Abstract The open-source program Delft Dashboard (DDB) is a graphical user interface designed to quickly create, edit input parameters and visualize model inputs for a number of hydrodynamic models, using private or publicly available local and global datasets. It includes a number of toolboxes that facilitate the generation of spatially varying inputs. These include new model schematizations (grids, bathymetry, boundary conditions, etc.), cyclonic wind fields and initial tsunami waves. The use of DDB can have significant benefits. It can save modellers considerable time and effort. Furthermore, the automated nature of both data collection and pre-processing within the program reduces the likelihood of errors that could occur when setting up models manually. Three case studies are presented: simulation of tides in the North Sea, storm surge and wave modelling under tropical cyclone conditions and the simulation of a tsunami. The test cases show that models created with DDB can be set up efficiently while maintaining a predictive skill that is only slightly lower than that of extensively calibrated models.

Much of the material dredged from the port of Rotterdam is contaminated to such a degree that it must be placed in specially constructed sites. The aim of Rotterdam is to ensure that the dredged material will once again be clean. This will entail the thorough cleansing of the sources of the contamination of the sediment in the harbours and in the River Rhine. The Rotterdam Rhine Research Project (RRP) is one of the means to achieve this based on: technical research, legal research, public relations and dialogues with dischargers. The programme for five selected heavy metals is almost complete. For many heavy metal discharge points between Rotterdam and Rheinfelden, a specially devised independent load assessment has been carried out four times. Balance studies were used to determine the relative contributions of the point discharges to the total. Currently the results are being used in an attempt to negotiate agreements with a selected number of the major dischargers. At present, more detailed balance studies are being set up and exploratory measurements carried out for organic micropollutants. It may be concluded that the research is progressing successfully and methods and techniques developed seem satisfactory and broadly applicable. The Rhine Action Programme encompasses an international effort to improve the quality of the Rhine water. Although the RRP plays a modest complementary role to the Rhine Action Plan, there is no doubt of the value of this Rotterdam initiative. The mode of work followed in the RRP contains elements that can be of use in combatting the contamination of the North Sea by rivers other than the Rhine.

1. Diameter measurements of Rhizosolenia styliformis from the Antarctic, the subtropical Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and from the North Sea and neighbouring waters have made it appear necessary to set up two varieties, oceanica and semispina, in addition to the type of the species R. styliformis. The type as I describe it has been called var. longispina by Hustedt, but elsewhere it has often been figured as the var. oceanica of this paper. Var. semispina is synonymous with the form represented by Karsten as R. semispina Hensen. It differs from R. semispina as drawn by Hensen and its synonym R. hebetata forma semispina Gran, but is thought likely to be linked by intermediates. If this is so R. hebetata may have to be extended to include and suppress R. styliformis, as var. semispina is linked to the type by intermediates. Var. oceanica has no intermediate forms and, if R. hebetata is to be extended, this variety should be established as a separate species.2. Var. oceanica is absent from the southern North Sea and appears to be an indicator species related to oceanic inflow.3. Auxospore formation was observed for the type in the southern North Sea in 1935 and biometric observations suggest that a period of 3-4 years elapsed between the production of auxospore generations in that area. Outside the southern North Sea for the type, measurements give no indication of auxospore generations occurring at intervals exceeding a year. While auxospore formation has been seen in var. oceanica from the Shetlands area samples of June 1935 and July 1938, this phenomenon has not been observed for var. semispina.

The North Sea as a very shallow sea with high wind set-up effects is acting highly as extremely sensitive measuring equipment for climatic changes, especially for surge producing weather conditions. The flood disaster in the Netherlands 1953, in Germany 1962, the Adolph-Bermpohl-Orkan (1967), with mean wind speed of 37 ra/sec. over 5 hours, the strong continental storm with high damages in the forests from France till Poland in November 1972, a series of 6 heavy floods in November/ December 1973 and two extreme floods in January 1976 with the highest water levels ever registrated in the German bight are indications for some changes in meteorological conditions. In this paper some hypothetical models shall be introduced which are able to show how extreme storm surge frequencies and probabilities are changing with time.

There has been an increasing demand for onshore testing of equipment destined for offshore operation. The justification for this requirement can be summarized as follows: 1. High cost of offshore commissioning where even minor faults detected, constitutes potentially serious problems. 2. Consequenses of delay of platform start-up are enormous. 3. Skilled experienced personel and diagnostic equipment is available onshore, and rectification of new units will benefit from the existence of previous experience. 4. Spare and renewal parts availability. This paper describes the method for string testing of a 3 unit 60 mw utility gasturbine-generator power module built for the gullfaks A platform in the Norwegian sector of the north sea. It describes the test facility and test equipment set up and also the test program which was followed. At the time of writing the paper the test program was barely initiated, and for that reason the test results will be presented in the form of an addendum to this paper during the meeting.

