Abstract Information-Integration is vital for keeping manufacturing operations competitive. A case study approach has been adopted to better understand the role of information in integrated manufacturing. Information is now considered a corporate asset. Creation, processing, movement, and security of information is therefore as important as that of the products/services of an enterprise. The case studies have helped in identifying the issues involved in developing an information system and supporting software framework for a manufacturing enterprise. The case studies have helped in refining an integration model, and identifying the characteristics desirable in modeling methodologies and tools. This paper describes a case study dealing with integrated manufacture of optical fiber products. A phased development and implementation approach was adopted where a small, manageable slice of the system is considered for the case study followed by functional modeling (IDEF0) and data flow modeling (Data Flow Diagrams). This identifies the pieces of information of interest. The information relationships are modeled using Extended Entity Relationship (EER) diagrams which are then mapped on to a relational model. The relational tables thus obtained were implemented on a commercial Database Management System. The functional constraints and application interfaces were then built using SQL and commercial application interface tools. The sections in the paper describe the functional models, data flow diagrams, EER diagrams, relational database design, and user/application interfaces developed for the system. Implementation experiences and observations are discussed followed by plans for the next phase of the system.

In this brief case study, we describe an approach to structuring and summarizing information from one of the largest untapped sources of data in healthcare delivery -- spoken conversations. Abridge’s mission is to shift agency to the people and families at the center of those spoken conversations, using bleeding-edge machine learning and human-centered design. The space of conversation understanding is largely untapped and we will discuss our scientific approaches to business challenges that map to the company’s mission of helping everyone better understand and follow through on their healthcare conversations.

This chapter presents an approach to the role of software engineering in developing solutions for new mobile technologies, like tablets. It discusses the importance of the new standards brought by emerging technologies such as engineering and how software must adapt to this new reality in order to identify the needs of data, information, integration, shares, and other issues that will contribute to the life cycle of these solutions. The chapter also discusses the contribution of users in the development process and improve these solutions. The research method is the case study conducted in industrial companies that use a digital catalog solution and sales force automation for tablets. This chapter presents a new approach based on commercial tablets which is supported by a platform of software and services called commercially Nimiam (www.nimiam.com.br).

We propose an evaluation way by Information Integration Method(IIM)[1] for improvement designs. IIM is an evaluation way which is based on Shannon’s information theory and is not depending on personal subjectivity. We have confirmed the effectiveness of this evaluation way by confirming a case study of an electric shaver improvement design.

Purpose The purpose of this case study is to investigate how a small catering company has coped with the current Covid-19 pandemic. Initial research was performed in 2014 and repeated in 2018. Given the far reaching business challenges of the pandemic, the authors examined the viability of the organization within the current climate. Design/methodology/approach Embedded organizational components of culture, leadership and engagement are explored as key elements in the sustainability of the company during the pandemic crisis. Prior research data using the organizational culture inventory is used to assess organizational culture over a four-year period. Employee data and interview analysis within company structure is used to determine how leadership and employee engagement is impacted. Culture research is examined to determine the influence of company culture upon organizational survival. Findings This paper identifies workplace culture elements that contribute to company sustainability. Embedded core value systems, strong employee engagement mechanisms and focused leadership styles were observed to be critical influences upon company survival during the pandemic. Originality/value This research would assist industry professionals and practitioners in understanding the active workplace culture mechanisms found to be effective for organizational survival during periods of crisis. Companies that adopt similar practices may acquire sustainability advantage during the pandemic.

This study proposes an innovative technology of Virtual COM Port Driver applied to the SaaS cloud manufacturing system, so that user can only via a web browser to complete all operations of system. Flexibility of the system extensions, and support manufacturing enterprise use other communications equipment at work, for example RFID products, GPS receiver. Information integration, solve each computer to be fitted Middleware to read native components and retrieve information for the inconvenience. This study proposes five-layer model of cloud manufacturing system, and through the virtualization web server to achieve cloud infrastructure layer. In particular, the Virtual Com Port Driver is deployed in the cloud infrastructure layer and middleware layer, and the signal device layer can communicate directly to the cloud infrastructure layer via the web browser. Through a case study, to implement the Virtual COM Port Driver technology to verify the cloud server can capture the local COM port successfully only via the web browser and integrate the information further.

The interoperation of various applications will need a representation that goes beyond the traditional geometry-based one, which is inadequate for capturing semantic information. The semantic file is proposed to support a tighter integration of CAD and FEA. The main idea of the approach is presented and key technologies are elaborated, including the creation of the FEA solution template, and the matching algorithm between semantic markup file and FEA template file t. Finally, the feasibility and effectiveness of the approach is empirically validated by a case study.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide useful insights on “bring your own device” (BYOD) and IT consumerization, to help organizations understand how to address their consequences. For young, tech-savvy workers, using their own devices at work represents a right, rather than a privilege, leading them to initiate a growing, yet under-researched, drive toward IT consumerization. Some companies already deploy BYOD programs, allowing employees to use personal devices for work-related activities, but other managers remain hesitant of the implications of such programs. Design/methodology/approach – To provide an overview of this growing phenomenon, this paper presents an in-depth analysis of existing literature and identifies organizational changes induced by this reversed adoption logic. A case study of Volvo reveals how one organization has coped successfully with this phenomenon. Findings – These analyses shed more light on the stakes involved in BYOD and IT consumerization, as well as the changes they imply for organizations and IT departments. Practical implications – Both BYOD and IT consumerization have deep and broad consequences for organizations, some of which are very positive, as long as the trends are well-managed and carefully addressed. Originality/value – This paper covers a topic that has attracted scant attention in prior academic research, despite widely acknowledged concerns about security and reliability in practitioner studies. By going beyond a classic discourse focused solely on the security threats of BYOD, this paper investigates both business challenges and implications associated with a reversed adoption logic.

The case study showcases ‘morethailand.com’ an e-intermediary in the tourism industry. Based out of Thailand, the firm is in the process of finding a niche for itself through innovative online and offline marketing strategies with the constraint of limited resources. The case study attempts to focus on the e-business challenges in the travel and tourism sector especially in a developing country like Thailand. It specifically highlights the clash between the traditional and modern form of intermediaries in the travel and tourism sector and how it is bound to evolve in the future. A comparison between different approaches to search engine marketing offers an interesting perspective to the literature pertaining to on line e-commerce. An economic view on the case is also presented.
