Abstract Groundwater wells are critical drinking water infrastructure elements that widely support basic system supply needs while also providing supply reliability, better water quality (in some cases), and comparatively lower operational costs. Well rehabilitation and replacement are thus an area where water utilities could benefit from rational decision support frameworks and quantitative tools that enable them to better navigate the complex trade-off relationship(s) that exist among a variety of environmental quality, public health, financial, regulatory, organizational, and technological dimensions. Consistent with these considerations, a business risk-based prioritization tool was developed for this study that augments/extends California Water Service (Cal Water)'s well rehabilitation and the replacement decision-making process. For this derivation, a business risk exposure methodology is combined with an analytical hierarchy process (AHP), with the AHP being utilized to determine the weights of the factors involved in the likelihood of failure and the consequence of failure calculation. It is expected that the new tool will assist in optimizing inspection and action plans and identify the wells requiring attention and/or additional work for water utilities.

The paper investigates how different hierarchy structuring in analytic hierarchy process (AHP) may affect the final results in the decision-making process. This problem is analyzed in a case study of the Rila monastery forest stands in Bulgaria. There were three similar and mutually overlapped hierarchies defined. A decision maker evaluated all of them and after analyzing final results and consistency performance, he selected and revised the most appropriate hierarchy structure. Consistency check assisted in detecting the judgments which have strongly violated evaluation procedure. These mistakes are interpreted as a consequence of a large number of required pair-wise comparisons. The paper emphases the importance of properly defining hierarchy structure and recommends using consistency analysis as a guide and not as a directive for the revision of judgments.

This article aims to propose a model to determine the best allocation of financial resources for business risk management, permitting the risk manager to define a control policy with reduced costs that reaches a desired control target. The problem of study is presented as an issue of optimization of costs, formulated as a model of whole linear programming, which basic restrictions are associated to the demanded levels of control. The proposed model is applied to a problem of resource allocation for the control of operational costs. The results show that the model is an adequate instrument to better allocate financial resources, which its use proportionates better conditions for the decision process of business risks.

The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is a structured technique for organizing and analyzing complex decisions, based on mathematics and psychology. The method was developed by Thomas L. Saaty in the 1970s and has been extensively studied and refined since then. It has particular application in group decision making and is used around the world in a wide variety of decision situation. Rather than prescribing a "correct" decision, the AHP helps decision makers choose one that best suits their goal and their understanding of the problem. The technique provides a comprehensive and rational framework for structuring a decision problem, for representing and quantifying its elements, for relating those elements to overall goals, and for evaluating alternative solutions. Decision making is the choice of one alternative, from two or more, to which the course of the activity is directed and the problem is solved. The decision-making process is a rational attempt by the manager to achieve the goals of the organizational unit. The decision-making process can be thought of as a "brain and nervous system" of an enterprise. Decisions are made when a person wants things to be different in the future. Given each specific situation, making the right decisions is probably one of the most difficult challenges for managers. Managers in day-to-day work deliver programmed and unprogrammed decisions that solve simple or complex problems. Simple decisions have an impact on the short-term performance of the enterprise, and complex decisions have an impact on the long-term future and success of the enterprise. Users of the AHP first decompose their decision problem into a hierarchy of more easily comprehended sub-problems, each of which can be analyzed independently. Once the hierarchy is built, the decision makers systematically evaluate its various elements by comparing them to each other two at a time, with respect to their impact on an element above them in the hierarchy. The AHP converts these evaluations to numerical values that can be processed and compared over the entire range of the problem. In this article, it is explained the application of the AHP method in order to evaluate and promote employees in the enterprise "X" with several criteria. The obtained results enable the manager to evaluate the employees in an objective way and make an objective decision for their promotion. Its application for selecting the best among employees, in their assessment and promotion, allows managers to use a specific and mathematical tool to support the decision. This tool not only supports and qualifies decisions, it also allows managers to justify their choice, as well as to simulate possible results.

