This study aims to improve the design factors of air diffuser systems that have been analyzed in laboratory experiments, with consideration of the field conditions of dam reservoirs. In this study, the destratification number (DN), destratification radius, and efficiency are considered as design factors. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation experiment is performed in diverse field conditions in order to analyze these factors. The results illustrate the wider range of DN values in field conditions and the relationship of the destratification radius and efficiency to DN. The results can lead to better performance of air diffuser systems and water quality management in dam reservoir sites.

The relationship of cumulative chill-hours (hours with a mean temperature <7.2°C) and heating degree-days (base 7.2°C) to carpogenic germination of pseudosclerotia of Monilinia vaccinii-corymbosi, which causes mummy berry disease of blueberry, was investigated. In two laboratory experiments, pseudosclerotia collected from rabbiteye blueberry in Georgia were conditioned at 5 to 6°C for 26 to 1,378 h prior to placement in conditions favorable for germination and apothecium development. The number of chill-hours accumulated during the conditioning period affected the subsequent proportion of pseudosclerotia that germinated and produced apothecia, with the greatest incidence of carpogenic germination occurring after intermediate levels of chilling (≈700 chill-hours). The minimum chilling requirement for germination and apothecium production was considerably lower than that reported previously for pseudo-sclerotia from highbush blueberry in northern production regions. The rate of carpogenic germination was strongly affected by interactions between the accumulation of chill-hours and degree-days during the conditioning and germination periods; pseudosclerotia exposed to prolonged chilling periods, once transferred to suitable conditions, germinated and produced apothecia more rapidly (after fewer degree-days had accumulated) than those exposed to shorter chilling periods. Thus, pseudosclerotia of M. vaccinii-corymbosi are adapted to germinate carpogenically following cold winters (high chill-hours, low degree-days) as well as warm winters (low chill-hours, high degree-days). Results were validated in a combined field-laboratory experiment in which pseudosclerotia that had received various levels of natural chilling were allowed to germinate in controlled conditions in the laboratory, and in two field experiments in which pseudosclerotia were exposed to natural chilling and germination conditions. A simple model describing the timing of apothecium emergence in relation to cumulative chill-hours and degree-days was developed based on the experiments. The model should be useful for better timing of field scouting programs for apothecia to aid in management of primary infection by M. vaccinii-corymbosi.

Applied Linguistics is a diverse field, comprising a substantial number of sub-fields, sub-specialisations and related fields. To see that this is the case one need only examine the various hand- books and encyclopaedic references that have been published in the last ten years to see the wide range of topics that have been covered. As with many professional areas in academia, Applied Linguistics is organised around national organisations, with its international structure being a loose confederation known as the International Association of Applied Linguistics (AILA). Given these diverse academic and structural arrangements, it should not be surprising if academics within different national associations were to cluster around different interests within the field. This study explores the question of what emphases are found in various parts of the world in Applied Linguistics, and in particular, the relationship of Australian Applied Linguistics to international trends using a structural text analysis of abstracts related to Applied Linguistics as well as an historical review of the trends involved.

The evolution of snow and glacier research in Switzerland is outlined. The settling, creep, viscosity and slipping of the snow cover are discussed in detail and the relationship of these comparatively simple processes to the more complex movements in a glacier are described. The importance of further research in glacier physics in connection with the crystallographic and mechanical properties of ice is stressed; certain preliminary laboratory experiments and some subjects for further research in the field are suggested. The Great Aletsch Glacier is recommended for this owing to the proximity of the Jungfraujoch Research Institute and facilities for transport by the Jungfraujoch Railway.

Based on the geological and the experimental data of the13#coal seam of Sun-Cun Coal Mine, the relationship curve between the geothermal heat in Sun-Cun coal mine and experimental wind speed has been fit out.According this and the laboratory experiments,the relational expression between the quantity of CO2 produced in the period of spontaneous combustion and the wind speed in the coal mine has been developed. The research results show that when the wind speed exceeds 2m/s,the quantity of CO2 produced has a sharp rising tendency.

