Selected area electron diffraction (SAD) has been used successfully to determine crystal structures, identify traces of minerals in rocks, and characterize the phases formed during thermal treatment of micron-sized particles. There is an increased interest in the method because it has the potential capability of identifying micron-sized pollutants in air and water samples. This paper is a short review of the theory behind SAD and a discussion of the sample preparation employed for the analysis of multiple component environmental samples.

Abstract The Popeye domain-containing gene family encodes a novel class of cAMP effector proteins in striated muscle tissue. In this short review, we first introduce the protein family and discuss their structure and function with an emphasis on their role in cyclic AMP signalling. Another focus of this review is the recently discovered role of POPDC genes as striated muscle disease genes, which have been associated with cardiac arrhythmia and muscular dystrophy. The pathological phenotypes observed in patients will be compared with phenotypes present in null and knockin mutations in zebrafish and mouse. A number of protein–protein interaction partners have been discovered and the potential role of POPDC proteins to control the subcellular localization and function of these interacting proteins will be discussed. Finally, we outline several areas, where research is urgently needed.

The advancement in 3D printing has led to the rapid growth of 4D printing technology. Adding time, as the fourth dimension, this technology ushered the potential of a massive evolution in fields of biomedical technologies, space applications, deployable structures, manufacturing industries, and so forth. This technology performs ingenious design, using smart materials to create advanced forms of the 3-D printed specimen. Improvements in Computer-aided design, additive manufacturing process, and material science engineering have ultimately favored the growth of 4-D printing innovation and revealed an effective method to gather complex 3-D structures. Contrast to all these developments, novel material is still a challenging sector. However, this short review illustrates the basic of 4D printing, summarizes the stimuli responsive materials properties, which have prominent role in the field of 4D technology. In addition, the practical applications are depicted and the potential prospect of this technology is put forward.

Among the compounds able to efficiently inhibit the amyloid aggregation of proteins and decompose the amyloid aggregates that cause neurodegenerative diseases, of particular interest are dendrimers, which represent individual macromolecules with the hypercrosslinked architectures and given molecular parameters. This short review outlines the peculiarities of the antiamyloid activity of dendrimers and discusses the effect of dendrimer structures and external factors on their antiamyloid properties. The potential of application of dendrimers in further investigations on the aggregation processes of amyloid proteins as the compounds that exhibit the remarkable antiamyloid activity is evaluated.

Hyperinsulinemic Hypoglycemia

A nem insulinoma eredetű tartós (perzisztáló) hyperinsulinaemiával járó hypoglykaemia oka a felnőttek körében ritkán előforduló nesidioblastosis. A nesidioblastosis hátterében álló inzulinszekréciós zavar molekuláris eltéréseken alapul. Morfológiailag különböző pancreassziget-, illetve béta-sejt-eltérések jellemzik, az inzulinhiperszekréció hátterében azonban körülhatárolható térfoglalás nem mutatható ki. A diagnózis alappillére az alacsony vércukorszint, a normoglykaemia intravénásan alkalmazott glükóz adásával történő fenntarthatósága, illetve az emelkedett inzulin- és C-peptid-szint. A hormontermelő tumor kizárásához mind invazív, mind nem invazív képalkotó módszerek szükségesek. A tartós, illetve ismétlődő hypoglykaemia káros hatásai gyógyszeres és/vagy sebészi kezeléssel előzhetők meg. Esetismertetés: A szerzők két betegük esetét ismertetik, akiknél felnőttkorban jelentkeztek a súlyos tünetekkel járó hypoglykaemiás epizódok. Nőbetegük „klasszikus” hypoglykaemiás tünetei 34 éves korban léptek fel: izzadás, szédülés, remegés, idegesség, illetve életveszélyes neuroglycopeniás jelek. Második, férfi betegük 22 éves, akinek fő panasza a hypoglykaemia ritka és szokatlan tünete, a nagyfokú éhségérzet mellett jelentkező puffadás volt. Az éhezési próbák mindkét esetben pozitívak voltak, vagyis hypoglykaemiás tünetek miatt fel kellett azokat függeszteni. Az inzulin- és a C-peptid-szintek magasak voltak, vénás inzulinszint-meghatározás az a. lienalis több pontjából és a képalkotó eljárások (komputertomográfia, mágneses rezonancia, pozitronemissziós tomográfia, angiográfia) nem tudtak igazolni térfoglalást. Az adatok alapján – szövettan hiányában is – a legvalószínűbb a felnőttkori nesidioblastosis diagnózisa. Diazoxid adásával mindkét esetben majdnem teljes tünetmentességet értek el, és neuroglycopeniás esemény a kezelés kezdete óta nem fordult elő. Következtetések: Ismeretlen eredetű hypoglykaemia esetén, ha a képalkotó eljárásokkal nincs körülírt képlet, a laboratóriumi adatok viszont egyértelműen emelkedett inzulinszekrécióra utalnak, gondolni kell nesidioblastosis lehetőségére. A sebészi beavatkozás veszélye pancreaselégtelenség éppúgy lehet, mint a betegség fennmaradása a hasnyálmirigy reszekciója miatt. Diazoxid adásával viszont tartós tünetmentesség érhető el ezen ritka kórképben, ezért érdemes elsőként ezt megkísérelni.

Abstract The stroma of the neoplasm is a highly complex structure built by: specialized mesenchymal cells typical for each tissue surroundings, cancer associated fibroblast/myofibroblast, congenital or acquired immune cells, vascular network with endothelial cells and pericytes, mastocytes, macrophages, leukocytes and adipocytes, all together incorporated in the extracellular matrix. Each neoplasm produces its own unique microenvironment where the tumor grows and modifies. Although most of the cells of the host in the stroma have compulsory tumor suppressor ability, the stroma is changing during the malignant process and it even promotes growth, invasion and metastasis. Genetic changes that occur during the development of the cancer, which are guided by the malignant cells lead to changes in the stroma of the host that will overtake it and adjust it to their own needs. In the early stages of the tumor development and invasion, the basal membrane is degraded and the stroma becomes active and contains an increased number of fibroblasts, inflammatory infiltrate and newly composed capillaries which come into direct contact with the tumor cells. These changes lead to cancer invasion.
