The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between the oxidative status and the severity and type of anemia in dogs. A total of 70 dogs of various breeds, ages and of both sexes were enrolled in the study. Fifty dogs with anemia were classified according to the severity of anemia as mildly (n=18), moderately (n=18) or severely (n=14) anemic on the basis of the hematocrit (HCT) value. Anemia in the same dogs was also classified according to the type as regenerative (n=26) or non-regenerative (n=24) on the basis of the absolute reticulocyte count. Twenty dogs were used as healthy control. Total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and malondialdehyde (MDA) values in plasma as well as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and catalase (CAT) activities in erythrocyte hemolysate were measured to evaluate the oxidative status. The plasma TOS value was increased in all anemic dogs, irrespective of the severity of anemia, whereas a significant increase in the TAC value and a significant decrease in erythrocyte GSH-Px activity were observed in mild and moderate anemia. Plasma TOS and TAC values were higher in dogs with both types of anemia when compared to the healthy group. A significant increase in plasma MDA concentration and a significant decrease in GSH-Px activity were observed in the non-regenerative anemia group. There were moderate negative correlations between HCT and TOS values in the mild anemia group and between HCT and erythrocyte GSH-Px activity in the regenerative anemia group. In conclusion, oxidative stress develops in dogs with anemia, and it is largely independent of the severity and type of anemia. These results suggest that further studies with different etiologies may also be useful for evaluating the efficacy of antioxidants administered at different doses and in different combinations to treat anemia in dogs.

Objective The present study aimed to assess the global oxidant and antioxidant status in infants born to preeclamptic mothers and their correlation with cardiac functions. Study Design We compared 40 infants born to preeclamptic mothers with 40 premature infants born to normotensive mothers. We assessed the relationship between echocardiographic measurements and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and total oxidant status (TOS) values. Results In the study group, TAC, TOS, and oxidative stress index (OSI) levels were significantly higher in the cord blood (p = 0.03, 0.04, and 0.039, respectively) than in the control group. We did not observe any correlation between echocardiographic measurements and TAC, TOS, and OSI levels in infants born to preeclamptic mothers. Conclusion Compared with the control group, despite higher TAC levels in infants born to preeclamptic mothers, concurrent elevated OSI levels reveal that the oxidant–antioxidant balance is disturbed in favor of oxidants. Furthermore, the findings of this study suggest that echocardiographic parameters are unaffected by the oxidant status.

INTRODUCTION:In the present study, we investigated the relationship between potency of oxidative stress and BPH and this may assist to contribute to the realistic explanation of the ethiopathogenesis of BPH.METHODS:Seventy four newly diagnosed men with BPH (mean age: 54+/-11.2), who had not undergone any previous treatment for BPH, and 62 healthy volunteers (mean age: 55+/-14) were enrolled in the present study. To determine the antioxidative status of plasma, total antioxidant capacity (TAC) was calculated, and to determine the oxidative status of plasma (TOS) total peroxide levels were measured. The ratio of TAC to total peroxide was accepted as an indicator of oxidative stress (OSI). Data are presented as mean SD +/- unless specified. Student t-test and correlation analyses were used to evaluate the statistical significance differences in the median values recorded for all parameters between BPH and control group.RESULTS:Plasma TAC TOS were found in patients and controls (1.70 +/- 0.32, 1.68 +/- 0.19 micromol Trolox Equiv./L), (12.48 +/- 1.98, 12.40 +/- 1.14 micromol / L) respectively. OSI was calculated as 7.57 +/- 1.91, 7.48 +/- 1.33, respectively. Plasma TAC, TOS and OSI levels were not found to be significantly difference between patients and control subjects (p>0.05, p>0.05, p>0.05).CONCLUSIONS:The present study has shown that there were not relationship between potency of oxidative stress and BPH. Further well designed studies should be planned to find out whether the oxidative stress-related parameters play role in BPH as an interesting pathology in regard of the etiopathogenesis. Keywords: benign prostatic hyperplasia, oxidative stress, prostate

