<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p><p>The reuse of historic buildings for the purpose of protection is an important tool in the preservation of the historic buildings. With this understanding of protection, the building continues its life and, at the same time, economic and cultural continuity is ensured. In this study, Sarı Ev which have been refunctioned today and known as Rize Museum, reflecting architectural texture of Eastern Black Sea and representing the architectural heritage of the city, has been evaluated in the context of reutilization. The aim of the study is to draw attention to the importance of function selection in reuse by showing this structure, which originally used to function as a house, that can be compatible with the new function. The aim of the study is to draw attention to the importance of function selection in reuse by showing this structure, which originally used to function as a house, that can be compatible with the new function. The suitability of the structure considering its spatial and functional requirements for reuse has been assessed. The adaptation of the building to its new function was examined by the observation and spatial analysis method and evaluated qualitatively. The result of the evaluation showed that the original spatial installations of the construction were adaptable to the new function with very little intervention. In this study, a positive example of the proper function selection for the reuse of construction has been presented and emphasized as an important way for preservation in the face of rapidly changing circumstances of present conditions.</p><p><strong>Öz</strong></p><p>Tarihi yapıların koruma amaçlı olarak yeniden kullanımı, yapıların sahip olduğu değerlerin korunmasında önemli bir araçtır.

Underlining the architectural characterization of a historic edifice is an essential tool towards its preservation and needs to be seen critically. Though the concept of heritage preservation is relatively a new phenomenon, yet it is widely accepted due to the recognition of heritage as an economic asset. Historic buildings are the strength of a nation that helps in building its identity as they reflect on the past, history and culture of a nation. For instance in Pakistan the sites such as Moen-jo-Daro and Thakh-i-Bahi are cherished, as they signify the value of empires that once dwelled, hence expresses a strong nostalgic value. Though these examples are on the World Heritage list, thus they have enough protection and monitoring system, but the rest of the national or provincial level historic properties suffer greatly due to the rapid transformation, resulting from an ever increasing commercialization pressure. This pressure directly and indirectly affects the heritage enclaves. Historic buildings specifically are subjected to destruction, deteriorating to a state in which they are not able to justify the purpose for which they were primarily built. Mitha Ram Hostel in Karachi is one such example, which is still surviving and is operative, but has had a change of function. Moreover there is lack of permanent institutional setup or any sort of partnership with the government, hence not many conservation exercises are seen in the country (Mumtaz, 2017). Apart from the institutional setup, community being the primary stakeholder, plays a vital role in safeguarding the heritage. But regrettably majority of the community defies any interest in conserving these buildings. Some of the restoration measures stop damage to heritage buildings but are not satisfactory to prolong the lifespan of the buildings. Thus, a need for a proper conservation plan cannot be denied. Mitha Ram Hostel, is an exceptional piece of architectural marvel that the city of Karachi has as a reminiscent of the colonial past. The hostel structure was built during the phase of 1894 and 1901 in pre-partition era, hence British colonial features are predominantly visible in the building. The structure was built to facilitate the out stationed pupils of the Dayaram Jethumal (DJ) Science College and was designed by Architect James Strachan who is credited with designing the most important structures the city offers at present day. The Serai Quarter, where this hostel is located, represents the old prevailing colonial architectural heritage in Karachi and holds over two hundred protected properties, but the enormity of this hostel surpasses the rest. The present state of conservation of the building is partly maintained, however, it was notified as a protected heritage on the provincial level by the Department of Culture, Government of Sindh, having enlistment number 1995-152. This provided it with an addition protection. This, along with the Jinnah Courts Hostel has been taken over by the law enforcement agencies, depriving the key educational institutions of their asset of edification. This research paper inspects the distinct architectural character of the hostel structure, and aims to analyze the diminishing hostel culture within the Quarter. The paper concludes with the concern of conserving the hostel structure as a forgotten architectural heritage of Pakistan, which otherwise is highly neglected in the third world context. - Unlike other great cities of Europe, Budapest did not experience any significant urban development before the nineteenth century, especially before 1867, the year of the foundation of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. After that, the city became the second pole, after Vienna, of this important European state. The capital of the Kingdom of Hungary grew through the use of various types of urban architecture and especially through a "style" that was meant to express Hungarian national identity. Architects, engineers, and other professionals from Hungary and Austria contributed to this process of modernization as well as many foreigners from Germany, France and England. The city's master plan - modeled after Paris's - focused on the area crossed by the Viale Sugár [Boulevard of the Spoke] was set on the Parisian model and so covered only certain parts of the city. The Committee on Public Works (1870-1948) played a leading role in putting the plan approved in 1972 - into effect in all aspects of urban planning, architecture and infrastructure.

The article discusses how to test the functionality of air insulations designed for the floor ventilation in historic buildings and follows on from the previously published articles. A flow analysis is being performed on an object of the City of Zirovnice which has been registered in the list of cultural monuments and was built as a brewery in the years 1589-1592 on the site of an older medieval building. The foundations and external brickwork consist mostly of stone. This article brings new air flow readings. The aim of the article is to analyse in detail the air flow in a specific floor void with the aid of modern CFD programs and experimental measurements using the ALMEMO device.

In recent years, the use of hydraulic lime in conservation and restoration of historic buildings has increased due to the pathological processes involved in the use of Portland cement. This investigation determines the properties of hydraulic lime mortars with added carbon fibers for their possible use in restoration of architectural heritage. The results obtained are compared with mortars to which glass and basalt fibers have been added. The results show that the fibers affect significantly the behaviour of the mortar. Although the fibers have a negative impact in the workability and increase the air void content, they improve significantly the mechanical strengths. Although no relevant differences have been found in the pre-cracking behaviour, it has been proven that the fibers avoid a fragile behaviour of the mortar, showing a better post-cracking behaviour. Mortars with carbon fibers are the ones that show the best performance, increasing the toughness up to 12080% over the reference mortars.

<p>This thesis anticipates that inner city car parking buildings will become vacant as new car ownership models, such as car sharing, reduce the number of cars parked in cities. “Collaborative consumption” is changing the way that consumers own goods to a shared method where ownership is outsourced and goods become cheaper and more efficient to use. Car sharing is one such service where technology provides the basis for it to operate. High demand for housing in the Wellington CBD and a current housing stock shortfall provides an opportunity to adaptively re-use this vacant infrastructure for time share housing for transient workers, using the collaborative consumption model.  This research proposes that the conversion of carparking buildings into shared housing schemes is valid, and explores this by investigating what the consequences of car sharing might be on the city and how people interact with this infrastructure at a street scale. The thesis then explores the architectural possibility of how housing can make use of existing infrastructure for a new use. It explores the pedestrian reclamation of the parking building while acknowledging the architectural heritage of the car parking typology.</p>
