This experiment was conducted to determine the effects of different sowing dates (5th October, 20th October, 5th November, and 20th November) and sowing depths (2, 4, 6 and 8 cm) on yield and some yield characters in two rowed barley (cv. Tokak 157/37) under rainfed conditions. The field study was conducted in Kirsehir ecological condition during 2014-15 and 2015-16 winter growing seasons. Grain yield and important yield traits such as plant height, spike length, number of fertile spike per square meter, number of grain per spike and grain weight per spike were determined. Sowing dates and depths influenced significantly the grain yield and yield components in two consecutive years. Most of the yield components were adversely affected by deeper sowing depths and delayed sowing dates. Based on two-year average, the highest grain yield was recorded with 2733 kg ha-1 at 20th October sowing date and 4 cm depth; in contrast the lowest grain yield was 513 kg ha-1 by the 20th November and 8 cm depth. Keywords: Cereals, Hordeum vulgare, crop production, dryland, arid agriculture, seedling emergence, grain yield.

N fertilization has a substantial influence on sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) seed yield and quality. It was also well established that high-yielding sunflower hybrids had more N requirement than old cultivars such as open-pollinated ones. However, in Turkey, no sufficient information regarding the response of new developed oilseed sunflower hybrids to nitrogen fertilization under irrigated conditions. Therefore, a 2-year study was conducted to determine the effects of nitrogen application rates on the growth, yield, and yield components of two oilseed sunflower hybrids (AS-508 and Super 25) under irrigated conditions. In this study, all plant parameters were significantly influenced by applied nitrogen fertilizer rates. Yield response to nitrogen rates was positive and linear. Our research data indicated that under irrigated conditions N rate of 120 kg/ha was adequate for sunflower production in this region.

A field experiment was carried out to study the influence of sowing times on yield and yield components of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Seeds of four barley cultivars (BB 1, Karan 19, Karan 163 and Karan 351) were sown with four sowing times (5 November, 17 November, 29 November and 11 December). Most of the yield and yield components were significantly highest in 17 November sowing. Among the cultivars most of the characters showed their highest values in BB 1 and the lowest in Karan 19. Harvest index was found highest in Karan 351 and lowest in BB 1. Key words: Barley, Sowing time, Yield.   doi: 10.3329/jbs.v15i0.2154   J. bio-sci. 15: 139-145, 2007

SUMMARYThe effects of homozygous and heterozygous loci of 20 seedling lethal mutants on yield and yield components of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) were studied. Nine of the 20 populations studied exhibited one locus heterosis (positive or negative advantages of Aa genotype compared with AA genotype) for yield per plant or one or more components of yield. In five instances of significance all showed positive single locus (Aa) heterosis for number of seeds per spike. Seedling lethal mutants, Ac ac and Alb,, p alb,, p showed three yield-component-heterosis. These two mutants might be suitable for hybrid barley production.