Aim. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between iron deficiency anemia and small for gestational age (SGA) in early third trimester pregnancies. Methods. A total of 4800 pregnant women who met the inclusion criteria were analyzed retrospectively. We included pregnant women who had iron deficiency anemia between 26+0 and 30+0 weeks of gestation and delivered singletons between 37+0 and 41+6 weeks of gestation. Patients were divided into four groups according to anemia level: (1) hemoglobin (Hb) < 7 mg/dl (n = 80), (2) Hb 7–9.9 mg/dl (n = 320), (3) Hb 10–10.9 mg/dl (n = 1300), and (4) Hb > 11 mg/dl (n = 3100, control group). The primary outcome of this study was the presence of SGA. Results. The demographic and obstetric characteristics were similar among all the groups. Maternal age, BMI <30 kg/m2, nulliparity rates, and previous cesarean delivery rates were similar among groups. Ethnicity was significantly different in the severe and moderate anemia groups (<0.001). Mean fetal weight was 2900 ± 80 g in the severe anemia group, 3050 ± 100 g in the moderate anemia group, 3350 ± 310 g in the mild anemia group, and 3400 ± 310 g in the control group. Fetal weight was significantly lower in the severe and moderate anemia groups compared to the mild anemia and control groups (<0.001). The SGA rate was 18.7% in the severe anemia group, 12.1% in the moderate anemia group, 5.3% in the mild anemia group, and 4.9% in the control group. SGA was significantly higher in the severe and moderate anemia groups compared to the mild anemia and control groups (<0.001). Conclusion. The results of this study indicated that early third trimester severe and moderate iron deficiency anemia was associated with SGA. Iron deficiency anemia in pregnant women may lead to low birth weight.

Abstract Lake Van fish (Alburnus tarichi Guldenstadt 1814) is the only fish that can adapt to the extreme conditions (pH 9.8 salinity 0.2% and alkalinity 151.2 meq/L) of Lake Van. In this study, it was aimed to determine the cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of chlorpyrifos (CPF) on Lake Van fish primary gill cell culture. Gill epithelium from Lake Van fish was isolated enzymatically and grown in primary culture on Leibovitz’s L-15 medium. After different doses (0.01, 0.1, 1, and 10 μM) of CPF were applied to the gill cells, the total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), malondialdehyde (MDA), and DNA damage levels (8-hydroxyguanine (8-OHdG)) were examined at the end of 24 and 48 h. It was determined that the TOS, MDA, and 8-OHdG levels increased in the cells exposed to high doses (1 and 10 μM) of CPF and the TAS was decreased (P < 0.05). It was revealed from this study that CPF administered at a dose higher than 1 μM can cause oxidative stress and DNA damage in the primary gill cell culture of Lake Van fish. In addition, the findings showed that Lake Van fish primary gill cell culture was useful in determining the effects of toxic substances likely to be the contaminants of a lake.

The nutritional status and health of the mother during pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, and during breastfeeding was very critical periods for children's growth and development. The aim of this research was to determine the relationship between anemia during pregnancy and the incidence of stunting. The method used in this research was observational correlational analytic, which looking for the relationship between two independent and dependent variables used a cohort-retrospective approach, with the independent variable anemia during pregnancy and the dependent variable the incidence of stunting. The research was conducted from 2 July – 29 August 2020 in Gayam Village, Kediri Distric used MCH book instrument. Total population was 512 toddlers with judgement sampling technique as many as 88 toddlers consisted of 38 stunting and 50 non-stunting toddlers. Analysis used the Spearman Rho with the results of the Spearman value showed that total of 66 toddlers, 4 (6.1%) of stunting toddlers were found with no history of anemia, 13 (19.7%) of stunting toddlers with a history of mild anemia and 5 (7.6%) of stunting toddlers with a history of moderate anemia. Spearman rho test results p value = 0.000. This mean that the p value <α = 0.05, because the p-value <α, H1 accepted, that there was a relationship between a history of anemia during pregnancy and the incidence of stunting on toddlers. Anemia during pregnancy was very risky for the development of fetus and the development of baby that will beb born can caused stunting.

AbstractObjectiveSubclinical hypothyroidism (SH) is one of the most prevalent endocrine disorders. Although recent data suggest an imbalanced oxidative status in SH, the mechanisms of increased oxidative stress are poorly figured out. The primary goal of this research was to analyze potential sources of ROS and the relationship between serum NOX-2 levels and paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) activity in SH. Serum lipid changes in SH patients which had been determined were compared to healthy control group.Materials and methodsThirty-one patients diagnosed with SH and 30 healthy controls were included in the study. The quantitative sandwich ELISA was used for the detection of serum NOX-2 levels. Spectrophotometric method was used to determine serum PON-1 activity.ResultsHigher median serum NOX-2 levels were determined in patients than in the control group (p = 0.004). Lower median serum PON-1 activity was determined in patients as to aforementioned control group (p < 0.0001). As a consequence, no statistically remarkable correlation was identified between PON-1 activity and NOX-2 levels. Triglyceride (TG) concentrations were determined as superior in patients to control group (p < 0.0001).ConclusionOver-production of NOX-2 and decreased PON-1 activity contribute to the increased oxidative stress in SH patients. Larger prospective studies required to confirm these findings.