Modern mining activities are very intense in capital use, highly mechanized and as a consequence, present high operational costs. In this sense the appeal for managing operational variables adequately is very attractive since these have a huge impact in the overall costs. Reportedly, one of the most expensive mining activities is the transportation of in situ material to its destination. In this regard, the correct management of the important operational variables coupled with the experience gathered in mining operations, allowed the development of a computer system aimed at helping to achieve these management objectives. This paper describes the relation between measurable variables and economic parameters obtained in one important large scale Brazilian mine and how they interact and relate to each other in order to facilitate the decision making process.

Indonesia’s characteristics as an archipelagic state along with the increase of traditional and non-traditional threats in Indonesia require the ownership of military amphibious aircraft to oversee its maritime territories and perform logistics distribution to remote areas with minimum accessibility, especially its outermost islands. This study applied a combination of analytic hierarchy process (AHP), Political, Economic, Social, Techonology, Environment, and Legal (PESTEL) and Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, and Threat (SWOT) analysis to conduct a structured, systematic, measurable, and comprehensive decision-making process for selecting military amphibious aircraft and prescribe strategic recommendations on the acquisition plan. By using 3 criteria, 14 sub-criteria, and 3 alternative aircraft models, the results of AHP analysis showed that the Beriev Be-200 aircraft are the most preferred aircraft by the Indonesian users. The results of PESTEL-SWOT analysis show that good diplomatic relations between Indonesia and the manufacturer’s country of origin, users’ support to the plan, and user’s ability to adapt in operating and maintaining the aircraft support this decision. Meanwhile, limited fiscal capacity and domestic aircraft maintenance facilities/depots, as well as the risk of spare parts scarcity, have to be addressed for Indonesia to acquire its own military amphibious aircrafts.

The mango seed was extracted to starch via distillation, alkaline, sedimentation and centrifugation methods. Based on the analysis, different starch extraction methods resulted in different proximate composition, physicochemical, morphological, structural, functional and thermal properties of starch. As such, it is necessary to choose a suitable starch extraction method to fabricate starch-based film for packaging application. Therefore, in this study, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method was applied for performing the decision-making process. Based on the AHP method, it was found that, the best alternative for starch-based films is distillation method.

In this paper, a quantitative multicriteria futuristic fuzzy decision hierarchy (MFFDH)-based SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis has been carried out to determine priorities among significant factors related to tourism's internal and external environment. In MFFDH model, the fuzzy logic is combined with analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to overcome the uncertainty in decision making process. The utilization of MFFDH with SWOT yields analytically determined priorities for the factors included in SWOT analysis and makes them more commensurable. The hybrid method has been applied in connection with a case study on tourism industry in Agra (India) and result indicates that the factors related to tourism's internal environment (strengths and weaknesses) are relatively more important than external factors (opportunities and threats). In addition, strengths group turned out to have the highest priorities while threats group have the lowest priorities.

The aim of the research was to create a decision-making model, which would be able to support planning, organizing and conducting the dredging works in the port area. The proposed solution is a multiple element system which enables to verify, in a comprehensive way, the majority of the aspects determining the quality and the time of dredging enterprise realization. The paper presents an original approach to the decision-making process during the organization of dredging works, using the computer program. In order to achieve the main goal of the study, the conditions of dredging works were considered. Furthermore, the factors that have an influence on the schedule of the project were evaluated and algorithms, as well as process organization schemes, were developed. If it is not enough, the decision models corresponding to the discussed issue were analysed and the computer program was created. And last but not the least, the proposed project and equipment were verified using a simulation model. While creating this model, the method of multiple criteria AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) decision support was used. Moreover, the mass service model with the priority queue regulations, the expert study, and statistical analysis of the traffic flow, were provided. The model was developed in reliance to multiple criteria studies, based on the opinions of multinational experts. These enabled to adjust each element of the system in accordance with various locations. As a result of the research, the following thesis has been proven, that detailed analysis of the conditions of dredging works and taking into account the received conclusions enables to reduce the costs and shorten the time of dredging projects realizations.
