Correlations of extractable heavy metals with organic matters in contaminated river sediments

In southern Taiwan, almost all the main rivers have been contaminated by anthropogenic heavy metals and organic matters. The main pollution sources include agricultural, industrial, and domestic activities. River sediments potentially have large capacities to accumulate heavy metals and organic matters when the river water flows through it. The sediments sampled from high contaminated river (the Yenshui River) and moderately contaminated rivers (the Tsengwen, Chishui, Potzu, and Peikang Rivers) were used to realize correlations between each kind of aqua regia extractable heavy metals (Co, Cr, Cu, Zn, Ni, Pb, Mn, and Fe) and organic matters in vertical sediment cores. Organic matters and aqua regia extractable heavy metal concentrations, analyzed by strong acid-digested extraction, were determined in vertical profile segments from downstream sediments of the five rivers. Sum of six aqua regia extractable heavy metals (Co, Cr, Cu, Zn, Ni, and Pb) were below 3,000 mg/kg in sediments of the Yenshui River, and below 500 mg/kg in the other four rivers' sediments. Strongly positive correlations (r = 0.83-0.95) between each kind of aqua regia extractable heavy metals and organic matters (concentration range between 0.6 to 3.8%) were observed in sediments of the Yenshui River. The slopes of the linear regressive lines approximated the average metal complexation ratios with organic matters in the sediments. In sediments of the other four rivers, smaller positive correlation coefficients between aqua regia extractable heavy metals and organic matters (below 2.6%) were observed. The complexation ratios derived from the four moderately polluted river sediments were smaller than those derived from the highly contaminated river sediments, indicating that the importance of organic matters in the accumulation of heavy metals in river sediments.

Abstract. The concentrations of heavy metals (As, Cr, Cd, Cu, Zn, Mn, Ni and Pb) were measured in the water, sediment, and three common plants (Rorippa indica,Rumex acetosaandOrychophragmus violaceus) from Nanjing Forestry University reach of Zihu River, China. Results showed that the toxic threshold values exceeded the upper limits for Cd and Mn in water. In the same way, toxic threshold values exceeded the limitation for As, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in sediment. Overproof Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn were also found in rhizosphere soil. Average concentration of Zn was higher in sediment, followed by Mn in both water and rhizosphere soil. It was found that heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, As and Zn) in water may be mainly derived from metal processing, electroplating industries, industrial wastewater, and domestic sewage. Positive correlation was observed between As and Cu, As and Ni, Cr and Pb, Cu and Ni, Pb and Zn in water. Moreover, significant positive correlations between Ni and As were observed. Preliminary judgment showed that sediment has a depuration effect on As, Cu, Ni, Cr, Pb and Zn in water, according to correlation coefficients of water and sediment. Comparing the relations between sediment and rhizosphere soil, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in the rhizosphere soil were mainly from the sediment, and Mn was mainly from water. Three plants played active roles on enrichment of As, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn, particularly, Zn and Mn can be accumulated to higher concentration in these three plants. As content in rhizosphere soil was found to be lower than sediment, indicating As was most absorbed by the plants. Thus, three plants were playing a potential role in environment inductors.

Abstract This study aimed to quantify the association of four anthropometric parameters of the human arm, namely, the arm circumference (CA), arm length (LA), skinfold thickness (ST) and inter-sensor distance (ISD), with amplitude (RMS) and crosstalk (CT) of mechanomyography (MMG) signals. Twenty-five young, healthy, male participants were recruited to perform forearm flexion, pronation and supination torque tasks. Three accelerometers were employed to record the MMG signals from the biceps brachii (BB), brachialis (BRA) and brachioradialis (BRD) at 80% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). Signal RMS was used to quantify the amplitude of the MMG signals from a muscle, and cross-correlation coefficients were used to quantify the magnitude of the CT among muscle pairs (BB & BRA, BRA & BRD, and BB & BRD). For all investigated muscles and pairs, RMS and CT showed negligible to low negative correlations with CA, LA and ISD (r = −0.0001–−0.4611), and negligible to moderate positive correlations with ST (r = 0.004–0.511). However, almost all of these correlations were statistically insignificant (p > 0.05). These findings suggest that RMS and CT values for the elbow flexor muscles recorded and quantified using accelerometers appear invariant to anthropometric parameters.

