AbstractThis paper investigates the role of extra-regional capabilities in regional economic development in a Central and Eastern European context. This is done by analysing the association between the related variety of manufacturing import and export of domestic- and foreign-owned firms on the one hand, and regional employment in manufacturing export on the other. By means of a panel regression framework applied to the Hungarian microregions between 2000 and 2011, we find that domestic firms, in particular, benefit from the related variety of export activities in the regions, while import related to existing export activities is beneficial amongst both foreign and domestic firms. Furthermore, bridging the technological gap between foreign companies and the host economy requires stronger technological relatedness, unless domestic firms have experience in importing.

AbstractDrawing on an ethnography in regional employment offices in a French-German canton in Switzerland, it is the aim of this article to articulate the complexities involved in the practices revolving around and geared towards the role of language competences in the process of professional reintegration, particularly so with regards to migrants who speak a different language. The socio-economic inequality of the Russian regions poses a significant threat both to the successful social and technological development of the country. Since employment is one of the crucial highlighters of such inequality, the paper is devoted to assessing regional inequality in terms of employment quality in the context of technological changes. The article presents a system of social and economic indicators to determine the place of each region in the interregional employment inequality. The novelty of the study includes the methodological approaches and methods to estimate regional employment inequality and its components. The authors reveal the employment quality and its main components keeping relatable with the technological development. Based on these points, we developed employment quality coefficient and carried out a typology of Russian regions in terms of the employment quality. The study uses data from the Rosstat on working conditions and economic activity of the population for 2005-2019. The results expand the scientific ideas about the interdependence of employment and technological development. In addition, the research results should be considered when developing the state technical policy, differentiating the employment policy and socio-economic development of the regions.

Studies of residential segregation's role in creating employment inequality between blacks and whites have focused on the characteristics of neighborhoods (e.g., mean SES or distance from job centers). in contrast, this study considers the broader structure of metropolitan segregation in which neighborhoods are situated and its impact on the racial disparity in access to employment opportunities. the study employs multilevel analyses and the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth to test the effects of metropolitan segregation in 1980 on respondents’ probability of being employed by 1990 net of individual and family level characteristics, and to assess the role of segregation in explaining the race gap in employment between blacks and whites. the analyses reveal that residential segregation decreases employment odds for blacks, but not for whites, and explains the residual race gap in the probability of being employed. in addition, the depressive effect of segregation on employment is weaker for black women than it is for black men.
