Linear water balance optimal operation models are common with relative short solution times but suffer from a lack of certainty whether the given solution is at all hydraulically feasible. Introducing hydraulic headloss, water leakage and changing pump energy consumption, effect the resulting system optimal operation but also create a non-linear problem due to the convex relation between flow, headloss, water leakage and total head. This study utilizes a methodology published by the authors for linearization of convex or concave equations. An iterative linear programming (LP) minimal cost optimal operation supply model is solved including the Hazen–Williams headloss equation, pressure related water leakage equation, changing pump energy consumption and source cost. The model is demonstrated using an example application. ‘Greater than’ or ‘less than’ water head constraints at nodes may force the system to maintain certain water levels in water tanks reducing the available operating volume forcing pumping stations to operate in peak tariff periods as less storage is available in low tariff periods. Operationally, reducing water leakage may be achieved by reducing water heads along the system by means of shifting pump operation periods and maintaining low water levels in water tanks. Source costs may serve as penalties or rewards discouraging or encouraging the use of certain water sources.

The main objective of this research was to produce a simulated model that permitted the evaluation of operating costs of commercial greenhouse tomato growers with respect to heating methods (hot air, hot water, radiant and heat pumps) and the use of artificial lighting for 1991 and 1992. This research showed that the main factors that negatively influence profitability were energy consumption during cold periods and the price of tomatoes during the summer season. The conventional hot water system consumed less energy than the heat pump system and produced marketable fruit yields similar to those from the heat pump system. The hot water system was generally more profitable in regards to energy consumption and productivity. Moreover, investment costs were less; therefore, this system gives best overall financial savings. As for radiant and hot air systems, their overall financial status falls between that of the hot water system and the heat pump. The radiant system proved to be more energy efficient that the hot air system, but the latter produced a higher marketable fruit yield over the 2-year study.

Abstract Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) plays a major role in worldwide energy consumption as a clean source of energy with low greenhouse gases emission. LPG transportation is exhibited through networks of pipelines, maritime, and tracks. LPG transmission using pipeline is environmentally friendly owing to the low greenhouse gases emission and low energy requirements. This work is a comprehensive evaluation of transportation petroleum gas in liquid state and compressible liquid state concerning LPG density, temperature and pressure, flow velocity, and pump energy consumption under the impact of different ambient temperatures. Inevitably, the pipeline surface exchanges heat between LPG and surrounding soil owing to the temperature difference and change in elevation. To prevent phase change, it is important to pay attention for several parameters such as ambient temperature, thermal conductivity of pipeline materials, soil type, and change in elevation for safe, reliable, and economic transportation. Transporting LPG at high pressure requests smaller pipeline size and consumes less energy for pumps due to its higher density. Also, LPG transportation under moderate or low pressure is more likely exposed to phase change, thus more thermal insulation and pressure boosting stations required to maintain the phase envelope. The models developed in this work aim to advance the existing knowledge and serve as a guide for efficient design by underling the importance of the mentioned parameters.

In order to meet the demand of emergency water supply in the northern region without affecting normal water transfer, considering the use of the existing South-to-North Water Transfer eastern route project to explore the potential of floodwater resource utilization in the flood season of Hongze Lake and Luoma Lake in Jiangsu Province, this paper carried out relevant optimal operating research. First, the hydraulic linkages between the lakes were generalized, then the water resources allocation mode and the scale of existing projects were clarified. After that, the actual available amount of flood resources in the lakes was evaluated. The average annual available floodwater resources in 2003–2017 was 1.49 billion m3, and the maximum available capacity was 30.84 billion m3. Then, using the floodwater resource utilization method of multi period flood limited water levels, the research period was divided into the main flood season (15 July to 15 August) and the later flood season (16 August to 10 September, 11 September to 30 September) by the Systematic Clustering Analysis method. After the flood control calculation, the limited water level of Hongze Lake in the later flood season can be raised from 12.5 m to 13.0 m, and the capacity of reservoir storage can increase to 696 million m3. The limited water level of Luoma Lake can be raised from 22.5 m to 23.0 m (16 August to 10 September), 23.5 m (11 September to 30 September), and the capacity of reservoir storage can increase from 150 to 300 million m3. Finally, establishing the floodwater resource optimization model of the lake group with the goals of maximizing the floodwater transfer amount and minimizing the flood control risk rate, the optimal water allocation scheme is obtained through the optimization algorithm.

Modern hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) like the fourth generation of Toyota Prius incorporate multiple planetary gears (PG) to interconnect various power components. Previous studies reported that increasing the number of planetary gears from one to two reduces energy consumption. However, these studies did not compare one PG and two PGs topologies at their optimal operation. Moreover, the size of the powertrain components are not the same and hence the source of reduction in energy consumption is not clear. This paper investigates the effect of the number of planetary gears on energy consumption under optimal operation of the powertrain components. The powertrains with one and two PGs are considered and an optimal simultaneous torque distribution and mode selection strategy is proposed. The proposed energy management strategy (EMS) optimally distributes torque demands amongst the power components whilst also controlling clutches (i.e., mode selection). Results show that increasing from one to two PGs reduces energy consumption by 4%.

Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city is a strategic cooperation project between China and Singapore to improve the living environment and build an eco-culture. Animation-park covers an area of 1 km2, with a total construction area of 7.7x105m2. Wide sources of the renewable energy, such as solar hot water system, ground source heat pump system, solar PV power generation system, and deep geothermal energy system, is strongly recommended to use in eco-city in order to save energy and protect the environment. The usage of renewable energy is seen as a complement to the conventional energy. The energy consumption of the animation park is 42926tce of coal per year, and the renewable energy that used is 4573.6tce of coal per year. The usage of renewable energy leads to the reduction in the emission of CO2 of 18895.9t per year.

AbstractBore-hole drilling techniques have been used to connect with the subglacial water system of the temperate South Cascade Glacier. The water level in a connecting bore hole probably represents a direct measurement of the basal water pressure over an area at least to m in extent. Fluctuations of up to 40 m in bore-hole water levels occur typically over periods of several days and often peak about 2 d after large changes in water input at the glacier surface. The long-term trend in bore-hole water levels supports the idea of seasonal storage and release of liquid water.
