characteristic radiological sign of Leri-Weill-dyschondrosteosis in their left-hand radiography, namely triangularization of the distal radial epiphysis, pyramidalization of the distal carpal row, or lucency of the distal ulnar border of the radius. Our observations suggest that it is rational to limit SHOX mutation screening to children with an extremities-trunk ratio less than 1.95 + 1/2 height (m) and to add a critical judgment of the hand radiography.

This study develops multivariate models to predict swimming performance based on multidimensional assessment. 66 male (age 13.6 ± 0.6 y) and 67 female (11.5 ± 0.6 y) swimmers undertook a test battery including a sports background and training questionnaire, anthropometry, general and specific fitness tests, and technique. Competitive performance (LEN scores in three best events) was the predicted variable. A multiple linear regression model explained 82.4% of performance variability in males (based on age, sitting height, 30-min test, 6 × 50 m at 1:30, and swimming index) and 84.5% in females (age, 30-min test, 6 × 50 m at 1:30, and velocity at 50 m). Discriminant analysis using a four-group split-sample approach correctly classified 94.1% of the best male swimmers (based on age, 30-min test, 6 × 50 m at 1:30, shoulder extension, arm span, and height), and 71.0% of the best females swimmers (30-min test, horizontal floating, velocity at 50 m, and age). Chronological age was the main predictor of performance in this age category. Main predictive variables pertained to the anthropometric (particularly in males), specific fitness (aerobic speed and endurance), and technical domains (particularly in females). In these ages competitions should be organized according to year of birth and not by age categories.

Abstract Background The phenotypic features of SHOX deficiency (SHOX-D) are highly variable and can be very mild, especially in young children. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate auxological and radiological indicators that could be predictive of SHOX-D in children. Methods Molecular analysis of the SHOX gene was performed in 296 subjects with growth impairment or skeletal disproportion, without alternative diagnosis. Auxological variables and radiographs of the hand, wrist and forearm were evaluated. Results SHOX mutations (88% inherited, 12% de novo) were identified in 52 subjects. The most predictive auxological indicators of SHOX-D were an increased sitting height/height ratio and a decreased arm span/height ratio. The convexity of distal radial metaphysis at X-ray, not yet reported in literature, was also found to be predictive of SHOX-D. In young children, stratification of data by bone age also highlighted ulnar tilt, lucency of the ulnar border of the distal radius and enlarged radius as the radiological signs most related to SHOX-D . Conclusions In this study, the analysis of auxological and radiological indicators in SHOX-D children allowed to identify an additional early radiological sign and underlines the importance of family auxological evaluation.

Abstract The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between anthropometric variables, body composition and propulsive force in swimmers aged 9-17 years. Anthropometric characteristics (body height and mass, sitting height, arm span, arm muscle area and body composition) and the propulsive force of the arm (tethered swimming test) were evaluated in 56 competitive male swimmers. Tanner’s stages of genital maturation (P1-5) were used. The data analysis included correlations and multiple linear regression. The propulsive force of the arm was correlated with body height (r = 0.34; p =0.013), arm span (r = 0.29; p =0.042), sitting height (r = 0.36; p =0.009), % body fat (r = 0.33; p =0.016), lean body mass (r = 0.34; p =0.015) and arm muscle area (r = 0.31; p =0.026). Using multiple linear regression models, the percent body fat and height were identified as significant predictors of the propulsive force of the arm after controlling for the maturation stage. This model explained 22% (R2 = 0.22) of associations. In conclusion, the propulsive force of swimmers was related to body height and percent body fat

Abstract Objectives We performed a cross-sectional study on anthropometric and laboratory characteristics of inhabitants of Rampasasa (Flores, Indonesia). Adults were categorised according to ancestry into three groups: pygmoid (P/P, offspring of pygmoid parents, n=8), mixed pygmoid (P/N, offspring of pygmoid and non-pygmoid parents, n=12) and non-pygmoid (N/N, n=10). Children (n=28) were P/N. Methods Measurements included height, weight, sitting height, arm span, head circumference, haematological analysis and serum albumin, calcium, vitamin D, insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and IGF binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3). Pubertal stage and bone age was assessed in children. Anthropometric data were expressed as standard deviation score (SDS) for age. IGF-I, IGFBP-3 and IGF-I/IGFBP-3 ratio were expressed for age, bone age and pubertal stage. Results Mean height SDS showed a gradient from P/P (−4.0) via P/N (−3.2) to N/N (−2.3) (−3.4, −3.1 and −2.2 adjusted for age-associated shrinking). Sitting height and head circumference showed similar gradients. Serum IGF-I SDS was similar among groups (approximately −1 SDS). IGFBP-3 SDS tended toward a gradient from P/P (−1.9) via P/N (−1.5) to N/N (−1.1), but IGF-I/IGFBP-3 ratio was normal in all groups. In P/P and P/N, mean head circumference SDS was >2 SD greater than mean height SDS. Children showed a progressive growth failure and bone age delay, delayed female pubertal onset and an initial low serum IGF-I, normal IGFBP-3 and low IGF-I/IGFBP-3 ratio. Conclusions P/P showed proportionate short stature with relative macrocephaly and relatively low IGFBP-3; P/N presented an intermediate pattern. P/N children were progressively short, showed delayed skeletal maturation, delayed puberty in girls and low IGF-I and IGF-I/IGFBP-3.