The study evaluated the total and available heavy metal (Cd, Cu, Cr, Pb, Ni, and Zn) contents of two red soils in Samar, Philippines, one developed from slate near a mining site (Bagacay soil) and the other from serpentinite (Salcedo soil), a well-known source of heavy metals. Soil samples were collected from every horizon in each profile and samples were digested using aqua regia and NH4NO3 to determine total and available heavy metals content, respectively. Results revealed that Salcedo soil had high contents of total Cr (average: 1353 mg kg-1), total Ni (average: 610 mg kg-1), and available Cr (average: 0.19 mg kg-1) that exceeded the maximum allowable contents in agricultural soils but it had low amounts of the available form of the heavy metals. Bagacay soil showed very low contents of both total and available heavy metals due to their low amounts in the parent rock. The red Bagacay soil showed no effect of the nearby mining activity.

Abstract. Ouma KO, Otieno SA, Sharma RR 2019. Effects of selected heavy metals on morphology of Oreochromis niloticus and Clarias gariepinus along Ruiru River, Kenya. Bonorowo Wetlands 9: 86-101. The objective of this study was to determine the levels of heavy metals in tilapia and catfish species along Ruiru River. Sediments, water, and fish samples were collected using systematic random sampling techniques. Three sites were established at downstream of river, 1000 meters of Ruiru Town. The other three were established at upstream of river, 1000 meters of Ruiru Town. Fish samples were transported to the laboratory at National Museums of Kenya for identification. An atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used to examine metals. Fish gills and livers were also examined for histopathological changes. Using one-way analysis of variance, researchers analyzed data on heavy metal levels in water, sediments, and fish gills, livers and muscles. Correlation coefficients were also calculated to assess the relationship between fish length and weight and metal concentrations in fish liver, gills, and muscles, as well as between levels of heavy metals in water and in sediments. In April, 0.167±0.014 mg/L, August, 0.054±0.003 mg/L, and December, 0.222±0.101 mg/L (F = 2.10, p = 0.202), mean chromium levels in water were not statistically significant, but were statistically significant at the downstream sites 0.236±0.019 mg/L, 0.058±0.001 mg/L, and 0.222±0.101 mg/L during the three months (F = 125.63, p<0.001). Significant positive correlations between the levels of iron in sediments and water were found at both upstream and downstream sites, with r = 0.7319, p = 0.025, and r = 0.8506, p = 0.0037, respectively. The linkage between lead levels in sediments and water at upstream sites was not significant (r = 0.343, p = 0.366), while it was significant (r = 0.7523, p = 0.019) at downstream sites. Chromium levels in sediments and water at upstream sites indicated a positive but non-significant connection (r=0.5339, p=0.138). In the downstream sites, there was a substantial positive correlation between chromium levels in sediments and water (r = 0.9787, p<0.001). Metals accumulated in fish tissues in the following order: liver>gills>muscle, and Clarias gariepinus tissues from downstream sites exhibited higher amounts of metals than Oreochromis niloticus tissues from the same sites. In all tissues, both kinds of fish exhibited higher levels of iron than lead, with chromium being the lowest. The liver and gills of fish from the upstream research sites had normal features on histology. Hepatocytes with larger nuclei were found in the livers of fish from downstream sites. The secondary lamellae of the gills had degenerated and fused. Metal levels in sediments were found to be greater than in water, according to the study. Fish from the downstream sites also showed morphological alterations in the liver and gills. The study's findings suggest that people who eat such fish may be exposed to metal poisoning. The National Environment Management Authority should implement measures to reduce industrial trash flow into the Ruiru River, according to the report.

This study was based on to determine the concentration of macro and micro nutrients as well as toxic and nontoxic heavy metals present in the chicken feed available in Dhaka city of Bangladesh. All macro nutrients, if present in the feed at high concentration have some adverse effect, at the same time if this nutrient present in the feed at low concentration this have some adverse effect too. So that this nutrient level should be maintained at a marginal level. On the other side toxic heavy metals if present in the feed at very low concentration those can contaminate the total environment of the ecosystem. In this study six brand samples (starter, grower, finisher and layer) which was collected from different renowned chicken feed formulation industry in Bangladesh. Those samples were prepared for analysis by wet ashing and then metals were determined by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. It was found that 27.7 to 68.4, 57.3 to 121.9, 0.21 to 4.1, 0.32 to 2.1, 0.11 to 1.58, 0.28 to 2.11 and 0.28 to 1.78 for zinc, iron, copper, mercury, cadmium, nickel and cobalt respectively. It was found that essential macro and micro nutrients were present in the feed in low concentration on the other side mercury was present in high concentration in the feed samples.

