Numerical modelling of odour dispersion around a cubical obstacle using large eddy simulation

In the present work two different large eddy simulation (LES) approaches, namely the Dynamic Smagorinsky model and the Wale model, are used to simulate the air flow and pollutant dispersion around a cubical obstacle. Results are compared with wind tunnel data (WT) and with results from the Smagorinsky LES model. Overall agreement was good between the different LES approaches and the WT results, both for the mean and fluctuating flow and concentration patterns. LES models can provide good estimates of concentration fluctuation intensity and enable the calculation of the intermittency factor. The model results indicate that LES is a viable tool for odour impact assessment.

Abstract. An intercomparison between 10 single-column (SCM) and 5 large-eddy simulation (LES) models is presented for a radiation fog case study inspired by the Local and Non-local Fog Experiment (LANFEX) field campaign. Seven of the SCMs represent single-column equivalents of operational numerical weather prediction (NWP) models, whilst three are research-grade SCMs designed for fog simulation, and the LESs are designed to reproduce in the best manner currently possible the underlying physical processes governing fog formation. The LES model results are of variable quality and do not provide a consistent baseline against which to compare the NWP models, particularly under high aerosol or cloud droplet number concentration (CDNC) conditions. The main SCM bias appears to be toward the overdevelopment of fog, i.e. fog which is too thick, although the inter-model variability is large. In reality there is a subtle balance between water lost to the surface and water condensed into fog, and the ability of a model to accurately simulate this process strongly determines the quality of its forecast. Some NWP SCMs do not represent fundamental components of this process (e.g. cloud droplet sedimentation) and therefore are naturally hampered in their ability to deliver accurate simulations. Finally, we show that modelled fog development is as sensitive to the shape of the cloud droplet size distribution, a rarely studied or modified part of the microphysical parameterisation, as it is to the underlying aerosol or CDNC.

The effects of a water surface wave on the vorticity in the turbulence underneath are studied for Langmuir turbulence using wave-phase-resolved large-eddy simulation. The simulations are performed on a dynamically evolving wave-surface-fitted grid such that the phase-resolved wave motions and their effects on the turbulence are explicitly captured. This study focuses on the vorticity structures and dynamics in Langmuir turbulence driven by a steady and co-aligned progressive wave and surface shear stress. For the first time, the detailed vorticity dynamics of the wave–turbulence interaction in Langmuir turbulence in a wave-phase-resolved frame is revealed. The wave-phase-resolved simulation provides detailed descriptions of many characteristic features of Langmuir turbulence, such as elongated quasi-streamwise vortices. The simulation also reveals the variation of the strength and the inclination angles of the vortices with the wave phase. The variation is found to be caused by the periodic stretching and tilting of the wave orbital straining motions. The cumulative effect of the wave on the wave-phase-averaged vorticity is analysed using the Lagrangian average. It is discovered that, in addition to the tilting effect induced by the Lagrangian mean shear gradient of the wave, the phase correlation between the vorticity fluctuations and the wave orbital straining is also important to the cumulative vorticity evolution. Both the fluctuation correlation effect and the mean tilting effect are found to amplify the streamwise vorticity. On the other hand, for the vertical vorticity, the fluctuation correlation effect cancels the mean tilting effect, and the net change of the vertical vorticity by the wave straining is negligible. As a result, the wave straining enhances only the streamwise vorticity and cumulatively tilts vertical vortices towards the streamwise direction. The above processes are further quantified analytically. The role of the fluctuation correlation effect in the wave-phase-averaged vorticity dynamics provides a deeper understanding of the physical processes underlying the wave–turbulence interaction in Langmuir turbulence.

In urban areas, pollutants are emitted from vehicles then disperse from the ground level to the downstream urban canopy layer (UCL) under the effect of the prevailing wind. For a hypothetical urban area in the form of idealized street canyons, the building-height-to-street-width (aspect) ratio (AR) changes the ground roughness which in turn leads to different turbulent airflow features. Turbulence is considered an important factor for the removal of reactive pollutants by means of dispersion/dilution and chemical reactions. Three values of aspect ratio, covering most flow scenarios of urban street canyons, are employed in this study. The pollutant dispersion and reaction are calculated using large-eddy simulation (LES) with chemical reactions. Turbulence timescale and reaction timescale at every single point of the UCL domain are calculated to examine the pollutant removal. The characteristic mechanism of reactive pollutant dispersion over street canyons will be reported in the conference.

A computational study of unsteady, separated fluid flow was made using the Large Eddy Simulation (LES). As flow problem the turbulent flow past a circular cylinder at a Reynolds number of Re = 3900 was chosen. The objective of this work was to study the numerical and modelling aspects of the dynamic Germano-LES turbulence model. Before LES can be used for applications of practical relevance, such as the flow around a complete aircraft or automobile, extensive tests must be carried out on simpler configurations to understand the quality of LES. Also, the influence of different grid resolutions was examined. Due to the fact of a low Reynolds number, no-slip boundary conditions were used at solid walls. Two different subgrid scale models were applied. In recent years several simulations were carried out using the Smagorinsky-LES model but there is still a lack of experience using the dynamic Germano-LES model, which takes the local flow parameters into account. Several simulations with different parameters and grid-models were carried out both with the Germano-LES model and the Smagorinsky-LES model. Comparisons were made between these two models as well as with several experimental data taken from literature.

Large Eddy Simulation (LES) has been carried out to study the flow of a turbulent impinging jet with large nozzle height-to-diameter ratio. The dynamic Smagorinsky model was used to simulate the subgrid-scale stresses. The jet exit Reynolds number is 28,000. The study presents a detailed evaluation of the flow characteristics of an impinging jet with nozzle height of 20 diameters above the plate. Results of the mean normalized centerline velocity and wall shear stress show good agreement with previous experiments. Analysis of the flow field shows that vortical structures generated due to the Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities in the shear flow close to the nozzle undergo break down or merging when moving towards the plate. Unlike impinging jets with small stand-off distance where the ring-like vortices keep their interconnected shape upon reaching the plate, no sign of interconnection was observed on the plate for this large stand-off distance. A large deflection of the jet axis was observed for this type of impinging jet when compared to the cases with small nozzle height-to-diameter ratios.