Attention to the dimensions of the human body has actually existed since centuries ago. Even philosophers, artists, and architects admire the size of the human body. The design of ancient worship such as the Greek temple is the result of the design collected from the proportional measures of various members of the human body. This study aims to explore the proportion of golden section found in the human body both men and women. Methods of data collection using anthropometric data of Indonesian people. Further data is analyzed proportion using golden section. The results of this study indicate that the human-Indonesian body contained the value of Golden Section proportion is the ratio between the height of the elbow standing with height; hip height with standing eye height; tall sitting eyes with a sitting vertical range; Vertical reach sits with standing vertical range; Knee height with sitting height. The value of the proportion of the golden section contained in the human body applies to both men and women. The results of this study can be an early reference findings, that the human body contained the value of the proportion of golden section. These findings still need to be explored with further research, given the problem of the proportion of golden section associated with the numbers so it requires accuracy of measurement data. Bahkan para filsuf, seniman, dan arsitek mengagumi ukuran-ukuran tubuh manusia. Perancangan peribadatan kuno seperti kuil Yunani merupakan hasil rancangan yang terkumpul dari ukuran-ukuran yang proporsional dari berbagai anggota tubuh manusia. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengeksplorasi proporsi golden section yang terdapat pada tubuh manusia baik laki-laki maupun perempuan. Metode pengumpulan data menggunakan data antropometri orang Indonesia. Selanjutnya data dianalisis proporsinya menggunakan golden section. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pada tubuh manusia-Indonesia terkandung nilai proporsi Golden Section yaitu perbandingan antara tinggi siku berdiri dengan tinggi badan; tinggi pinggul dengan tinggi mata berdiri; tinggi mata duduk dengan jangkauan vertikal duduk; Jangkauan vertikal duduk dengan jangkauan vertikal berdiri; Tinggi lutut dengan tinggi duduk. Nilai proporsi golden section yang dikandung pada tubuh manusia berlaku baik pada Laki-laki maupun perempuan. Hasil penelitian ini dapat menjadi referensi awal temuan, bahwa tubuh manusia terkandung nilai proporsi golden section. Temuan ini masih perlu didalami dengan penelitian lanjutan, mengingat persoalan proporsi golden section berkaitan dengan angka-angka sehingga memerlukan akurasi dan ketepatan data-data pengukuran. In order to monitor training effects and physical developments in elite sports, it may be beneficial to perform anthropometric measurements and physical fitness tests regularly. In this study, the relationship between the anthropometric properties and physical fitness values of elite figure skating athletes were investigated. 21 elite athletes in the 11-16 age group, female (n=12) and male (n=9), participated in the study. Anthropometric measurements were taken in accordance with The International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK) protocol. Σ6 and Σ8 skinfold thickness, body fat ratio (BF%), body mass index (BMI), Manouvrier Index (MI), waist/hip ratio and somatotype components in girls Group II, III and in boys Group II were calculated. Also, balance, flexibility, handgrip strength, vertical jump, agility, medicine ball overhead back throw, speed, and endurance tests were applied to all groups. Descriptive statistical analyzes were made using the IBM SPSS 25.0 statistics program. The relationship between variables was calculated by the Pearson Correlation coefficient. The significance level was taken as p<0.01 and p<0.05. In boys, body weight, body height and arm span, sitting height, BMI, humerus breadth and foot length were observed to be associated with all physical fitness parameters (p<0.01, p<0.05), except balance and agility; Girth measurements were related to handgrip strength, vertical jump, overhead medicine ball backward throw, speed and endurance (p<0.01, p<0.05). Negative relationships of the endomorphic feature with flexibility and endurance were determined (p<0.05). In girls, it was found that body weight, body height, and arm span, sitting height and BMI were related to flexibility, handgrip strength, medicine ball overhead back throw (p<0.01, p<0.05); girth measurements were found to be related to flexibility, handgrip strength, vertical jump, overhead medicine ball back throw (p<0.01, p<0.05); also, significant correlations (p<0.01, p<0.05) were found between the handgrip strength and breadth measurements. Assessment of the relationship between morphological features and motor skills with specific field tests and standardized tests performed at regular intervals in athletes can contribute to the athletes' selection and training planning of the relevant federations and orientating towards their goals.<p> </p><p><strong> Article visualizations:</strong></p><p><img src="/-counters-/edu_01/0629/a.php" alt="Hit counter" /></p>
