The implications of decision analysis (DA) on engineering design are well known. Recently, the authors proposed decision topologies (DT) as a visual method for making design decisions and proved that they are consistent with normative decision analysis. This paper addresses the practical issue of assessing DTs for a decision maker (DM) using their responses, particularly under uncertainty. This is critical to encoding decision maker preferences so that further analysis and mathematical optimization can be performed using the correct set of preferences. We show how multiattribute DTs can be directly assessed from DM responses. Four methods are shown to evolutionarily assess DTs among which one that requires the DM to rank alternatives and another where a utility function is first assessed. It is also shown that preferences under uncertainty can be easily incorporated. In addition, we show that topologies can be constructed using single attribute topologies similarly to multi-linear functions in utility analysis. This incremental construction simplifies the process of topology construction. The reverse problem of inferring single attribute DTs is also presented. The proposed assessment methods are used on a design decision making problem of a welded beam.

A group decision must be made when a design process is conducted by more than one person. In this situation, negotiation plays an important role in many design decision. Value Management (VM) is one of design decision methodology in construction. By involving multi disciplines, collaboration and teamwork, negotiation becomes an important role on VM using a value-based group design decision. This paper provides an approach to develop a conceptual model of agreement options for group decision in building wall system selection using value criteria which are function and cost. The characteristic of value criteria has not been applied on previous researches. Existing models which are commonly accepted are optimization-based models, for example aggregation methods, but these are not able to solve the problem of value criteria on VM. Group decision needs to identify the goals that can be optimized and those that can be compromised in order to reach an agreement among decision makers. Agreement options are determined by identifying the potential decision makers followed by determining the optimal solution for each sub-group. Five stages are conducted to identify and determine agreement options as a conceptual model which are determining the weighting factor of criteria for each decision maker; grading alternative for each evaluation criteria; scoring every alternative for every decision maker; determining the optimal solution; and determining the fitness factor of an alternative solution The agreement option model is facilitated to better design decision. The model developed in this research can be used for any development research on group decision and negotiation in design process within the construction industry. Future research in the application of this methodology in many field of decision will build a wide range of knowledge to solve the theoretical and practical gap between automated design and automated negotiation.

Product packaging design is often produced through the practical application of tacit knowledge, rule of thumb and professional connoisseurship. Stakeholders are becoming increasingly demanding that design practitioners provide clarity of reasoning and accountability for their design proposals. Therefore, a better framework for the design of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) is required. This paper proposes a comprehensive taxonomy of ‘design considerations’ to assist the development of low involvement FMCG packaging and aid in rationale communication for design solutions. 302 academic sources were reviewed, inductive content analysis performed to code topics and output validation with academic and industry experts (n=9) through a modified-Delphi card sorting method. The research provides movement towards a comprehensive framework and common dialogue between stakeholders, practitioners and managers to assist in more effectively communicating the value that design can offer to FMCGs. The constructed taxonomy provides a set of 156 ‘design considerations’ to support in objective and informed design decision-making.

This paper addresses the fields of social and service design in development contexts, practice-based and constructive design research. A framework for social design for services will be explored through the survey of existing literature, specifically by drawing on eight doctoral theses that were produced by the World Design research group. The work of World Design researcher-designers was guided by a strong ethos of social and service design for development in marginalised communities. The paper also draws on a case study in Namibia and South Africa titled ‘My Dream World’. This case study presents a good example of how the social design for services framework functions in practice during experimentation and research in the field. The social design for services framework transfers the World Design group’s research results into practical action, providing a tool for the facilitation of design and research processes for sustainable development in marginal contexts.

Which can be applied to large data. In addition, the application of Big Data has been analyzed, using the Decision Maker working on big data and using enlightened information for different applications.
