Strong Spin-Orbital Coupling and Robust Surface States in SrirO 3 Films: Confirmation by Increasing Lattice Disorder

Thermal reactions of cobalt(II) salts with flexible N,N′-bis(pyrid-3-ylmethyl)adipoamide (L) and angular 4,4′-sulfonyldibenzoic acid (H2SDA) in H2O and CH3OH afforded a pair of supramolecular isomers: [Co2(L)(SDA)2], 1, and [Co2(L)(SDA)2]⋅CH3OH⋅H2O, 2. The structure of complex 1 can be simplified as a one-dimensional (1D) looped chain with L ligands penetrating into the middles of squares, forming a new type of self-catenated net with the (42⋅54)(4)2(5)2 topology, whereas complex 2 displays a 2-fold interpenetrated 2D net with the rare (42⋅68⋅8⋅104)(4)2-2,6L1 topology. While both complexes 1 and 2 display antiferromagnetism with strong spin-orbital coupling, the antiferromagnetism of 2 is accompanied by a cross-over behavior and probably a spin canting phenomenon.

The bismuth rhodate BiRhO 3, which crystallizes in a perovskite structure, was synthesized under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions, using a 6–8 double stage multi-anvil apparatus. The synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data suggest that the crystal structure of the BiRhO 3 perovskite is stable under pressures up to 34 GPa at room temperature with anisotropic compressibility. The equation of state for BiRhO 3 compound was obtained. The results offer opportunities for further research into the BiRhO 3 quantum compound with strong spin orbital coupling.

ABSTRACTIn this work, we report the results of studies of the transverse magnetoresistance (MR) of single-crystal Bi nanowires with diameter d<80 nm. The single-crystal nanowire samples were prepared by the Taylor-Ulitovsky technique. Due to the semimetal-to-semiconductor transformation and high density of surface states with strong spin-orbit interactions, the charge carriers are confined to the conducting tube made of surface states. The non monotonic changes of transverse MR that are equidistant in a direct magnetic field were observed at low temperatures in a wide range of magnetic fields up to 14 T. The period of oscillations depends on the wire diameter d as for the case of longitudinal MR. An interpretation of transverse MR oscillations is presented.