Summary Background In this study, we aimed at determining the dynamic thiol/disulfide homeostasis and oxidant balance, and investigating the relation of these parameters to the severity of the disease and the serum calcium levels. Methods 55 patients with iatrogenic hypoparathyroidism follow-ups and 40 healthy volunteers were included in the study. The blood dynamic thiol/sulfide balance, Total Antioxidant Status (TAS), Total Oxidant Status (TOS), Paraoxonase Enzyme Activity (PON) levels were measured in serum samples. Results In our study, it was found that the disulfide, disulfide/native thiol, disulfide/total thiol levels were higher in the hypoparathyroidism group. A negative correlation was found between 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25-OH vitamin D) and disulfide, disulfide/native thiol and disulfide/total thiol, and a positive correlation was found between native thiol and total thiol ratio; and the corrected calcium levels and PON levels were negatively correlated. Conclusions Consequently, a change in favour of disulfide was found in the dynamic thiol-disulfide homeostasis in the hypoparathyroidism group in our study.

Objective: To compare paraoxonase activity and changes in oxidative status in asthmatic children and healthy children by determining serum paraoxonase activity and total oxidative status, total antioxidant capacity and lipid hydroperoxidation. Methods: Forty two asthmatic children were compared with 32 healthy children of similar age and sex. To evaluate the paraoxonase and oxidative status, total antioxidant capacity and lipid hydroperoxidation were examined. Serum paraoxonase activity was evaluated by measuring the rate of paraoxon hydrolosis. Oxidative status was evaluated by the method developed by Erel. Lipid hydroperoxide was measured by an iodometric method. Results: In comparison with the healthy control group, the paraoxonase activity of the asthmatic children was found to be low (163.7 ± 73.0 (U/L) and 349.2 ± 153.9 (U/L), P = 0.002) and total oxidant status (9.0 ± 3.5 ?mol H2O2 Eq/L and 13.4 ± 7.0 ?mol H2O2 Eq/L, P =0.002), total antioxidant capacity (5.5 ± 2.5 µmol Trolox Eq/L and 1.0 ± 0.6 µmol Trolox Eq/L, P < 0.001), and lipid hydroperoxidation values (9.9 ± 3.4 ?mol H2O2 Eq/L and 4.4 ± 1.5 ?mol H2O2 Eq/L, P < 0.001) were found to be high. The high density lipoprotein (HDL) concentration of the asthmatic children was lower than that in the control group (40.1 ± 9.2 mg/dl and 54.5 ± 15.9 mg/dl, P < 0.001) Conclusion: In asthmatic children, when total oxidant status, total antioxidant capacity and lipid hydroperoxidation levels increase, paraoxonase activity decreased.

Cognitive dysfunction is a common disease in aging population. This study aims to compare the influence of different degrees of anemia on the cognitive function of patients undergo hysteromyoma surgery. Sixty-one patients aged 18–60 years who underwent uterine fibroid surgery in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College from March 2019 to December 2020 were selected for this study. Patients were divided into three groups: group normal (Group N, patients have no anemia), group of mild anemia (Group Mi, patients have mild anemia) and group of moderate anemia (Group Mo, patients had moderate anemia). Combined spinal and epidural anesthesia were administered. Cognitive function tests were performed 1 day before the surgery and repeated at the 5th and 30th days after surgery. Peripheral venous blood samples from patients were collected before the surgery, right after surgery and at the 24th and 72nd hours after surgery. The contents of S-100β, IL-6, TNF-α and IL-1β in serum samples were determined by ELISA. It was found that there were no significant differences in general characteristics of patients among Group N, Group Mi and Group Mo (p > 0.05). Nine patients developed postoperative cognitive dysfunction after surgery, and the incidence was 14.75% (9/61). The incidence of postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) was 40% in Group Mo, which was higher than that in Group N and Group Mi. The difference was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Inflammatory factors in patients with POCD were higher in post-surgery than before-surgery (p < 0.05), while there was no statistical significance in the difference of inflammatory factors of patients without POCD before and after surgery (p > 0.05). Taken together, this study suggested that moderate anemia could be a risk factor of POCD in patients undergoing hysteromyoma surgeries. This study will help surgeons developing measures for preventing the occurrence of POCD.