The Cambridge Diagenesis Conferences (1981–1998) were set up to act as a conduit for the interchange of clay mineral expertise between universities and research institutes on one hand, and the hydrocarbon industry on the other. At the time, oil companies were dealing with the development of the North Sea Oil Province which was turning out to be a natural laboratory for the fundamental study of authigenic clay minerals and their relationship to lithofacies, burial, overpressure, reservoir quality and hydrocarbon emplacement. This symbiosis between industry and academia flourished for nearly two decades. Each conference was followed by a special issue of Clay Minerals dealing with topics relevant to, or discussed at the particular meeting. By the late 1990s the North Sea had become a mature province and the major oil companies were looking to other parts of the world to replenish their reserves.

A method for velocity and interface depth determination based on tomography of migrated common reflecting point (CRP) gathers is presented. The method is derived from the tomographic principle that relates traveltime change along a given ray to perturbations in slowness and layer depths. The tomographic principle is used to convert depth errors in migrated CRP gathers to time errors along a CRP ray pair and thus enable use of conventional traveltime tomography. It is also used to affect a very fast prestack migration and set up the tomography matrix. The velocity‐depth determination method uses the available offsets of all CRPs and inverts for the parameters of all layers simultaneously. Hand picking of depth errors on CRP gathers is avoided by a method where the tomography matrix operates directly on the migrated gathers. The velocity‐depth determination method is demonstrated on a synthetic example and on a field example from the North Sea.

Abstract Into the Community Multiscale Air Quality modeling system (CMAQ) that is widely used for simulating the transport and fate of air pollutants, a new module was inserted that accounts for the partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds—in particular, polycyclic organic hydrocarbons (PAHs)—between the gaseous and the particulate phases. This PAH version of CMAQ can at this time be applied to substances that are predominantly associated with particles and can be assumed to be inert, as is the case for benzo(a)pyrene [B(a)P]. The model was set up for Europe on a grid with 54-km cell width with a nest of 18-km gridcell width located around the North Sea to simulate ambient air concentrations and depositions of B(a)P in January, April, July, and October 2000. To evaluate the quality of the simulation results, daily and monthly mean concentrations were compared with measurements from six monitoring stations. The typical ratio of modeled to measured values is circa 4 (median), which—with respect to both measurement and simulation uncertainties and problems involved when comparing measurements with simulations—proved that the PAH version of CMAQ is suitable to simulate the fate and transport of B(a)P over Europe and can serve as a starting point for models for other PAHs that additionally consider degradation.

The increasing demand for renewable energy resources has promoted the construction of offshore wind farms e.g. in the North Sea. While the wind farm layout consists of an array of large turbines, the interrelation of wind turbine wakes with the remaining array is of substantial interest. The downstream spatial evolution of turbulent wind turbine wakes is very complex and depends on manifold parameters such as wind speed, wind direction and ambient atmospheric stability conditions. <br><br> To complement and validate existing numerical models, corresponding observations are needed. While in-situ measurements with e.g. anemometers provide a time-series at the given location, the merits of ground-based and space- or airborne remote sensing techniques are indisputable in terms of spatial coverage. Active microwave devices, such as Scatterometer and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), have proven their capabilities of providing sea surface wind measurements and particularly SAR images reveal wind variations at a high spatial resolution while retaining the large coverage area. Platform-based Doppler LiDAR can resolve wind fields with a high spatial coverage and repetition rates of seconds to minutes. In order to study the capabilities of both methods for the investigation of small scale wind field structures, we present a direct comparison of observations obtained by high resolution TerraSAR-X (TS-X) X-band SAR data and platform-based LiDAR devices at the North Sea wind farm alpha ventus. We furthermore compare the results with meteorological data from the COSMO-DE model run by the German Weather Service DWD. Our study indicates that the overall agreement between SAR and LiDAR wind fields is good and that under appropriate conditions small scale wind field variations compare significantly well.

The North Sea Consultation was set up to resolve conflicting claims for space in the North Sea. In 2020, this consultation process resulted in the North Sea Agreement, which was supported by the Dutch Parliament and cabinet as a long-term policy; however, the fishing sector felt excluded, left the consultation process, and does not support the agreement. Using semi-constructed interviews and the method of wide reflective equilibrium, this research found that in this conflict the metaphor of ‘health’ has played a decisive role. While all stakeholders want to keep the sea ‘healthy’, they disagree on what a healthy sea actually means, leading to contrastive positions on the desirability of trawler fishing, wind parks, and conservation areas—the North Sea Agreement’s main foci of interest. To prevent the unproductive escalation of such a conflict, it is inevitable to acknowledge the moral connotations of such metaphors, as this allows a decision-making process that can be considered more just.

The National Research Council's Committee on Disaster Studies sent us to England about two weeks after the North Sea flood of February 1, 1953, to set up a rather extensive comparative study of the flood's effects in several communities. Unfortunately, the larger study did not materialize and we were compelled to learn what we could by ourselves in about two weeks. The following report, therefore, must be regarded as very tentative. It deals with Kimbark1, one of the two flooded communities we were able to study.
