A mathematical model describing the combined anaerobic degradation of complex organic material, such as manure, and a lipid containing additive, such as olive oil mill effluents, has been developed based on a model previously described (Angelidaki et al. 1993). The model has been used to simulate anaerobic codigestion of cattle manure together with olive oil mill effluent (OME) and the simulations were compared with experimental data. Simulation data indicated that lack of ammonia, needed as nitrogen source for synthesis of bacterial biomass and as an important pH buffer, could be responsible for the problems encountered when anaerobic degradation of OME alone is attempted. It was shown that the amount of nitrogen needed to obtain a stable degradation of OME can be provided by manure during codigestion of OME and manure.

AbstractExperimental data, simulation, data analysis and visualisation require image file formats that are open source and able to contain and manage quantitative data. Quantification techniques bring the new challenge of managing image calibration parameters and formulas in an open and efficient format, compatible with routine microscopy workflows. A practical approach to quantitative image format is presented and discussed here, relying on open and extensible file formats - Tagged Image File (TIF) and Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP).

Sanitary landfills of municipal solid waste (MSW) might be used to reduce the storage volume required at plants giving year-round treatment of olive oil mill effluent (OME). A landfill in the methanogenic stage could act as an anaerobic filter and reduce the pollutional load of the OME while also acting as a temporary storage tank. In the present work, a lysimeter in pilot scale was used to simulate a cell of a sanitary landfill. It was filled with MSW screened by a 80 mm mesh sieve mixed to municipal sludge. Results show that when OME was spread on the top of the lysimeter at a loading rate not exceeding 0.4 kgCOD/d/m3 of reactor steady methanogenic activity was maintained in the layers of refuse and a 70% removal of COD was obtained in the OME leachate collected. Higher loading rates reduced methanogenic activity and COD removal efficiency. Nevertheless, the OME collected from the bottom of the landfill was more easily treated by anaerobic digestion than was the raw OME.

Abstract. We present our contribution to the geovisualization and visual analysis of hydraulic simulation data, based on an interdisciplinary research work undertaken by researchers in geographic information sciences and in hydraulics. The positive feedback loop between researchers favored the proposal of visualization tools enabling visual reasoning on hydraulic simulated data so as to infer knowledge on the simulation model. We interactively explore and design 2D multi-scale styles to render hydraulic simulated data, in order to support the identification over large simulation domains of possible local inconsistencies related to input simulation data, simulation parameters or simulation workflow. Models have been implemented into QGIS and are reusable for other input data and territories.

In this paper, the transverse momentum and maximum transverse momentum distributions of protons and pions produced in an event for CC collisions at 4.2 A GeV/c have been analyzed. This analysis is based on experimental data obtained from 2 m propane bubble chamber at Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna, Russia and simulation data obtained from Dubna cascade code. We observed three disparate zones for the transverse momentum distribution of the produced particles. The third zone where transverse momentum is greater than 0.375 GeV/c is restricted only for pions with transverse momentum approximately equal to 1 GeV/c, and for protons the restricted value of [Formula: see text] is [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]1.5 GeV/c. So contribution of pions to this region is less and decreases sharply than the contribution of protons. The results of cascade model are not fully compatible with the experimental results in the third [Formula: see text] region, as this region contains less number of particles for model data as compared with experimental data but is compatible in the case of [Formula: see text].

The influence of the wear of the rotor bar on its impact effect was investigated with FEM simulation. The effectiveness of FEM simulation on the research of impact force was verified through the comparison of experiment and simulation data. Simulation results showed that the wear of rotor bar has not so large influence on impact force. In its initial stage, the bar is worn easily, and the wear becomes slow with the wear increasing.

To investigate the mixing uniformity between tracer gas and gas stream in the duct, numerical simulations of the CO tracer gas and air mixing in a 300mm diameter and 90 degree elbow duct were performed on the commercial CFD software FLUENT, and the comparisons between the simulation results and experimental data were analyzed. Tracer gas is injected by 5-point discharge, the mixing uniformity between tracer gas and air is better than that of 1-point discharge. The results indicated that the tracer gas concentrations of simulations were agreed with the experimental data. Simulation results could provide a valuable guidance for gas flow rate measurement and online calibration for gas flowmeter with tracer gas technique.
