Damage of the waterproofing system in a waste material depository or sewage sludge composting plant and the penetration of pollutants into the soil and groundwater may cause an environmental mishap. Although the standard waterproofing technologies are extremely safe, one cannot disregard possible malfunctions. For a well-established plan of managing unexpected events, the impact of such damage must be forecast. With the help of models described in the relevant literature, we propose the basic ideas used in simulations for two planned regional waste material depositories, a planned sewage sludge composting plant and an active aluminium dross depository of a foundry.

In the south-east of France, the evacuation of stormwater by infiltration into the ground is being developed for large aquifer systems such as the ground water in the Rhône valley and in the eastern part of Lyons. A study proposal has been presented to the water management department of the conurbation of Lyons, aimed at quantifying, within a reasonably short space of time, the effects, in terms of transport of pollutants, of the stormwater infiltration system in the underground water in eastern Lyons. To this end, a one year duration experiment was carried out on the Vénissieux infiltration basin which drains stormwater from a 380 hectares industrial catchment area. Its peculiar configuration also made it possible to acquire new knowledge on the qualitative operation of a few pretreatment facilities. After describing the operation of the basin and the experimental protocol, we shall present a body of data that we monitored and our conclusions about the behaviour of the pollution throughout the facilities. Then, we present methods used to assess the pollution removal performance of the infiltration basin and its pretreatment devices, the results obtained, and our conclusions about the impact of the infiltration basin on groundwater and soil.

The main aim of the study was to investigate the impact of recruitment policies and induction programmes on employee retention. The Durban Central Fire Station was used as a case study for this investigation. Relevant literature from periodicals, journals, textbooks, theses and dissertations was reviewed. A quantitative research design was adopted for this study through the administration of a pre-coded structured closed-ended questionnaire to the 126 employees at the Durban Central Fire Department. Only 110 of the 126 administered questionnaires were returned. However, of the returned questionnaires, 5 were discarded due to incomplete responses and the final questionnaire returns numbered 105, which resulted in an 83.3% response rate. The data collected from respondents were analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24.0 in order to conduct non-parametric tests for testing the generated hypotheses. In total, 13 hypotheses were formulated for this study’s empirical analysis. Furthermore, the Pearson’s Chi-square and Spearman correlation tests were carried out on the formulated hypotheses to ascertain whether a statistically significant relationship existed between the variables. The study’s notable findings showed that a positive relationship existed between recruitment policies and employee retention, hence recruitment policies do have an impact on employee retention. The findings also showed that a moderately significant relationship existed between induction programmes and employee retention at the Durban Central Fire Department. Based on the findings, the researcher then recommended that the Durban Central Fire department should clarify expectations to its employees, encourage socialisation and positive work relationships, increase the duration of the induction programme and conduct exit interviews. The researcher concluded the study with suggestions for future research.

The study aimed at exploring the impact of information literacy on maize production and focused on a case study of small-scale farmers in Inonge village of Kanzungula District in Southern Province, Zambia. Besides the review of relevant literature, the study conducted a questionnaire-based case study on 20 small-scale farmers and conducted an in-depth interview with one agriculturalist from the Ministry of Agriculture. The analysis of the study showed that farmers need information for various purposes to enhance their agricultural activities, and they use different sources and media to access such information. Many of the farmers, however, are not well aware of modern techniques of agriculture and they seldom use such techniques for farming. Due to some problems such as high rate of illiteracy, inadequate contact with agricultural extension officers, language barrier and bad television and radio reception, farmers are not satisfied in getting agricultural information. The paper concludes that information literacy has an effect on maize production and certain recommendations for policy, practice and further research have been provided for the improvement of information literacy of the farmers in Inonge village. These include government to reconsider public agricultural policy reforms on one hand and for the local communities and their leaderships to reorganize themselves and tackle the information challenges facing them on the other.  More focused research was still needed to understand and contextualize Inonge village agricultural challenges and prospects.

Spent coffee ground (SCG) may affect wastewater treatment processes due to high coffee consumption worldwide. The impact of the main chemical compounds present in SCG on respiration activity of sewage sludge was investigated. The results showed approximately two times higher respiration in the samples where various types of SCG were present in comparison with samples without SCG. During intense microbial metabolism, statistically significant (p < 0.05) decreases in caffeine, total polyphenols, and chlorogenic acid contents after processing and in filtrate was observed. The monitored compounds (caffeine, polyphenols, and chlorogenic acid) deteriorated due to their probable inclusion in microbiological metabolism. Increase in respiration activity of microorganisms in the presence of cheap waste material such as coffee grounds can help to improve wastewater treatment. The research was focused on spent coffee grounds’ impact on the respiratory activity of microorganisms in the activated sludge taken from small and large wastewater treatment plants. The impact was measured in more detail due to the inclusion of different coffee species (Robusta and Arabica) in diverse concentrations. The novelty of the study can also be seen through the literature overview, where information cannot be found about SCG influence on the respiration activity of microbial communities, and data on the possible SCG aerobic degradation or utilization by a sewage sludge bacterial consortium has also never been reported. The study has shown the possibility of improving wastewater treatment due to respiration activity of microorganisms in the presence of cheap waste material such as coffee grounds.

In order to improve the work on investment estimate of municipal bridge project,the paper screens the impact factor of municipal bridge project investment estimation to build municipal bridge project investment estimation model. It regards hollow plate girder bridge as the research object.It obtains the initial set of impact factor affecting municipal bridge project investment model by analyzing the relevant literature using the method of information precipitation.And it screens out 10 feasibility impact factor set by analyzing the data collected by the questionnaire with membership degree analysis.
