In view of the future plans to measure the Lamb shift in muonic Lithium atoms we address the microscopic theory of the \mu\,μ-^66Li^{2+}2+ and \mu\,μ-^77Li^{2+}2+ systems. The goal of the CREMA collaboration is to measure the Lamb shift to extract the charge radius with high precision and compare it to electron scattering data or atomic spectroscopy to see if interesting puzzles, such as the proton and deuteron radius puzzles, arise. For this experiment to be successful, theoretical information on the nuclear structure corrections to the Lamb shift is needed. For \muμ-^66Li^{2+}2+ and \mu\,μ-^77Li^{2+}2+ there exist only estimates of nuclear structure corrections based on experimental data that suffer from very large uncertainties. We present the first steps towards an ab initio computation of these quantities using few-body techniques.

We have applied the full-relativistic Dirac B-Spline R-matrix method to obtain cross sections for electron scattering from ytterbium atoms. The results are compared with those obtained from a semi-relativistic (Breit-Pauli) model-potential approach and the few available experimental data.

A recently proposed semiphenomenological density distribution for neutrons and protons in nuclei is discussed. This density was derived using the separation energies of the last neutron or proton. A comparison is made with the symmetrised Fermi density distribution with parameters determined by fitting electron scattering experimental data and with a Fermi density with parameters coming from a recent analysis of pionic atoms. Theoretical expressions for rms radii for neutron, proton and matter distributions are proposed, which give the average trend of the variation of these quantities as functions of Ν, Ζ and A respectively. To facilitate the use of the new density all the parameters needed in a practical application are tabulated for a series of nuclei. Some applications of the new density are also discussed.

The sigma(ξ)meson exchange contribution to the potential of the muon-proton interactionin muonichydrogen inducedbythe ξ-meson coupling to two photons is estimated. The transition form factor ξ → γγ is deduced from the quark model and experimental data on the decay widths Γσγγ. It is shown that scalar meson exchange contribution to the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen, △ELs(2P−2S ),is rather large and relevant for a comparison with coming precise experimental data.

Vacuum polarization, nuclear structure and recoil, radiative corrections to the hyperfine structure of S-states in muonic ions of lithium, beryllium and boron are calculated on the basis of quasipotential method in quantum electrodynamics. We consider contributions in first and second orders of perturbation theory which have the order α5 and α6 in the energy spectrum. Total values of hyperfine splittings are obtained which can be used for a comparison with future experimental data.

The relationship between the static electric form factor for the proton in the rest frame and the Sachs electric form factor in the Breit momentum frame is used to provide a value for the difference in the mean squared charge radius of the proton evaluated in the two frames. Associating the muonic–hydrogen data analysis for the proton charge radius of 0.84087 fm with the rest frame and associating the electron scattering data with the Breit frame yields a prediction of 0.87944 fm for the proton radius in the relativistic frame. The most recent value deduced via electron scattering from the proton is 0.877(6) fm so that the frame dependence used here yields a plausible solution to the proton radius puzzle.