Although St. Basil did not live 50 years, the topic of the old age appears in his works quite often. On the other hand, it is clear that Basil does not discuss this issue in one par­ticular work or in the longer argumentation. The fragmentary statements about old age can be found in almost all his works, but most of them can be found in the correspondence of Basil. In this paper we present the most important ad the most interesting aspect of teach­ing of Basil the Great. As these certificates show that the bishop of Caesarea looked at the old age maturely, rationally estimated passage of time, which very often makes a man different. He experienced it, for example as a spiritual and physical suffering, which often were connected with his person. He saw a lot of aspect of the old age, especially its advan­tages – spiritual maturity and wisdom. What is more, he pointed also to passage of time, which leads a man to eternity, which should be prepared to, regardless how old he is. In his opinion fear is not seen opinions of St. Basil present really Christian way of thinking, well-balanced and calm.

Abstract Sediment cores were collected in Lake St. Clair in 1985 and in the St. Clair River in 1986 to investigate the horizontal and vertical distribution and association of Hg in the sediments. A layer of recent sediment up to about 35 cm thick was differentiated by the geochemical composition and visual appearance from the underlying glacial-lacustrine deposits. The concentration of Hg in the surficial sediments in Lake St. Clair was lower in 1985 (&lt;0.025 to 1.200 µg/g) than that found in 1974 (&lt;0.20 to 3.00 µg/g). Up to 8.30 µg/g of Hg were found in the sediments collected from the nearshore area at Sarnia, Ontario, in the St. Clair River in 1986. The concentrations of Hg ranged from 5.05 to 16.00 µg/g in different sand-sized fractions (0.063 to 0.350 mm) of the sediment. The concentration of Hg was 17.80 µg/g in the silt-clay size fraction (&lt;0.063 mm). No relationship was found between the concentration of organic matter and Hg, and the concentration of silica and Hg in the St. Clair River sediments. The results indicated a relationship of Hg with particles of different mineralogical composition. Up to 3.72 µg/g Hg was found in the surface sediment in Chenal Ecarte. The greatest concentration of Hg (13.15 µg/g) existed in the 0.350 mm particle size fraction, which consisted mainly of small pieces of decaying wood. A good relationship was found between the concentration of Hg and organic matter in the sediment at this area.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the potential of ultrasound (US), alone or in combination with mild heating and/or EDTA towards reduction of As, Cd, I, and Hg content of Laminaria hyperborea. Concentrations of As, Cd, I, and Hg of 56.29, 0.596, 7340, and <0.01 mg kg−1 of dry weight, respectively, were found in L. hyperborea blades. Treatment with US at 50 °C increased approx. 2-fold the amount of As released, although did not affect significantly the content of Cd or I, as compared to control (no US) samples. Reducing the temperature to 8 °C significantly decreased the effect of US, but heating at 80 °C did not cause a significant effect as compared to treatments at 50 °C. On the other hand, treatment with 0.1 N EDTA at 50 °C enhanced the percentage of Cd released by approximately 7-fold, regardless of sonication. In the present work, the combination of US and EDTA at 50 °C for 5 min led to a significant reduction of the As (32%), Cd (52%) and I (31%) content in L. hyperborea, thus improving the product’s safety for consumers.

In order to decrease accidents of slips and falls, COFs of rubber samples with different surface roughness were measured by Brungraber Mark II. And the correlation coefficients between roughness parameters and COF were calculated. The rusults have shown that the COF increases with surface roughness and the correlation coefficient between Sq and COF is highest. In general, almost all the roughness parameters used in the study have high correlation with COF. Parameters had the highest correlation with COF depends on the materials used and test conditions.

Descriptions of larvae of Procladius denticulatus, Procladius culiciformis, Procladius freemani, and Procladius bellus collected from Yellowknife Bay (lat., 62°25′; long., 114°20′) are given. Procladius denticulatus was separated from the other species by its large size, a character which always proved distinctive. Procladius culiciformis and P. freemani were separated from one another through several measurements including those of the basal antennal segment and the basal palpal segment. Almost all characters of the head were useful in distinguishing the much smaller P. bellus from the other species.