One of the requirements for existing personal computers, PCs, is that the hardware inside must maintain an operating temperature as low as possible. One way to achieve that is to place the hardware components at locations with enough airflow around it. However, the relationship between the airflow and temperature of the components is unknown before they are placed at specific locations inside a PC. In this work a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis is coupled to a Design of Experiment (DOE) methodology to answer typical minitower key questions: a) how do the possible positions of hardware components affect their temperature?, and b) is it possible to get an optimal placement for these hardware components using the data collected by the CFD simulation results? The DOE methodology is used to optimize the analysis for a very large number of possible configurations. The results help in identifying where the efforts need to be placed in order to optimize the positioning of the hardware components for similar configurations at the designing stage. Somehow the results show that general conclusions could be drawn, but that there are not specific rules that could be applied to every configuration.

Cerebral aneurysms are known as the top reason of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). They are studied in the medical and the engineering field to reveal their pathogenesis, progression, and rupture mechanisms1,2. The pathological studies revealed the site of predilection, rupture rate, the risk factors1, inflammation within the aneurysm, and conditions of endothelial cells (EC) in the aneurysms3. The current pathological analyses of the cerebral aneurysms are all phenomenological and it does not consider the cause-and-effect mechanisms between the mechanical stimulation and the physiological effect although hemodynamics is thought to play an important role in the mechanisms of aneurysms. One reason that the aneurysms’ mechanisms remain unsolved is because the pathology and hemodynamics are studied independently. Purpose of this study is to reveal the relationship of endothelial cell, thickness, and hemodynamics of the cerebral aneurysms by comparing the scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses, μCT, and the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses of the cerebral aneurysms.

A tension leg platform (TLP) tendon system experiences oscillatory tensile stresses, and therefore is vulnerable to fatigue and fracture. Because design factors have significant uncertainty, a reliability analysis to quantify structural performance is appropriate. A maintenance program of periodic inspection and repair shows promise for improving system reliability and enhancing structural integrity. The performance of a TLP tendon system was simulated in order to study the relationship of design factors to system reliability. Effects on system reliability and maintenance performance (repair and replacement rates) can be studied as a function of (a) number of joints, J; (b) number of members, M; (c) inspection frequency; (d) inspection sensitivity as defined by the POD (probability of detection) curve; (e) ultimate strength; (f) repair policy; etc. The performance of an initially damaged or flawed tendon system is investigated. The reliability of a system that uses pressurized tendons to detect through-thickness cracks is studied, as is the vulnerability of the tendon system before replacement of broken tendons.

<p>Designers of sports facilities focus on physical aspects, like walls and tile angles to improve an athlete’s performance. However, from experience, the mental components of an athlete’s performance are overlooked; which is believed to have a greater impact on their overall performance.  Using my experiences to produce a unique body of research, this thesis focusses on using the athlete’s perspective to design. This thesis investigates Sporting Facilities and Natatoriums are the focus. Using the skill of architects to create space and affect emotion, the thesis will investigate how they can be used to create an atmosphere that will allow an athlete to enter the optimal emotional state to achieve a successful sporting performance.  The research will look the emotion and atmosphere of architecture, and the knowledge of sports psychology to understand how atmosphere can be used to challenge current design conventions.  The approach will look at the relationship of facilities with and without local community involvement when they are not being used for competitions. This allows the needs of the community which has an effect upon the design, to be controlled. Which allows for an athlete’s perspective to drive the design.  Using Natatoriums as the focus of the thesis, a series of design investigations will be conducted looking at how these spaces can be developed and arranged to optimise athlete performance. Objectives are to understand the arrangement of program and atmosphere required at each stage of an athlete’s pre-competition process, so a facility can be developed that is biased towards an athlete’s mental state versus other design factors.</p>

The yokeless and segmented armature axial flux machine is considered an excellent topology for electric vehicles application. However, its performance is severely limited by the stator cooling system. The heat pipe, as the small size, lightweight, but highly efficient passive phase-change cooling element, has been attracting more and more attention in the thermal management methods of electric motors. Therefore, the relationship between the thermal performance of the heat pipe with temperature is measured in detail through an experimental test platform in this paper. Further, a novel stator cooling structure that combines the heat pipe with the housing water-cooling method is introduced to improve the temperature distribution of the stator. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation verifies that the proposed cooling structure can accelerate the release of heat from the stator and reduce the temperature of the stator significantly.
